At Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s (GTH) September 2026 specialist jewellery, watches and silverware sale at The Somerset Auction Rooms, the three standout lots were a George III sterling silver flatware group at £3,100, a Victorian sterling silver tea service at £2,500, and an 18ct gold Patek Philippe hunter pocket watch at £2,850. These are the reported prices for selected lots in one sale. They are not appraisals of similar objects, and they do not measure the wider market.

GTH’s own recap of the September sale names the lots below, along with the makers, hallmark details and condition notes it recorded for each. The recap does not say whether the prices include buyer’s premium, so read them as the sold figures reported by the auction house.

The Patek Philippe hunter watch
The watch is the sale’s only result in the watch category in these reports, and it is the one most relevant to our readers. A hunter case is a closed-face pocket watch: a metal cover protects the dial, and it is opened to read the time. That makes it a different object from a wristwatch, even when the maker and metal are the same, so it should not be compared directly with wristwatch sales.
GTH’s description gives two points that matter when assessing a result like this: the case is in 18ct gold, and the watch is described as being in good condition for its age. The report does not describe the movement, case number or service history, so those details cannot be inferred from the sale.

The silverware results
George III sterling silver flatware at £3,100
The flatware group is the highest reported price in the sale. It included examples by three named makers, Randle Chatterton, John Lias and Solomon Hougham. Because the report names several makers, a group like this is valued by the quality, completeness and condition of the pieces, and the reports do not break the total down by item. The lot is therefore best read as a single collective result.
Victorian neo-classical tea service at £2,500
This service was made by Savory & Smily, listed in the reports as Goldsmiths Alliance, and is hallmarked London, 1872. The London hallmark gives a date and maker’s mark that can be checked against standard reference books. The one condition issue recorded is the broken handle on the coffee pot. Damage to a single piece in a multi-piece service affects the price more than most readers expect, because a set is valued as a whole.

How to read these results
- They are single-sale results. Each figure is for one lot at one auction, in one room, on one date.
- They are not valuations. A sold price reflects the day’s bidding, the lot’s condition and what was offered, not a fixed value for a similar object.
- Makers and hallmarks explain the object, not the price. Named makers and dated London hallmarks help identify what was sold. They do not show what a comparable piece would fetch elsewhere.
- Condition notes are short. GTH recorded one defect for the tea service and one favourable description for the watch. Other condition details, if any, are not in the reports.
Demand, in GTH’s words
In an earlier GTH report, consultant valuer Deborah Cole said: “There was strong demand for both modern and antique jewellery, vintage watches and particularly silver, which is at an all time high.” That comment refers to the earlier sale. It is not an assessment of the September results, but it does describe the demand GTH reported for these categories at that time.
