The A. Lange & Söhne ODYSSEUS CHRONOGRAPH is a 100-piece, stainless-steel automatic chronograph distinguished by two centrally mounted chronograph hands and an unusual rapid-reset action. That layout preserves the family’s day and outsize-date displays instead of adding conventional chronograph subdials. The specifications and mechanism below are based on Lange’s official product information; this is not a report of physical inspection or wear testing.
What makes the ODYSSEUS CHRONOGRAPH different?
Introduced at Watches and Wonders in 2023, the watch is the ODYSSEUS family’s chronograph and the first self-winding chronograph from A. Lange & Söhne. It uses the L156.1 DATOMATIC calibre and is limited to 100 watches, according to the manufacturer’s 2023 model history and its official product page.
Rather than placing elapsed-time indications in the usual subsidiary counters at 3 and 9 o’clock, Lange puts both chronograph hands in the centre. The lozenge-tipped minute-counter hand and red chronograph-seconds hand share the dial with the regular time display. Lange says this arrangement retains the ODYSSEUS family’s characteristic day-of-week and outsize-date positions. The dial has a black main surface, white-gold notched baton appliqués, a palladium-coloured flange ring, and red accents on the 60 numeral and chronograph-seconds hand.
How does the central chronograph reset?
The reset is the mechanism’s most distinctive feature. The hands’ route back to zero depends on whether the measured interval is under or over 30 minutes:

- Under 30 minutes: the minute counter returns to its starting position, while the red seconds hand rapidly retraces the distance it travelled. It makes one reverse revolution for each measured minute.
- After 30 minutes: both chronograph hands move clockwise to zero. The seconds hand makes a full revolution for each minute it needs to advance to the reset point.
This is a reset-to-zero chronograph, not a split-seconds or rattrapante mechanism. A rattrapante has a second hand that can be stopped independently and then resynchronized; the manufacturer’s account of this watch describes a rapid return action instead. Lange discusses the distinction in its article on short-time measurement.
What do the two pushers control?
The pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock serve different purposes depending on the crown position. With the screw-down crown in its normal position, they start, stop, and reset the chronograph. Pull the crown out, and the pushers operate the day and date setting mechanism. The manufacturer’s product page describes these controls.
