Lange & Söhne Saxonia Moon Phase makes its strongest case through proportion: a large date at 12 and a moon-phase display with small seconds at 6 share one vertical axis. The result is a precious-metal automatic dress watch whose appeal rests less on visual drama than on balance, tactile detail and the movement behind the dial. Goulard’s verdict is strongly positive, with one practical reservation: the recessed moon-phase corrector.
Why the dial feels so balanced
The defining feature is the straight visual line between the large date at 12 o’clock and the moon-phase and small-seconds display at 6. Goulard captures the effect in his 16 September 2016 review for Monochrome Watches: “It is simple: remove the inscriptions, trace a line in the middle of the dial, from 12 to 6 and look closely. You’ll have a perfect symmetry.” It is an aesthetic judgment, but one grounded in a clear layout: the two largest indications anchor the dial without competing for attention.
The dial is described as solid silver with a slightly grained texture. Applied gold hour markers and polished hands add warmth, while the blue moon-phase disc and gold moon introduce a concentrated patch of color. The review says the disc is gold, laser engraved with 852 stars, and then coated blue. Those details give the restrained face texture and depth without disrupting its order.
Case, proportions and wearing comfort
The 2016 article reports a 40 mm case diameter and 9.8 mm thickness, in either 18k pink gold or 18k white gold. It describes polished and satin-finished surfaces, sapphire crystals at the front and caseback, and water resistance of 30 m. These are specifications reported by that historical review, not a current manufacturer verification.

Goulard considers this Moon Phase larger than the other Saxonia variants discussed in his article, yet still proportionate. Its curved, short lugs and relatively modest thickness help it sit comfortably on the wrist, in his assessment. An alligator-leather strap with a gold pin buckle completes the configuration described in the review.
Movement and indications
The review identifies the automatic movement as in-house calibre L086.5 and reports a 72-hour power reserve and a frequency of 21,600 beats per hour. The functions are hours, minutes, small seconds with a stop mechanism, jumping large date and moon phase. Goulard regards the reserve as useful for ordinary wear, offering the example of leaving the watch off over a weekend and returning to it on Monday; that is an illustration in the article, not a separately documented test.

The movement’s finish is an important part of the watch’s appeal, especially visible through the sapphire caseback. Goulard describes a full rotor with a platinum peripheral mass, Glashütte ribbing, hand-chamfered edges, polished sinks and screw heads, a black-polished escape-wheel bridge, an engraved balance cock, and German-silver plates and bridges. These are the reviewer’s observations in 2016, rather than a substitute for a current manufacturer specification.
Moon-phase accuracy and adjustment
The 2016 review reports that the moon phase deviates by one day after 122.6 years. This is the article’s model-specific claim; it should not be read as a result of independent testing or as confirmation of a current specification.

The less successful detail is how the display is adjusted. The moon-phase corrector is a recessed pusher on the case side. Goulard finds it less elegant and less practical than adjustment through the crown. That small ergonomic compromise stands out precisely because the rest of the watch is so carefully resolved.

Who this Saxonia Moon Phase suits
This is a compelling choice for someone drawn to formal watchmaking expressed through restraint: a symmetrical dial, precious-metal case, useful date and moon-phase displays, and a movement whose finishing rewards a closer look. Its character is elegant rather than theatrical. Someone primarily seeking a more dramatic or technically showy complication may find the design too quiet, while a wearer who values visual balance and comfortable proportions is more likely to share the reviewer’s enthusiasm.
