The A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Striking Time is a mechanical watch with jumping hour and minute numerals, plus a striking mechanism visible on the dial side. It sounds the hour and each quarter-hour automatically; it is not a minute repeater and does not chime a time requested by the wearer. For white-gold reference 145.029, Lange lists a 44.2 mm case, 36-hour power reserve and 3-bar water resistance. The strike can be silenced with a pusher on the lower-right case flank.
How the Zeitwerk Striking Time works
Instead of hands, the Zeitwerk displays the time with large jumping numerals. Its striking mechanism is also on view from the dial side, making the watch’s time display and its chiming action parts of the same visual composition. Lange describes it as the first mechanical wristwatch to combine a jumping-numeral display with a visible striking mechanism.

The two hammers have different jobs: the right hammer strikes a higher, clear tone at every quarter-hour, and the left hammer sounds a lower-pitched tone at the top of each hour. Hardened-steel gongs are matched to the hammers; Lange says hammer weight, impact angle and impact speed are tuned to the gongs. These are the maker’s descriptions of the design, not independent measurements of loudness or pitch. A. Lange & Söhne’s model-family description explains the striking sequence and visible mechanism.
Is it a minute repeater?
No. The Striking Time automatically signals hours and quarter-hours as time passes. It does not sound a requested time on demand. Lange distinguishes it from the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater, which can chime hours, ten-minute intervals and individual minutes when activated by the wearer. The Decimal Strike is another separate model, with a ten-minute striking interval. Lange’s 2020 explanation of its striking watches describes these differences.

Can you turn off the chime?
Yes. Press the pusher on the lower-right case flank to deactivate the striking mechanism; pressing it again reactivates it. Lange says the hammers deflect inward, away from the gongs, and remain there until the pusher is used again. This describes how the silencing function works, not how loud the watch sounds in a particular room or whether it suits a specific setting.
Reference 145.029: specifications and materials
The figures below are for the white-gold 145.029, not every Zeitwerk Striking Time variant. Lange’s reference page lists the model as outside its current collection; that status applies to this reference page and does not establish inventory or collection status for all variants.
| Specification | 145.029, as listed by Lange |
|---|---|
| Case | 18-carat white gold; 44.2 mm diameter and 13.1 mm height |
| Dial and back | Black solid-silver dial; sapphire-crystal caseback |
| Water resistance | 3 bar |
| Movement | Manual-winding calibre L043.2; 528 parts; 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 Hz) |
| Power reserve | 36 hours |
| Other movement features | Power-reserve indicator and constant-force escapement |
| Strap and lug spacing | Black alligator leather strap; 21 mm lug spacing |
These details come from Lange’s official 145.029 page. Its 44.2 mm diameter and 13.1 mm height are useful starting points when considering fit, but dimensions alone cannot establish how a watch will wear on an individual wrist.

Other Striking Time references
Lange’s model-family page also documents pink-gold reference 145.032 and limited platinum reference 145.025, alongside white-gold 145.029. The specifications above should not be applied to those versions without consulting their own reference details. The model-family page identifies the documented materials and references.

The white-gold 145.029’s listed 36-hour reserve belongs to its manual-winding L043.2 calibre. It should not be confused with specifications for a later, second-generation Zeitwerk. Lange’s article about the new Zeitwerk describes calibre L043.6 and a 72-hour reserve; those are not the Striking Time’s L043.2 figures. The later movement is discussed in Lange’s article on the new Zeitwerk.

The 145.029 reference page says it is outside Lange’s current collection and offers a “register your interest” action. That does not establish whether a particular new-old-stock or pre-owned watch is available. For a specific listing, check the reference, condition, provenance, included documentation, service history and current price; these vary by individual watch and seller.

The listed 21 mm lug spacing makes a 21 mm leather strap a relevant starting point for this reference, but width alone does not guarantee compatibility. Confirm the attachment style and actual strap dimensions for the specific watch before ordering a replacement.
Review verdict
The Striking Time’s defining idea is unusually coherent: jumping numerals make the display mechanical and digital in appearance, while the exposed hammers and gongs turn the automatic hour-and-quarter-hour signal into a visible complication. Its appeal depends on wanting that specific combination—not on expecting a minute repeater that reports a chosen time. The 145.029’s dimensions and 36-hour reserve are concrete reference-level considerations, while fit, sound in practice, accuracy, service costs and market value require evidence beyond the published specifications.
