Hublot is easy to dismiss if its bold designs are not your taste or if you judge every model by the brand’s reputation for expensive, conspicuous watches. But the claim that Hublot has nothing behind the styling is too broad: the company makes in-house movements and has invested in distinctive materials. That does not make every Hublot a good buy. The fair question is whether a particular reference’s design, movement and materials justify its price to you.
Why do some watch fans dislike Hublot?
The criticism tends to combine three different arguments: that the designs are too loud, that the prices are hard to justify, and that some watches rely on externally sourced movements. Those points should be judged separately—and, especially for movement and value, against the exact model rather than the brand name alone.
A deliberately conspicuous design
Hublot’s modern identity is closely tied to the Big Bang, introduced in 2005. Its large case, exposed bezel screws and combinations of materials such as steel or red gold with titanium, ceramic, carbon fiber, Kevlar and rubber make it a statement watch, not a neutral one. Hodinkee describes the Big Bang as a design that brought sport, fashion, music and luxury together; that is an interpretation of its cultural appeal, not proof of quality. If you prefer restrained proportions and traditional styling, Hublot may simply not be for you.
The fusion concept itself predates the Big Bang: LVMH says Hublot’s first watch combining natural rubber and gold dates to 1980. The Big Bang made that mix central to the brand’s contemporary image. As Hublot CEO Julien Tornare put it to Hodinkee, “Big Bang is a big watch by definition,” and “Hublot helped create that trend.”

Price and movement concerns need model-level evidence
A luxury price invites comparison with other watches, including brands with a more traditional image. And Hublot’s range is not mechanically uniform. Fratello notes that the company offers impressive in-house calibers while some models use Sellita-based movements; it also calls the price of one 38 mm model high. That is a judgment about a particular model, not evidence that every Hublot is overpriced or uses the same movement.
What does Hublot make in-house?
There is a concrete answer to the idea that Hublot has no technical watchmaking capability: the company documents an in-house manufacture and the Unico caliber. LVMH says Unico movements are designed, manufactured and assembled at Hublot’s Nyon Manufacture, which it describes as covering 14,000 square meters. LVMH lists 330 components for a Unico movement. These are company-published details, not an independent assessment of finishing or value.

Unico in the 2026 Big Bang Original Soft Touch
In its 2026 announcement for the Big Bang Original Soft Touch, Hublot describes the Unico chronograph as fully in-house, with a column wheel, dual-clutch architecture and five patented innovations. The company states a 72-hour power reserve. That model has a 43 mm case diameter, a specification worth checking against your wrist and preferred fit before buying.
These specifications show that Hublot is doing more than selecting a case design and attaching a logo. They do not establish that every model contains Unico, that every buyer needs this architecture, or that the watch is worth its asking price. Check the caliber named for the precise reference you are considering.

Are Hublot’s materials more than a marketing story?
Materials are a substantial part of Hublot’s design approach. LVMH describes Magic Gold as an 18-carat gold alloy made by combining pure gold with boron carbide, produced in Hublot’s foundry. Hublot says development of Magic Gold involved four years of research and development with EPFL’s Metallurgy Lab. Those are manufacturer descriptions of the material and its development, not independent comparative test results.
For the 2026 Big Bang Reloaded, Hublot says its colored high-tech ceramic is 300 Vickers harder than conventional ceramic. The model has a 44 mm case diameter. Treat the hardness comparison as Hublot’s claim, and consider what the material means for your own priorities: appearance, weight, scratch resistance, and the practicalities of repair can matter as much as novelty.

How to decide whether a Hublot is worth its price
There is no universal value verdict. The sources available do not establish a reliable resale-retention statistic for Hublot as a whole. A more useful evaluation starts with the exact reference and the price in your market.
- Try the design and dimensions. Consider case diameter, thickness, wrist fit, dial legibility and visual presence. A design that looks distinctive in photographs may feel different on your wrist; buy only if you genuinely like wearing it.
- Verify the movement. Look up the caliber for the exact reference. Establish whether it is in-house or externally sourced, and, for a chronograph, whether its architecture and stated power reserve matter to you. Ask about service arrangements and costs before purchase.
- Assess the materials and finish. Identify whether the watch uses steel, titanium, ceramic, carbon, sapphire or a proprietary alloy. Weigh the look and feel against durability, weight and potential repair considerations.
- Check ownership details. For a new watch, confirm warranty eligibility and terms for the specific model and country. Hublot’s 2026 Big Bang Reloaded release describes up to ten years of international coverage through its 5+5 warranty; confirm eligibility and conditions with Hublot for the reference and market you are buying in. For a pre-owned watch, check its service history, condition and the seller’s reputation.
- Judge price and resale separately. Decide whether the watch’s design and technical attributes justify the price to you. If resale matters, compare dated, completed transactions for the exact reference rather than relying on a brand-wide retention claim.
The fair case for Hublot
Hublot’s critics are not necessarily wrong to dislike the look, question the price or scrutinize movement sourcing. They are on weaker ground when they treat those concerns as proof that every Hublot is technically empty. The Big Bang is a deliberate, high-visibility design, and Hublot’s documented work on Unico and materials such as Magic Gold shows real engineering ambition. Whether that ambition translates into a satisfying purchase depends on the specific watch—and on whether you want to wear it.
