These five facts explain what the names and features mean, and distinguish Rolex’s published history and specifications from independent testing.
1. What does “Oyster Perpetual” mean?
Rolex dates the original Oyster Perpetual to 1931 and describes it as the brand’s first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch. In Rolex’s terminology, “Oyster” refers to the water-resistant case, while “Perpetual” describes the rotor that winds the movement as the wearer moves. The two words point to separate design ideas: protection from water and automatic winding. Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual history and Rolex’s explanation of its terminology provide the company’s account.
2. Did a Rolex Explorer reach the top of Everest?
Not by the name Rolex gives the watches involved. Rolex says Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached Everest’s summit on 29 May 1953, and that the expedition was equipped with Oyster Perpetual chronometers. The company launched the Explorer later that year; it does not identify the expedition watches as Explorer models. Rolex highlights the Explorer’s black dial and 3, 6 and 9 numerals as features intended to make the dial easy to read. Rolex’s Explorer history gives its version of the connection.
3. When did the Rolex Submariner come out, and how did its depth rating change?
Rolex says it introduced the Submariner in 1953 with waterproofness guaranteed to 100 metres (330 feet). According to the company’s chronology, the rating rose to 300 metres (1,000 feet) in 1989. These are Rolex’s historical product specifications, not a statement that every Submariner reference has the same rating. Rolex’s Submariner history describes the model’s development.

4. What is the GMT-Master II for?
The GMT-Master family was designed to help people crossing the globe track time zones. Rolex dates the GMT-Master to 1955 and the GMT-Master II to 1982. The GMT-Master II introduced a movement that lets its hour hand move independently, so the wearer can adjust local time while retaining the 24-hour hand’s reference. Together with the graduated bezel, the hands allow the watch to show two time zones. That practical adjustment is what distinguishes the GMT-Master II’s approach to dual-time display. See Rolex’s GMT-Master II history and description.
5. What does “Superlative Chronometer” certify?
Rolex says a movement first receives certification from the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). Rolex then tests the assembled, cased watch in its own laboratories. The company’s current certification description sets the finished watch’s precision tolerance at −2/+2 seconds per day. This is Rolex’s published specification and testing claim, not an independent assessment of the process or a guarantee of the performance of every pre-owned watch.
