OMEGA says NASA declared the Speedmaster “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions” on 1 March 1965. The 60th anniversary fell in 2025, marking a milestone OMEGA describes as the start of the watch’s journey into space.
When was the Speedmaster flight qualified?
OMEGA dates NASA’s declaration to 1 March 1965. The wording OMEGA attributes to NASA is “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions.” The brand published its 60th-anniversary retrospective on 29 April 2025, six decades after the date it reports.
The date and quoted wording come from OMEGA’s retrospective, not an original NASA qualification record. The account does not name a NASA speaker for the declaration. OMEGA’s 60 Years Since NASA Qualification
What did the milestone mean for the Speedmaster?
OMEGA presents the 1965 qualification as the official beginning of the Speedmaster’s spaceflight history. It says the watch has since been part of every Moon landing. That broad historical claim is OMEGA’s account; the cited retrospective does not provide a mission-by-mission record.

#1 Best Overall
- Model 310.30.42.50.01.002
The significance is the institutional milestone OMEGA attributes to NASA: the Speedmaster was declared qualified for manned space missions. The retrospective does not detail the qualification process, so it cannot establish from this account alone which tests were conducted, what conditions applied, or how NASA reached its decision.
What the anniversary account does not document
OMEGA’s retrospective supports the date and attributed declaration, but it is not the underlying NASA decision record. It does not identify the references tested, describe a test protocol, report performance results, or explain procurement. Those details should not be inferred from the qualification wording.

Modern context: today’s Moonwatch is not the 1965 test watch
OMEGA’s current Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional is relevant as modern product context, not as evidence of the precise watch NASA evaluated in 1965. In a 5 March 2024 announcement, OMEGA described the current line’s Calibre 3861 as an evolution of Calibre 321; that does not establish that the modern model or movement was part of the 1965 evaluation. The anniversary retrospective does not identify a dedicated 60th-anniversary watch release.
