Short answer: Open the Activity app on your Apple Watch, then scroll down to Steps or Total Steps. That is the quickest built-in way to see today’s count.
If you want the number displayed permanently on the watch face, there is an important limitation: Apple does not provide a native numerical Steps complication. You need a third-party step-counting app for that. The instructions below reflect Apple’s current watchOS 26 and iOS 26 documentation; labels can vary slightly by device, region, or later software updates.
The six ways at a glance
| Method | Best for | Shows a number directly? | Works without the iPhone nearby? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activity on Apple Watch | The fastest native check | Yes, after scrolling | Yes |
| Activity complication | One-tap access from the watch face | No; it shows rings or a timeline | Yes |
| Siri | Hands-free questions | Yes, when supported | Availability depends on Siri and device requirements |
| Fitness on iPhone | A convenient daily summary | Yes | No |
| Health on iPhone | Detailed history and troubleshooting | Yes | No |
| Third-party step app | A watch-face number, goals, and streaks | Yes, through its complication or widget | Usually, but refresh timing varies |
Apple Watch counts steps automatically when it is being worn correctly and Fitness Tracking is enabled. Apple’s built-in Activity system is not centered on steps, however. Its main rings measure active calories, exercise minutes, and standing or rolling activity rather than a step target. Apple explains the ring metrics in its Activity support documentation.
1. Check Steps in the Activity app on Apple Watch
This is the best option if you want the current native total without taking out your iPhone.

- Press the Digital Crown to open the app view.
- Open Activity, shown with the familiar Activity rings.
- Scroll down with the Digital Crown, or swipe upward on the screen.
- Read the Steps or Total Steps figure.
Continue scrolling to see related measurements such as step distance and flights climbed, where available. Apple documents this route as the place to view total steps, total distance, flights climbed, and activity information on the watch.
What this method does not do: it does not put the numeric total on the watch face. You must open Activity and scroll to it.
Can this work without an iPhone nearby?
Yes. Apple Watch can track activity and workouts while it is away from the paired iPhone. A cellular plan or Wi-Fi connection is not required merely for the watch to record activity locally. The iPhone is more useful for syncing, reviewing history, and investigating the data later. See Apple’s guidance on tracking activity without the paired iPhone.
2. Add the Activity complication as a shortcut
The built-in Activity complication is useful, but it is often misunderstood. It does not display a numerical step count. Apple’s current complication options are Activity Rings and Timeline, which show Activity information and provide a quick way to open the Activity app.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo add it:
- Touch and hold the current watch face.

- Swipe left until you reach the complications screen.
- Tap the position where you want the shortcut.
- Turn the Digital Crown to find Activity.
- Choose Rings or Timeline.
- Press the Digital Crown, then tap the watch face to save it.
Now you can tap the Activity complication from the face and scroll to Steps. This is the quickest native route from the face, but it is not the same as having steps visible at a glance. Apple’s complication guide lists the available built-in options.
3. Ask Siri for your step count
On a supported Apple Watch, try asking:
- What’s my step count?
- How many steps have I taken today?
- How far have I walked this week?
Apple specifically lists What’s my step count? as a Siri request for Health data. This is convenient while walking, exercising, or when using the screen is difficult.
Siri’s Health-data access is not universal. Apple’s current requirements include an iPhone running iOS 17.2 or later, and an Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2 running watchOS 10.2 or later, with newer supported devices potentially included. Apple also limits availability by language and region; its support page specifically identifies English in the United States and Mandarin Chinese in mainland China for this feature. Check Apple’s current Siri and Health requirements before treating the feature as available on every Apple Watch.
If Siri does not respond with Health information, check the iPhone:

4. See today’s steps in Fitness on iPhone
The Fitness app provides a larger-screen activity summary and is usually more convenient than reading a small watch display.
For today’s total
- Open Fitness on the iPhone.
- Tap Summary.
- Find Step Count.
- Tap the Step Count area for more detail.
Fitness also presents Step Distance. Do not confuse that metric with the number of steps: it is an estimated walking or running distance.
For a previous day
- Open Fitness.
- Tap Summary.
- Tap the Activity rings.
- Tap the Calendar button.
- Choose the date you want to inspect.
- Open the relevant step metric if it appears in that day’s activity summary.
Fitness is a good choice for a quick daily overview that combines activity rings, workouts, awards, and trends. It is not the best place to diagnose why two devices disagree or to inspect every contributing data source.

