How a telemeter scale works
A telemeter scale pairs a chronograph’s elapsed-time measurement with the delay between seeing and hearing an event. For a storm, start the chronograph at the lightning flash and stop it when thunder arrives. The scale translates that interval into an estimated distance, provided its calibration matches the units you want to read.
In the 2021 roundup, Nezumi and Junghans are described as suited to metric readings, while the RGM 455-R is highlighted for a mile-friendly scale. That reflects the author’s assessment at the time, not a survey of the current watch market. A telemeter is an estimating aid, not a replacement for weather alerts or safety guidance.
What makes a telemeter chronograph readable?
The roundup’s main selection criterion was legibility. The key is whether the scale can be read quickly without competing with other dial markings. Baines considered scale contrast and segmentation, whether the chronograph seconds hand reaches the scale, and whether other tracks crowd it. Those details matter more in practical use than simply having the word “telemeter” on the dial.

1. Nezumi Tonnerre Chronograph, blue dial
The entry in the roundup puts contrast first: navy and off-white make the dial markings distinct, and the chronograph seconds hand reaches into the telemeter scale. Its 38 mm case, 45 mm lug-to-lug span and 12 mm thickness including sapphire crystal make it the smallest stated diameter among these five. The article reported a Seiko VK63 mecha-quartz movement and a €310 retail price in August 2021.

2. Junghans Meister Telemeter, black dial
The black-dial version uses red markers to pick out its gray and silver scale. The author particularly liked that the chronograph seconds hand extends beyond the telemeter, while noting that the telemeter sits within the tachymeter. The article-era description gives a 40.8 mm width, 45 mm lug-to-lug, 12.6 mm thickness, 21 mm lug spacing, acrylic crystal, 30 m water resistance and a modular ETA 2892-based chronograph movement. Its stated bracelet price was €2,090 in 2021.
3. RGM 455-R Classic Chronograph
The RGM stood out in the roundup for readers seeking a scale calibrated for miles, as well as for its separated dial sectors and blued chronograph hand. The article reports a Valjoux 7750. RGM’s official Model 455 page confirms the 455-R telemeter variant and lists a stainless-steel case measuring 38.2 by 13.9 mm, sapphire crystal, 20 mm lug width, 5 ATM water resistance and a $3,950 price. The page lists 7750 or 7753 calibers for the Model 455 family, rather than assigning one caliber to every variant. RGM describes the collection as inspired by “the great classic chronographs from the 1940s with their technical and functional dials.”

4. TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 18 Telemeter
The Carrera’s plain black-on-silver telemeter was considered readable despite its restrained design. Moving the minute track to the perimeter leaves the scale less crowded. How to choose among them
- Match the calibration to your units. The roundup identifies metric use for the Nezumi and Junghans and a mile-friendly scale for the RGM. Confirm the scale’s calibration on the exact watch before buying.
- Look at the scale in context. Compare contrast, spacing and hand reach; also check whether a tachymeter or minute track competes for attention.
- Check fit, not diameter alone. The article gives lug-to-lug measurements for the Nezumi, Junghans and TAG Heuer, which can help alongside case width and thickness when judging wrist fit. It does not provide equivalent lug-to-lug data for all five.
- Weigh the construction and movement details. The listed movements range from the Nezumi’s mecha-quartz to mechanical chronograph configurations; crystal material and water resistance also vary where stated.
- Verify present-day price and availability. The Fratello roundup dates from August 11, 2021. Its prices and availability statements describe that point in time. RGM’s current Model 455 page publishes specifications and a price, but a listing does not establish that a particular variant is in stock. For other models, check a current authorized seller or reputable pre-owned dealer.
Price and availability are time-sensitive
The figures in the roundup are not comparable current quotations: they include euros and dollars, retail pricing and the price of a single example, and different configurations. No present-day stock status is established here for the Nezumi, Junghans, TAG Heuer or Montblanc references.
