A gradient dial changes tone across its surface; a fumé dial usually fades from a lighter center to darker edges. The terms overlap, but they do not guarantee the same appearance or construction. These six watches show how the effect can suit an integrated-bracelet sports watch, an enamel dress watch, a tool-inspired design or a chronograph. The shortlist was published on July 16, 2025, so treat its prices and configurations as dated snapshots and verify the exact reference with the maker before buying.
What makes a dial gradient or fumé?
“Gradient” is a broad visual description: the color changes across the dial. “Fumé” commonly refers to a smoky fade that is brighter near the center and deepens toward the perimeter. Hager’s definition describes the color becoming more intense toward the edges, with the effect changing in different light (Hager Watches). Bangalore Watch Company similarly describes its Apogee dials as brighter in the center and darker at the edges (Bangalore Watch Company).
The appearance does not identify how a dial was made. Depending on the watch, the effect may come from a textured enamel surface, a sprayed lacquer treatment, or a transparent dial that reveals the movement. For example, Titan says its Edge Fumage dial is hand-sprayed in progressively darker layers toward the edges and sealed with a clear coat (Titan). Mido’s archived Commander Gradient announcement describes a smoky transparent dial through which the movement is visible (Mido). Look at the specific maker’s description rather than assuming every gradient dial is technically fumé or made the same way.
Six watches to consider
The watches below are a style-led shortlist, not a ranking. The published guide supplies dated prices for five candidates, but not the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris. Those amounts are the guide’s July 16, 2025 listings, not confirmed current prices or offers; confirm availability, reference and price with the brand or an authorized retailer.

|---|---|---|
| Christopher Ward The Twelve 40 Titanium | Astral Blue and Nebula Purple gradient dials fade to charcoal at the edge, over a pyramid-patterned dial. The color adds contrast to the integrated-bracelet sports-watch design. | The guide listed US$1,895 and described the variant as exclusive to Time+Tide Discovery Studios. Both the sales channel and price are time-sensitive; confirm the exact titanium reference and current availability. |
| Rado Anatom Automatic | Graduated fumé colors include blue, brown and green; the guide also names grapefruit red, lemon yellow and lime green Summer Collection colors. A dark ceramic case and convex sapphire crystal visually continue the darker perimeter. | The guide listed US$3,550. Verify which colors remain in the current collection and the price for the precise configuration. |
| anOrdain Model 1 | Enamel fumé dial options named by the guide are green, grey, blue and plum. The surface has subtle texture from a reaction between the enamel and silver dial base, giving the watch a craft-focused, dressier character. | The guide lists a 38 mm diameter and 11 mm thickness, with movement choices and a build-reservation process. It listed US$4,003 plus tax. Check current ordering arrangements and movement options. |
| Omega Seamaster Railmaster | The 2025 guide describes two 38 mm versions: grey with a black gradient and white Super-LumiNova, or beige fading to black with pumpkin-colored lume and small seconds at six. The latter has a more vintage-coded palette and layout. | The guide listed US$5,800 for the grey option and US$6,000 for the beige option. Confirm current references, specifications and prices with Omega. |
| Glashütte Original Sixties Chronograph | Grey, green and blue fumé gradient dials darken toward black at the edge. The grey and green versions have an irregular texture described as made with vintage tools and machinery; the blue is smoother. | The guide lists a 42 mm case and a starting price of US$9,300. Check which colors and references are currently offered and what the price covers. |
| Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris | Included in the guide as a fumé-dial option, but the available description does not establish a particular reference, dial color or treatment. | No price or specific configuration is established here. Identify a current Polaris reference with the relevant dial effect before comparing it or quoting a price. |
How to choose between them
For an integrated-bracelet sports watch
The Twelve pairs a saturated blue or purple fade and patterned dial with an integrated-bracelet silhouette. It is the clearest choice in this group if the dial is meant to be a visible color statement. Confirm that the specific titanium version and sales channel you want are still available.
For a dark, unified case-and-dial look
The Rado Anatom’s dark ceramic case is described as blending visually into the darker edge of its dial. That makes the transition between dial and case part of the design, rather than leaving the gradient as an isolated splash of color. Its color lineup is broad in the guide, but each current option needs checking.

For enamel texture and a dressier feel
The anOrdain Model 1 is the most explicit enamel choice on the shortlist. Its subtle surface texture gives the tonal fade another visual layer; consider it if dial craft matters more than a sports-watch case or added complications. The guide describes a reservation-based build process, so confirm the present ordering route and movement selection before planning around it.
For a tool-watch appearance with two distinct moods
The Railmaster offers a practical comparison within one model family: grey and black with white lume for a more contemporary look, or beige and black with pumpkin-colored lume and small seconds for a more vintage-coded one. Use current Omega specifications to verify the precise references, since the guide’s descriptions and prices date to 2025.

For a gradient chronograph
The Sixties Chronograph adds chronograph functionality to the shortlist. Its grey and green versions are the textured options described by the guide, while blue has a smoother surface. Choose based on whether you prefer that irregular texture as well as the color, and verify the current size, variant and starting price.
For a Polaris, start with the reference
“Polaris” alone is not enough to identify a fumé-dial configuration. The guide does not specify the exact reference or its features, so compare only after finding a current Jaeger-LeCoultre listing that confirms the dial effect and the rest of the watch’s specifications.

Check the watch beyond its dial
A striking fade can be a poor fit if the watch’s size, function or readability does not suit how you plan to wear it. Before settling on a model, compare the details that affect daily use:
- Fit: Check diameter and thickness where stated, then consider the case shape and bracelet or strap. The shortlist does not provide a full set of comparable dimensions for every model.
- Function: Decide whether you want a simpler display, small seconds or a chronograph. Do not infer a complication from a collection name; confirm it on the exact reference.
- Legibility: A reflective or shifting finish may look different from one angle to another. Casio warns that its iridescent gradient-glass treatment can make the dial difficult to read at some viewing angles (G-SHOCK Iridescent Color Series). That is a related glass effect, not the same thing as a conventional fumé dial.
- Water resistance and materials: Check the official specification for the exact reference if you expect to wear it in wet conditions. The shortlist does not establish water-resistance figures for every candidate.
- Current configuration: Colors, references, prices and stock can change. Match the product page to the precise dial, case material and complication rather than relying on a collection-level name.
Other gradient-dial alternatives
If one of the six is unavailable or does not fit your preferred style, these documented alternatives illustrate other ways brands use the effect. Their inclusion does not establish current stock.

Verify the exact reference before buying
Use official brand or authorized-retailer listings to confirm the full reference, dial color, case and bracelet material, movement, complication, dimensions, water resistance, price and availability in your region. This matters particularly for named collections with several dial colors or configurations, and for the Polaris, where a specific gradient-dial reference has not been identified here.