5. Use Health for step history and data controls
Health is the most useful iPhone app when the question is not merely “How many steps have I taken?” but also “Where did this number come from?”
Open the Steps record
- Open Health on the iPhone.
- Tap Search.
- Tap Activity.
- Tap Steps.
The Steps page can provide daily totals along with weekly, monthly, and yearly views. It also gives access to detailed records, data sources, and manual entry. Apple documents the category and history controls in its Health activity-data guide.
Pin Steps to Health’s Summary
- Open Health.
- Tap Summary.
- Tap Edit next to Pinned.
- Add Steps.
- Tap Done.
After that, Steps appears on the Health Summary screen instead of requiring a search each time. Apple also provides instructions for pinning health categories.
Inspect the sources behind the number
From the Steps page, open Data Sources & Access. Health can receive step data from the iPhone, Apple Watch, compatible apps, Bluetooth devices, and manual entries. Apple’s documented default priority order is:
- Manually entered data.
- Data from iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
- Data from apps and Bluetooth devices.
You can inspect and reorder sources where Apple provides that control. This is important when a pedometer app, another wearable, an old iPhone, or a manual record is contributing to the displayed total. Health does not always behave like a simple addition of every number from every device; the selected sources and their priority affect the result.
6. Install a third-party step app for a watch-face number
If your requirement is specifically seeing 4,327 steps without opening an app, a third-party complication is the practical solution. Apple’s native complication catalog does not include a numerical Steps complication.

Examples listed in the U.S. App Store include:
- Duffy – Steps Complication, which offers a step complication and reads step, distance, flights-climbed, and activity-energy data from HealthKit.
- Pedometer++, which provides step-count views on iPhone and Apple Watch.
- StepsApp Pedometer, which supports Apple Health, Apple Watch, goals, trends, and history.
These are examples, not a universal recommendation. App features, watch compatibility, pricing, subscriptions, privacy policies, and regional availability can change. Check the current App Store listing before installing.
Generic setup
- Install a step app that explicitly supports Apple Watch complications.
- Open it on the iPhone and grant permission to read Steps from Health when prompted.
- Make sure the Apple Watch version is installed or enabled.
- Touch and hold the watch face.
- Tap Edit, then swipe to the complications screen.
- Tap the desired complication position.
- Scroll to the third-party app and choose its Steps complication.
- Press the Digital Crown to save.
A third-party step app may also offer a step goal, streaks, notifications, an iPhone widget, or a dedicated watch app. Those features are the main reason to choose one over the native Activity app.
Use a Smart Stack widget instead
On watchOS 26, some third-party developers can provide widgets for the Smart Stack. Turn the Digital Crown upward or swipe up from the watch face to open the Smart Stack. You can add or rearrange available widgets from the bottom of the stack. This can provide a quick step total without taking up a permanent complication slot, but it depends on whether the chosen app supplies a watchOS widget. See Apple’s Smart Stack instructions and its watchOS 26 overview.
Why the Activity rings do not show steps
Apple’s Activity system is built around goals other than step totals:
| Activity measure | What it represents | Is it a step count? |
|---|---|---|
| Move ring | Active calories | No |
| Exercise ring | Minutes of qualifying activity | No |
| Stand or Roll ring | Hours or periods meeting Apple’s standing or rolling criteria | No |
| Steps | Total detected steps for the selected period | Yes |
| Step Distance | Estimated distance walked or run | No |
That is why closing the rings does not tell you whether you have reached 10,000 steps. Apple’s native Activity goals are ring goals, not a built-in 10,000-step goal. A third-party step app can set a step target if that is the progress measure you want.
Fitness versus Health: which iPhone app should you use?
| App | Best for | History | Data-source controls | Manual step entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Activity on Apple Watch | Checking the current count on your wrist | Limited compared with iPhone | No detailed controls | No |
| Fitness on iPhone | A convenient daily activity overview | Daily date browsing and activity summaries | Limited | No |
| Health on iPhone | Detailed records, trends, sources, and corrections | Daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly views | Yes | Yes |
| Third-party step app | Watch-face display, goals, streaks, and notifications | Depends on the app | Usually reads Apple Health data | Depends on the app |
A useful rule is: use Activity for a quick wrist check, Fitness for a readable activity summary, and Health when you need history or want to find the source of a discrepancy.
Troubleshooting missing, stale, or different step counts
A third-party complication shows an old number
Third-party complications are not guaranteed to behave as real-time counters. watchOS controls background complication updates and can delay refreshes to manage system resources. A complication may also be reading from Health rather than directly from the native Activity display.
Try this sequence:
- Open the third-party step app on the Apple Watch once.
- Open Health on the iPhone and confirm that the app is allowed to read Steps.
- Compare its number with Activity → Steps on the watch.
- In Health, open Activity → Steps → Data Sources & Access and review the contributing sources.
- If it remains stale, use Activity as the current native reference or try a different app.
Apple’s developer documentation explains the timeline model for complications and why background updates are system-controlled.
Steps are missing entirely
Work through these checks in order:
- Enable Fitness Tracking. On the iPhone, open Health, tap your profile picture, choose Devices, select Apple Watch, tap Privacy Settings, and turn on Fitness Tracking.
- Check how the watch is worn. It should be snug, above the wrist bone, with the sensors touching your skin.
- Check data sources. In Health, open Activity → Steps → Data Sources & Access and confirm that the Apple Watch is supplying data.
- Check app permissions. A third-party app cannot display Health steps correctly if it has not been granted access.
- Restart or update the devices if the issue began after a software change. This is general troubleshooting, not a guaranteed repair.
- Calibrate the watch if distance, pace, calorie, Move, and Exercise readings are also abnormal.
Apple says Activity relies on arm motion and the accelerometer. Holding the watch arm unusually still, wearing the watch loosely, or wearing it in the wrong position can affect measurements. Apple’s activity-measurement guidance and wearing-position guidance provide the relevant fit recommendations.

