What is reported about the seizure
According to Rapaport’s report of October 8, 2026, HMRC investigated suspected payroll fraud and found that more than GBP 7 million had been spent on luxury watches over a three-year period. The same report says five watches worth around GBP 1 million were seized from an individual who was attempting to leave the UK, that the assets were later forfeited, and that Wilsons Auctions will sell the timepieces on behalf of UK government bodies and law enforcement agencies.

About the Philippe Dufour Simplicity
The Simplicity is a time-only, manually wound watch with 21 jewels. Phillips’ auction catalogues say the model was first presented in 2000. Catalogued examples come in 34 mm and 37 mm cases, in pink gold, white gold, platinum, and at least one steel example, and they carry different dial options and individual details.
Phillips also estimates that about 200 examples were made over a 12-year period. That figure is the auction house’s estimate, not a verified production census from the maker, so it should be read as a rough scale rather than a fixed count. The model’s appeal is tied to its hand finishing and traditional watchmaking, which is why collectors pursue it, but the sale itself does not establish that this watch is more valuable than any other example.

Recent auction results for other examples
Phillips’ published results show how widely Simplicity prices can vary. They are historical results for individual watches, in different currencies, at different sales. They are not an estimate, appraisal, or expected hammer price for the forfeited Simplicity.

How to compare a Simplicity with these results
Before you draw any conclusion from a comparison, check these points for each watch:
- case metal and diameter
- dial and individual configuration
- movement and case identity
- condition and service history
- provenance and whether the certificate, box and accessories are present
- estimate compared with the final hammer price
- sale date and currency
A case in steel and a case in platinum, or a 2002 example and a 2020 example, may differ in ways that matter more than the headline figure.
