How Watches Evolved into Wristwatches: From Portable Timekeepers to Everyday Essentials

Portable watches came first, but military timing needs, protective engineering and mass production made wristwatches the mainstream format by the 1930s.

Watches reached the wrist in stages: portable timekeepers appeared around 1500, pocket watches became practical by about 1700, jeweled bracelet watches emerged in the early 1800s, and Abraham-Louis Breguet made the clearest documented purpose-built wristwatch for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, in 1810. Military demands for instantly readable, hands-free timing then transformed the wristwatch from courtly novelty into essential equipment. Protective cases, luminous displays, automatic winding, water resistance and mass production made it the mainstream personal watch by the 1930s.

What changed when a watch moved to the wrist?

The wrist location solved a practical problem. A pocket watch had to be found, removed and opened, often beneath a coat. A wristwatch could be read immediately while its wearer kept both hands available. That difference mattered first to soldiers and aviators, then to civilians who wanted faster access and a more durable, legible timekeeper.

The evolution was therefore not a single invention. It combined changing social uses, smaller and tougher movements, improved visibility in darkness, and industrial production.

Portable watches came before wristwatches

Around 1500: the portable timekeeper

The Patek Philippe Museum places “the dawn of the portable timekeeper around 1500.” These early watches and richly decorated examples established that mechanical time could be carried, but portability did not yet mean wrist-wearing.

Around 1700: the pocket-watch standard

According to the Seiko Museum, pocket watches came into use around 1700. The owner pulled the watch from a pocket and opened its lid to read it. This arrangement suited monarchs, nobles, priests and other affluent users, but it was slow to consult and left the watch vulnerable when exposed.

Early wristwear was jewelry before it was equipment

Bracelet watches in the early nineteenth century

Noblewomen began wearing small watches set into jeweled bracelets in the early 1800s. The Seiko Museum cites a watch ordered by Napoleon for Empress Josephine in 1806. These pieces were primarily ornaments; their small size and limited accuracy prevented them from displacing pocket watches.

Breguet’s 1810 Queen of Naples commission

The strongest dated claim for the first purpose-built wristwatch comes from Maison Breguet’s archival register. On June 8, 1810, Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, ordered “a repeater watch for bracelet.” Breguet identifies watch no. 2639 as the world’s first known wristwatch: an exceptionally thin oval repeating watch mounted on a wristlet of hair and gold thread.

This distinction matters. Earlier watches may have been worn on the wrist, but Breguet’s record documents a watch specifically conceived for that location. “First wristwatch” can otherwise mean the earliest surviving wrist-worn object, the first purpose-designed model, or the first mass-produced military watch.

Why the military made wristwatches practical

Timing warfare without reaching into a pocket

By the late nineteenth century, armies increasingly coordinated bombardments and maneuvers by precise time. A pocket watch hidden beneath a trench coat was difficult to extract quickly. A wristwatch provided an immediate reading and left both hands free for weapons, maps and signals.

The 1880s Girard-Perregaux order

The Seiko Museum records that Emperor Wilhelm I of Germany ordered 2,000 wristwatches from Girard-Perregaux for naval officers in the 1880s. The watches used pocket-watch movements, wrist straps and protective metal mesh. Seiko calls this the first mass-produced wristwatch, while noting that the order was intended for training rather than battlefield service. The Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb likewise dates a 2,000-watch Girard-Perregaux production to 1880.

Second Boer War and early field designs

British soldiers wore wristwatches during the Second Boer War (1899–1902). Military models added features that later became normal civilian expectations:

  • Protective grilles or hinged covers over the crystal
  • Luminous hands and dials for low-light reading
  • Wire lugs and long straps that could fit over sleeves
  • Large crowns that pilots could operate while wearing gloves

World War I turned a specialist device into a social norm

World War I was the decisive adoption point. Radio-era commands, artillery schedules and coordinated battlefield movements made rapid time checks essential. Seiko describes wristwatches as essential to battlefield strategy and says the US Army is said to have been the first organization to issue them as standard hardware in 1912. Soldiers carried the habit home after the war, making wristwear acceptable for men as well as women.

The war also accelerated design priorities: readability, shock protection, luminous material, secure straps and operation while moving. The result was a watch that served as equipment rather than decoration.

Technology that made wristwatches dependable

Chronographs for aviation and timing

Seiko records that Breitling developed a chronograph wristwatch by 1915 with a separate pusher and a 30-minute timing limit, a configuration suited to pilots. A wrist-mounted timer was easier to operate during flight than a pocket instrument.

Automatic winding finally matched the wrist

Self-winding mechanisms predated wristwatches. Seiko credits Abraham-Louis Perrelet with a self-winding mechanism in 1777 and Breguet with a more reliable design in 1780. The benefit was limited while watches remained in pockets, where movement was less consistent and winding was easy to perform by hand.

John Harwood obtained a self-winding patent in 1924, and Fortis used the system in 1926 for what Seiko calls the world’s first self-winding wristwatch. Rolex’s 1931 Perpetual introduced a 360-degree rotor. Combined with the Oyster case, it made automatic winding and water resistance practical in one everyday watch.

Water and dust resistance

Rolex’s 1926 Oyster is described by Seiko as the first water- and dust-proof wristwatch. Its airtight case reduced failures and helped stabilize precision, addressing the widespread suspicion that wristwatches were fragile or inaccurate.

Complications proved the format’s capability

The Patek Philippe Museum documents Patek Philippe’s first wristwatch in 1868 and the first known perpetual-calendar wristwatch in 1925. These examples show that wristwatches could accommodate sophisticated complications before they became mass-market objects.

How each stage differed

Stage Typical wearer and setting Access and visibility Movement and protection Social meaning
Portable watches, c. 1500 Elite owners and collectors Carried, not continuously worn Early mechanical construction; protection varied Novelty and status
Pocket watches, c. 1700 onward Royals, nobles, professionals and affluent civilians Removed from a pocket and opened Primarily hand-wound; enclosed cases Respectability, wealth and utility
Jewelled bracelet watches, early 1800s Courtly women and aristocratic settings Visible on the wrist Small, mostly manual movements; limited accuracy Fashion and ornament
Breguet watch no. 2639, 1810 Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples Purpose-designed wrist access Thin oval repeating watch on a wristlet Luxury innovation
Military wristwatches, 1880s–1918 Naval officers, soldiers and pilots Instant reading with both hands free Protective grilles, luminous displays, wire lugs and long straps Operational equipment
Mainstream wristwatches, 1920s–1930s Military personnel and civilians Fast, legible daily access Water-resistant cases, automatic winding and standardized production Mass-market necessity and fashion

When did wristwatches replace pocket watches?

The transition was gradual rather than tied to one launch date. Seiko reports that wristwatch production exceeded pocket-watch production in Japan and worldwide by the 1930s, and that by the middle of that decade wristwatches had completely supplanted pocket watches as the mainstream format. Standardized parts, lower-cost mass production and smaller women’s models expanded ownership beyond military and upper-class users.

In practical terms, World War I created the demand and social acceptance; the 1920s supplied better engineering; and the 1930s completed the commercial replacement.

The short answer to the “first wristwatch” question

If “first” means the earliest documented watch designed specifically to be worn on the wrist, the best-supported answer is Breguet watch no. 2639, commissioned by Caroline Murat on June 8, 1810. If it means the first mass-produced military wristwatch, the Girard-Perregaux production for German naval officers in the 1880s is the relevant milestone. If it means widespread everyday use, World War I and the 1920s–1930s industrial expansion provide the answer.
