A high-beat mechanical watch has a faster-oscillating regulating system than many conventional mechanical watches. In the manufacturer examples covered here, “Hi-Beat 36000” and “high-frequency” mean 36,000 vibrations per hour; Grand Seiko also describes that rate as 10 beats per second. It is a movement specification, not a guarantee of better real-world timekeeping.

What does 36,000 vibrations per hour mean?

A mechanical watch’s regulating system oscillates to help govern the movement’s rate. Vibrations per hour (vph) states how many vibrations that system makes in an hour. Grand Seiko describes its 9S86 and 9S85 calibers as operating at 36,000 vph, or 10 beats per second; Zenith lists the El Primero 3600 at 36,000 vph as well. Seiko Watch Corporation’s 2016 announcement, Grand Seiko’s 2018 announcement and Zenith’s Chronomaster Original product page provide those specifications.

“High-beat” is a frequency description, not a complication or case style. One example is a GMT, which can display another time zone; another is a chronograph, which measures elapsed time. The two functions answer different needs, even when their movements share the same stated frequency.

Does a high-beat watch keep better time?

Frequency alone does not establish how accurately a particular watch will run in daily wear. Accuracy figures belong to a specific model and testing context. Grand Seiko’s published figures for the examples below are qualified as applying “when static”; they should not be treated as a prediction of daily performance or generalized to every high-beat watch.

Grand Seiko describes its own “Grand Seiko Standard” as an accuracy standard for its timepieces. Its technical page says the movement is tested for 17 days in six positions and at three temperatures. That is the stated Grand Seiko testing program, not a universal test for all makers or calibers. Grand Seiko’s technical explanation of the standard has further details.

The company’s 2018 release describes a separate, extended 34-day testing program for the cited V.F.A. model. Do not confuse that model-specific program with the 17-day description of the general standard. The 2018 announcement identifies the V.F.A. qualification and its accuracy specification.

Examples of high-beat watches

Example Frequency Published accuracy or function Reserve and other specifications
Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 36000 GMT, caliber 9S86; announced in 2016 36,000 vph; 10 beats per second +5 to −3 seconds per day when static; GMT 55-hour power reserve. Selected 2016 references list case diameters from 39.5 to 40.0 mm, with water resistance varying by reference. Seiko Watch Corporation, 2016.
Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 36000, caliber 9S85; 2018 variants 36,000 vph; 10 beats per second V.F.A.: +3 to −1; Special: +4 to −2; standard: +5 to −3 seconds per day when static 55-hour power reserve. The announced variants differed in materials, dimensions and limited-edition quantities. Grand Seiko, 2018.
Zenith Chronomaster Original, El Primero 3600 36,000 vph Automatic chronograph with 1/10-second chronograph function 60-hour power reserve; the cited regional product page describes a 38 mm stainless-steel model. Zenith product page, accessed 2026-09-28.

These manufacturer specifications are not a controlled performance comparison: the watches differ in complication, stated test conditions and source date. The published accuracy figures do not support ranking the models without accounting for those differences.

How to compare high-beat watches

Start with what you want the watch to do, then compare the complete specification rather than treating vph as a score. The Grand Seiko 9S86 example is a GMT; the Zenith El Primero 3600 example is a chronograph with a 1/10-second function. Their distinct complications may matter more to your choice than the shared frequency.

San Martin SN0054F GMT Automatic Watch, 38.3mm, Sapphire Crystal
  • DUAL-TIME GMT FUNCTION: The independently adjustable 24-hour GMT hand can track a second time zone while the conventional hour and minute hands display local time. A date window at 3 o’clock keeps everyday information easy to check, making the SN0054F practical for international calls, remote work, travel planning and daily use.
  • HIGH-BEAT AUTOMATIC MOVEMENT: The Hangzhou 6460 automatic GMT movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and includes 25 jewels, hand-winding, hacking seconds and an approximate 40-hour power reserve. Its four-hand layout combines hours, minutes, seconds and a dedicated 24-hour GMT indication for smooth, precise everyday operation.
  • COMPACT 38.3MM STEEL CASE: A 38.3mm diameter, 47.8mm lug-to-lug length and 12.4mm thickness create balanced proportions for everyday wear. The solid 316L stainless steel case, screw-down crown and screw-down case back provide a substantial build without pushing the watch into an oversized profile, while the 39mm steel bezel keeps the design visually balanced.
  • TOP-HAT SAPPHIRE AND BLUE LUME: The raised top-hat sapphire crystal uses an anti-reflective coating to improve dial visibility while adding a distinctive domed profile. BGW-X1 blue luminous material is applied to the hands and markers, supporting clear reading in changing light and low-light conditions.
  • 100M WATER RESISTANCE AND OTF CLASP: The solid 316L stainless steel bracelet tapers from 20mm at the lugs to 16mm at the clasp for a more refined fit. Its on-the-fly adjustable clasp allows tool-free micro-adjustment during the day, while 100-meter water resistance supports routine wear, rain and recreational swimming.
  • Accuracy and test conditions: Check the exact model’s published range and whether it applies under static testing or another stated method. Do not equate a specification with guaranteed performance on your wrist.
  • Maker’s testing standard: Identify what the manufacturer says it tested, for how long and under what conditions. Testing programs can differ by maker and by model.
  • Power reserve: The cited Grand Seiko examples list 55 hours; Zenith lists 60 hours for the cited Chronomaster Original. These are manufacturer-stated specifications, not comparative test results.
  • Case fit and water resistance: Check the exact reference. The Grand Seiko announcement includes different dimensions and water resistance across selected references; the Zenith page describes a 38 mm stainless-steel model.
  • Use and ownership: Consider whether you want a GMT or chronograph, and compare regional service access and current price through up-to-date manufacturer or authorized-retailer information.

What to know about older announcements and current availability

The Grand Seiko GMT release cited here dates to 2016, and the 9S85 variants to 2018. Their historical recommended prices do not establish current retail prices, availability or online inventory. Confirm the exact reference and current offer with the manufacturer or a reputable seller rather than relying on an old launch announcement.

More broadly, the cited manufacturer pages establish specifications for particular watches; they do not establish market-wide independent accuracy results, service intervals, durability comparisons or value rankings. Treat claims in those areas as requiring evidence specific to the watch and the conditions being discussed.
