A fade is the gradual blend from shorter hair at the sides and back to longer hair above. The best version for you depends on four choices: how high the blend starts, how short it goes, what shape it follows, and what you want on top. The 40 looks below combine those choices; they are an editorial selection, not a popularity ranking.
How to choose a fade
Decide on the fade’s height, base finish, shape and top style separately. These terms describe different parts of the cut, so a “low skin fade” and a “mid number-one fade” are both specific, coherent requests. The fade is only the sides and back; the hair on top completes the hairstyle.

| Choice | What it means | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Low, mid or high placement | Low keeps the blend near the ears and neckline; mid places it around the temples or middle of the sides; high moves it up the sides for stronger contrast. |
| Base finish | Skin, zero or a clipper guard | Skin or bald goes down to bare-looking skin. Zero can leave fine stubble; a guard such as 0.5 or 1 leaves more hair and a softer finish. |
| Shape | Straight/standard, drop or burst | A drop curves lower behind the ear. A burst makes a semicircle around the ear and leaves more length behind it. |
| Top | The length and style left above the blend | Options include crops, curls, quiffs, side parts, buzz cuts and longer styles. |
Barbers quoted by GQ describe placement as the key difference between fade heights: Aaron Chan says, “The higher you move the fade, the more contrast you create.” A lower blend tends to preserve more weight on the sides, while a high one makes the top stand apart more clearly.

Each look pairs a fade choice with a top style. Bring a reference photo that shows the side and back as well as the front; the exact result depends on your hair, head shape and barber’s interpretation.

Low fades
- Low skin fade with textured crop: Bare-looking skin at the lowest edge transitions into a short, choppy crop. A subtle placement keeps the crop as the focus.
- Low fade with a side part: Keep the blend near the ears and neckline, with a defined part and enough length above to comb across.
- Low taper fade with a crew cut: A restrained graduation along the sides and neck preserves the crew cut’s overall silhouette.
- Low fade with curls: Leave curl length and volume above the blend; the low transition reduces the amount of visible contrast.
- Low fade with a quiff: Pair a quiet lower blend with a raised, forward-styled front for contrast between the top and sides.
- Low drop fade with a crop: Let the blend curve downward behind the ear, then keep the top cropped and textured.
- Low fade with slick back: Keep more side weight low and comb the longer top back. Specify whether you want a soft or sharply defined finish.
- Low fade with fringe: A short or textured fringe sits over a subtle blend at the temples and around the ears.
- Low burst fade with curls: The semicircular transition frames the ear while leaving length behind it; curls add texture above.
- Low fade with a buzz cut: A short, even top meets a close blend that stays low for a less dramatic outline.
Mid fades
- Mid skin fade with a textured crop: A bare-looking base rises to the middle of the sides, setting off a short textured top.
- Mid fade with a crew cut: A balanced transition around the temples pairs neatly with a compact, low-maintenance top.
- Mid fade with a quiff: The blend gives the sides definition while the longer front is styled upward and back.
- Mid fade with a pompadour: Leave enough top length to build height and sweep it back over more closely cut sides.
- Mid fade with curls: Keep the curls prominent above a mid-level transition; discuss how much bulk to retain at the temples.
- Mid drop fade with a side part: The curved back edge adds shape, while a part gives the top a clear direction.
- Mid fade with slick back: A defined blend sits beneath a longer top combed back, with the finish adjusted to your preferred sharpness.
- Mid fade with a textured fringe: Leave movement at the front and blend the sides around the middle of the head.
- Mid burst fade with a mohawk: A semicircle around each ear leaves a strip of length through the center and back.
- Mid fade with a line-up: Add crisp edging at the forehead and temples to a mid-level blend; ask how sharp you want the outline.
High fades
- High skin fade with a crop: The close base and high transition create pronounced contrast beneath a short, textured top.
- High fade with a crew cut: A compact top meets a blend that begins higher on the sides, giving the cut a sharper profile.
- High fade with a quiff: The elevated blend emphasizes height at the front; keep enough length there to style upward.
- High fade with a pompadour: A longer, swept-back top stands out strongly above the short sides.
- High fade with a buzz cut: Combine a very short top with a high transition for a clean, high-contrast shape.
- High fade with a side part: The close sides make the part and longer top more prominent.
- High fade with curls: Leave curl length on top while the high blend creates a strong break between the top and sides.
- High fade with a slick back: Style the longer hair back above a high transition for a distinctly separated silhouette.
- High drop fade with a crop: The fade starts high at the sides but drops behind the ear, combining contrast with a curved back outline.
- High fade with a fringe: Let the fringe carry the length and texture while the sides are blended high.
Shaped and detail-focused fades
- Drop fade with a textured top: The blend follows the head and dips behind the ear; keep the top in a natural, piecey texture.
- Drop fade with curls: A curved transition complements curls left longer above and behind the ear.
- Burst fade with a mohawk: The rounded fade around the ears leaves a central strip of hair running toward the back.
- Burst fade with a mullet: Keep length at the back and use the semicircular blend to define the area around the ears.
- Temple fade with longer curls: Keep the transition localized to the temples while retaining length across the sides and top.
- Taper fade with a side part: A subtle graduation at the sidelines and neck keeps more of the haircut’s original outline.
- Taper fade with a crew cut: A neat, restrained blend complements the short, even top without making the sides the main feature.
- Shadow fade with a textured top: Ask for a softer-looking transition rather than assuming “shadow fade” has one standardized technical definition.
- Skin fade with a beard blend: Continue the transition into the beard for a connected finish; agree on where the beard should remain full.
- Zero fade with a line-up: A very close base that can leave fine stubble pairs with a crisp outline. Specify zero rather than skin if you want that distinction.
How to ask your barber for the cut
Give the barber the four choices, then use a photo to clarify the silhouette. Barber.Style offers this example wording: “I’d like a low fade, starting with a number 0.5 rather than skin. Keep some weight around the upper sides, blend it into the top, and leave about 5 cm on top with a textured finish.” That is an example request, not a universal measurement prescription.
- Name the height: Say low, mid or high, and point out where you want the blend to begin.
- Set the shortest point: Request skin, zero, or a guard number. If you are unsure, ask the barber to explain the difference before cutting.
- Describe the shape: Specify straight/standard, drop or burst, especially if the back or area around the ears matters to you.
- Explain the top: Say how much length to keep and whether you want a crop, curls, fringe, quiff or another finish.
- Show reference views: Use front, side and back images, and mention what you like in each. Discuss how the cut will look as it grows out.
Choosing a fade for your hair and upkeep
Texture, density, head and face shape, desired contrast, work or style context, and how often you want a refresh all affect the choice. These are considerations rather than rules: a barber can adjust the blend and top to suit your hair and the silhouette you want.

A skin finish needs more frequent refreshing to stay crisp than a less aggressive base. Barber.Style’s approximate guidance is that skin fades may need an edge-to-edge refresh every two to three weeks, while mid and high skin fades can look softer after one to two weeks. These are not universal intervals; hair growth, the exact cut and your preferred level of sharpness change the timing. Lower fades starting at a 0.5 or 1 are described as more forgiving as they grow.

Choose styling products for the top, not for the fade itself. A matte clay can support a textured crop; pomade suits slicked-back styles; paste or styling cream can give a more natural finish; sea salt spray can add volume; and curl cream is an option for curls. These are general styling suggestions, not guarantees of a particular result. If blow-drying, Haircut Inspiration recommends using heat protectant.
