A Century of TUDOR in Conversation with Cole Pennington

Cole Pennington argues TUDOR's century has been shaped by consistency: reliable time at moderate prices, watches that prove themselves in demanding work, and gradual refinement rather than pivots.

TUDOR’s own account of its history, as Cole Pennington presented it at a Bangkok Watch Week 2026 symposium, comes down to one idea: reliable time at moderate prices, held steady for roughly a century rather than reinvented. In a feature published October 8, 2026, #legend Thailand reported the conversation, and Pennington’s argument is that the brand’s progress has come from consistent refinement, not from a dramatic change of direction.

The founding idea that never changed

The feature traces TUDOR’s name to a registration in 1926 and links both the name and the early visual identity to the Tudor dynasty. It says the emblem moved from an elongated T to a Tudor Rose and then to a shield. The point that matters for the interview is the founding promise itself. Asked why the brand has kept its direction, Pennington answered:

“Hard to speak on someone’s behalf, of course, but my guess would be the fact that the original vision put forth in 1926, that I think then it was reliable time at moderate prices, we stuck to it. There was never a pivot.”

He also framed the same principle as a product test: “To make the best possible watch, the best possible price, it has to work and it really has to work when it counts.”

A century of watches in the field, as the feature tells it

The feature organises TUDOR’s history around people doing demanding work: explorers, military divers, racing participants and rescue swimmers. The table below lists the episodes and dates the article reports, with the qualification that they are the magazine’s account and have not been checked here against TUDOR’s archives or against expedition, naval or military records.

Period (as reported) Episode What the feature says
1926 Name registration TUDOR registered; name and early identity tied to the Tudor dynasty; emblem moves from elongated T to Tudor Rose to shield.
1950s British North Greenland Expedition Oyster Prince watches accompanied members of the Royal Geographical Society and the British Royal Corps of Engineers. Timekeeping was compared daily with radio time signals in sub-zero conditions to study the effects of cold and lubricant viscosity.
1956 French Marine Nationale The navy selected TUDOR based on accuracy, reliability, price and serviceability.
1960s US Navy Associated with Underwater Demolition Teams and Reference 7928; watches worn by US Navy rescue swimmers involved in recovering Apollo capsules.
1970s onward Racing and design TUDOR Watch Racing Team in Japan and the Macau Grand Prix; the Le Royer described as representative of 1980s design.
1997–2003 Ambassador Tiger Woods reported as a TUDOR ambassador for this period.
2010s Black Bay The rise of the Black Bay line in this decade.
2017 Ambassador David Beckham’s association with the brand dated to this year.

The watch as supporting actor

The most distinctive claim in the conversation is about the role of the watch itself. Pennington described it as a supporting element in stories about people and missions, not the protagonist:

“Our philosophy is not to be the star. We are there to support and not necessarily make a big deal out of anything.”

He summed up the approach as “Send the watch to do something and then talk about it, basically.” The feature presents “Born to Dare” as language that fits the pattern it sees across earlier stories, including exploration and rescue work. It is the magazine’s framing of that pattern rather than a line Pennington is quoted making in the same sense.

Why not simply make the Black Bay Chronograph thinner?

The conversation turns to proportions, and the Black Bay Chronograph is the article’s example. The feature frames a question readers often raise: why not release a watch at 39 millimetres in a thinner case? Pennington’s answer is about engineering cost in time rather than in materials:

“What people don’t understand, they often say, well, why don’t you just come out with a watch in 39 millimeters in a thinner case? The answer is that it takes thousands of hours of minute engineering to shave away.”

  • Titanium Unidirectional Rotatable Bezel with Ceramic Matte Black Disc and 60 Minute Scale with Beige Luminescent Coating

The “thousands of hours” figure is Pennington’s own scale for the work. The feature does not document an engineering study behind it, and the 39-millimetre case is an illustration in the interview, not a specification for any particular reference.

Consistency as the next chapter

Looking ahead, Pennington asks for steady progress rather than a change of identity:

“I want to see consistency. I think keep incrementally getting better and better and doing what we’re doing already. I think a massive pivot just isn’t in the brand DNA.”

He describes the goal as a process with no fixed endpoint: “What the brand would like to see, I would say is over time, putting in the work to keep refining everything together, get to its final form, and there really is no final form. And so it’s kind of this continuous pursuit.”

How much weight to give this source

  • What it is: a magazine interview and feature, not a buying guide or an official TUDOR history. Pennington is identified by the article as the symposium participant, and the feature does not give his job title.
  • Event date: the feature says the symposium took place on “that Friday evening” but does not state the calendar date.
  • Statistics: the feature contains no independently published statistics. The 39-millimetre figure and the “thousands of hours” are interview remarks.
  • Historical claims: the dates and episodes are the magazine’s account and are not independently confirmed in this piece.
