Laurent Ferrier’s natural escapement uses two oppositely rotating escape wheels to deliver alternating impulses directly to the balance. The arrangement revisits a mechanism associated with Abraham-Louis Breguet, but its practical success depends on managing a delicate balance between wheel play and friction. Laurent Ferrier says its modern geometry and materials address that challenge in the FBN229.01; the available sources do not establish an independently measured accuracy or efficiency advantage over a Swiss lever escapement.
What an escapement does
An escapement meters energy from a watch’s gear train and delivers it in timed impulses to the balance, the oscillating component that helps regulate timekeeping. The route by which that impulse reaches the balance differs between the familiar Swiss lever design and a natural escapement.
The Swiss lever’s indirect impulse
In Laurent Ferrier’s description, the escape-wheel teeth slide against ruby pallets on a lever. The lever then transfers momentum to the balance. This path involves sliding contact, which creates friction and calls for lubricant that can degrade over time. The Swiss lever also has practical strengths: Laurent Ferrier characterizes it as reliable and comparatively straightforward to service and regulate.
The natural escapement’s direct impulse
A single escape wheel rotating in one direction can impulse the balance in only one direction. A natural escapement therefore uses a second wheel rotating the other way to provide the alternating impulse required by the balance’s oscillation. In Laurent Ferrier’s account, columns on the upper faces of the wheels act on a double table roller attached to the balance, while a lever between the wheels provides a resting point for those columns. This is the manufacturer’s explanation of its mechanism.

Why the historical design was difficult to manage
Laurent Ferrier dates Abraham-Louis Breguet’s completion of a watch featuring an échappement naturel to 1802. The brand says the design faced a sensitive wheel-play compromise: excessive play could produce variable impulses or stop the escapement, while insufficient play could lead to excessive friction.
Laurent Ferrier says it addresses backlash by positioning the driving wheel asymmetrically against the driven wheel and optimizing the geometry and gearing, while retaining a small amount of play. That description explains the design intent; it is not an independent comparative test of performance. Laurent Ferrier’s 2024 explanation of the natural escapement also dates the company’s first automatic movement with this system to 2012.

How the FBN229.01 implements the escapement
The FBN229.01 Square Micro-Rotor uses nickel-phosphorus escape wheels made with UV-LIGA, a process for forming fine, high-aspect-ratio components from a microscopic mould. Laurent Ferrier says the columns are integrated into the wheel surfaces and made to fine tolerances. The lever and double table roller are silicon components made using DRIE. The brand says silicon gives these parts low friction and removes the need for lubrication at those interfaces.
Laurent Ferrier also argues that a lighter escapement needs less inertia and reduces energy consumption. These are manufacturer claims: the cited material does not provide controlled measurements comparing the FBN229.01’s efficiency or timekeeping with a Swiss lever watch.

The official Square Micro-Rotor – Evergreen specification gives the FBN229.01 a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour), a stated power reserve of 72 hours, 186 components and 35 jewels. Those figures belong to this reference, not to every Laurent Ferrier watch with a natural escapement. For example, the GPHG lists an 80-hour reserve for a distinct Galet Micro-rotor; it should not be substituted for the Square’s specification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the design trades off
The natural escapement’s direct impulse path and reduced sliding-contact aims are not a blanket replacement for the Swiss lever. The Swiss lever’s familiar advantages include reliability and relative ease of servicing and regulation, while Laurent Ferrier says its own natural escapement takes substantial time and expertise to fine-tune. In the brand’s 2024 article, an unattributed brand-authored sentence puts the manufacturing challenge this way: “The answer is simple, it takes much time and expertise to fine tune the system in order to make it operate perfectly, factors which preclude mass production.”
For a reader comparing mechanisms, the practical questions are how the impulse reaches the balance, how many escape wheels are used, where sliding contact occurs, and what adjustment and servicing demands follow. The natural escapement is an engineering choice with a distinct impulse path and specific tuning challenges—not, on the available evidence, a quantified guarantee of greater accuracy or efficiency.
