The 2022 Grand Lange 1 keeps its 41 mm diameter but trims its case height to 8.2 mm. That is the key change: a slimmer profile, not a smaller watch. A grey dial, two gold-case options and the hand-wound L095.1 movement complete the redesign. “Collector’s dream” is best read as editorial enthusiasm, not a claim about universal demand or investment potential.
What changed in the 2022 Grand Lange 1?
A. Lange & Söhne announced the redesigned Grand Lange 1 on March 30, 2022. The case remains 41 mm across and is 8.2 mm high. The reduction is in thickness: Hodinkee’s launch coverage gives the previous Grand Lange 1’s height as 8.8 mm, making the new case 0.6 mm thinner. For context, that report lists the original Lange 1 at 9.8 mm. The maker described the redesign as having “even more elegant proportions.”
The two reported references are 137.038 in white gold and 137.033 in pink gold. Both pair their case metal with a grey dial. The launch announcement specifies an 18-carat case in either metal.
How the dial balances asymmetry and legibility
The Grand Lange 1 retains the family’s off-centre arrangement rather than placing every display on a single central axis. The dial brings together the off-centre time display, a gold-framed outsize date, an Up/Down power-reserve indicator and recessed subsidiary dials. Hands and markers match the case metal: white gold on the white-gold model and pink gold on the pink-gold model.

The maker’s launch description pairs the white-gold version with a black leather strap and the pink-gold version with a red-brown leather strap. Those descriptions do not establish replacement strap dimensions or compatibility, so they are not enough to select an aftermarket strap.
What is inside: the hand-wound L095.1
The movement is the manually wound L095.1. A. Lange & Söhne says it uses one mainspring barrel, rather than the Lange 1’s double-barrel arrangement, while the larger movement diameter allows a maximum power reserve of 72 hours. The manufacturer’s launch specifications list 397 parts and 42 jewels.

Through the sapphire-crystal caseback, the movement shows an untreated German-silver three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing and a hand-engraved balance cock. The maker also describes the movement as assembled twice and hand-finished. These details speak to the construction and finishing; they do not establish production volume or collector demand.
How the Grand Lange 1 compares with smaller Lange 1 models
Diameter and thickness are useful starting points, but numbers alone cannot tell you how a watch will sit on your wrist. The available family comparisons show why it is worth trying the models on rather than assuming the thinner Grand will wear like a smaller watch.

If you are deciding between these proportions, compare them on wrist when possible. The 41 mm Grand’s thinner profile may be appealing, but it does not make its diameter smaller.

The redesign offers a specific combination that may appeal to a collector: a noticeably thinner case than its predecessor, the familiar asymmetric display, precious-metal construction and a manually wound movement with a stated 72-hour maximum reserve. Those are product characteristics, not proof that collectors broadly consider it a must-have.