Calibrate Apple Watch for better activity measurements
Calibration primarily improves distance, pace, calorie, Move, and Exercise calculations and helps the watch learn your stride length. It is not a guaranteed fix for every raw step-count difference, but it is worthwhile when several activity measurements look wrong.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- On the iPhone, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
- Confirm that Location Services is on.
- Tap System Services and turn on Motion Calibration & Distance.
- Go outdoors to an open area with good GPS reception.
- Open Workout on the Apple Watch.
- Start Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run.
- Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes.
Apple’s full calibration instructions cover the same process.
Apple Watch and iPhone show different totals
Both the iPhone and Apple Watch contain motion sensors, and Health can receive data from multiple devices and apps. The two screens should not automatically be assumed to show an identical device-only total, nor should their numbers be assumed to simply add together.
Open Health → Search → Activity → Steps → Data Sources & Access. Review which devices and apps are present and which source has priority. Also check whether a manual entry or another wearable has contributed data. Comparing the native Activity total with a third-party app can be misleading if the app has not refreshed or is displaying a different Health view.
Add a known missing total manually
If you know the number of steps that should be recorded for a specific period, you can add it to Health:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Health.
- Tap Search.
- Tap Activity, then Steps.
- Tap Add Data.
- Enter the date, time, and number of steps.
- Tap Done.
Manual entry records a value; it does not reconstruct movement that Apple Watch never measured. Use it carefully because Apple gives manually entered data the highest default source priority. Adding a duplicate of an existing watch or iPhone record can make the Health history misleading.

Weekly Summary is not a guaranteed weekly step report
Current watchOS 26 documentation describes Weekly Summary as showing a daily average and weekly total for progress toward closing the Activity rings. It does not promise a weekly step total there. Older watchOS versions and older instructions may describe different information, so use Health on the iPhone for reliable weekly, monthly, and yearly step history.
The daily total is not automatically a per-workout step total
The Steps figure in Activity is an all-day total for the selected period. Apple’s standard Workout interface emphasizes metrics such as active calories, heart rate, and distance; Apple does not document a universal native per-workout step total. Some third-party workout or pedometer apps may offer that detail, but it varies by app.
Which method should you choose?
- Want the fastest native answer on your wrist? Open Activity and scroll to Steps.
- Want one-tap access from the watch face? Add the Activity complication, remembering that it opens Activity rather than showing the number.
- Want a hands-free answer? Ask Siri, if your device, software, language, and region support Health-data requests.
- Want today’s activity on a larger display? Use Fitness on the iPhone.
- Want yesterday’s steps, long-term charts, or source controls? Use Health.
- Want the number permanently visible on the face? Install a third-party step app with a complication.
- Want a 10,000-step goal, streaks, or alerts? Choose a third-party app rather than treating the Move ring as a step goal.
Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I add Steps as an Apple Watch complication?
Apple’s native complications provide Activity Rings or Timeline, not a numerical Steps complication. To see a number directly on the face, install a third-party step app that supplies a complication.
Does the Activity ring show my steps?
No. The Move ring represents active calories, Exercise represents qualifying exercise minutes, and Stand or Roll represents Apple’s standing or rolling criteria. Steps are a separate metric inside the Activity app.
Can I see yesterday’s steps on Apple Watch?
The native watch interface is primarily designed for the current day. For dependable day-by-day, weekly, monthly, and yearly step history, open Fitness or Health on the iPhone.
Can Siri tell me how many steps I have taken?
Siri can answer Health-data requests such as “What’s my step count?” on supported devices and software. Availability depends on hardware, watchOS or iOS version, language, and region.
Why is my third-party step complication behind the Activity total?
The app may not have refreshed, may lack permission to read Steps in Health, or may be using a different data source. Open the app, check its Health access, compare it with Activity, and review Health’s Data Sources & Access page.
Can I set a native 10,000-step goal on Apple Watch?
No. Apple’s native Activity goals use the Move, Exercise, and Stand or Roll rings. A third-party pedometer app can provide a step goal and related notifications.
Does calibration fix inaccurate step counts?
Calibration mainly improves distance, pace, calorie, Move, and Exercise calculations and helps learn stride length. It may help with broader activity inaccuracies, but Apple does not present it as a guaranteed fix for every step-count discrepancy.
The Bottom Line
For a quick native check: open Activity on Apple Watch and scroll to Steps. For history: use Health on iPhone. For a number permanently visible on the watch face: install a third-party app with a Steps complication, and expect its refresh timing to be controlled by watchOS rather than guaranteed in real time.
