The Rolex Submariner reference 6538 is called the “Big Crown” for its oversized 8 mm winding crown, and a four-liner is a 6538 whose dial includes the words “Officially Certified Chronometer.” That wording distinguishes it from two-line 6538 dials; it signals a chronometer-certified movement, but it should not be assumed of every watch bearing the reference. The model is also closely associated with Sean Connery’s James Bond films, though that association does not establish that any particular surviving watch was used as a film prop.
What makes a 6538 a “Big Crown”?
The 6538 is a vintage Rolex Submariner from the mid-1950s. Specialist and auction descriptions use “Big Crown” for its notably large crown and its case without crown guards. Christie’s describes an 8 mm crown and a depth rating of 200 metres (660 feet) for its example; these are catalogue descriptions, not guarantees about every surviving watch. The familiar visual shorthand is a large crown, no crown guards and a black dial. For an actual watch, however, those traits alone do not establish its exact dial variant, originality or condition.
What does “four-liner” mean on the dial?
“Four-liner” describes the dial text: the model and depth wording, followed by “Officially Certified Chronometer,” printed on two additional lines. Phillips explains that the designation denotes a watch fitted with a chronometer-certified movement. Phillips also catalogues two-line 6538 counterparts, so the reference number by itself does not tell you whether a dial is a four-liner. Four-line examples are associated in the cited catalogues and specialist coverage with automatic calibre 1030 and 25 jewels. Keep that description tied to the examples and four-line configuration: the available accounts do not establish that every 6538 variant had the same movement or certification status. How does it compare with a two-line 6538?

Phillips characterizes four-liners as rarer and more valuable than two-liners in its catalogue descriptions. That is not a universal price rule: an individual watch’s originality, condition, provenance and exact configuration matter, and a catalogue comparison does not establish a current premium.

When was the reference 6538 made?
The evidence supports describing the 6538 as a short-lived, mid-1950s reference, but published dates do not align precisely. Fratello gives a 1954–1959 production span; Phillips describes a 1955 launch and a four-year production period, and Christie’s also dates its example’s introduction to 1955. Why is the 6538 associated with James Bond?
The reference has a strong screen association with Sean Connery’s Bond, and specialist accounts connect it with Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. Sotheby’s likewise uses the “James Bond Submariner” nickname. What size is a 6538?
Catalogue measurements vary by individual example. Phillips lists a 37 mm 1958 example and a 37.5 mm circa-1959 example; Sotheby’s lists a 39 mm circa-1958 example. Those figures should not be collapsed into one definitive case size on the basis of these catalogues. The same caution applies to the 8 mm crown and 200 m / 660 ft depth rating: they are reported specifications for described examples, not a measurement or guarantee for every watch. A Phillips 2024 auction record shows a specific 1958 four-liner selling for $279,400. That is a realized result for that lot, not a current estimate, a general market value or a reliable price for another 6538. For an individual watch, compare its dial and movement description with specialist catalogue records, then assess originality, condition, provenance and accompanying papers or accessories independently. Auction results are snapshots of particular lots rather than a substitute for a current appraisal.
