But there is no single, standard 5512 story. Dial, case, movement and service details vary between surviving watches, and a striking feature alone cannot establish a watch’s originality or provenance.
Why the Submariner 5512 matters
The 5512 belongs to the transition from the early Submariner to the crown-guard form associated with the later line. Rolex places the addition of crown guards in the Submariner’s development in 1959; Phillips identifies the 5512 as the first reference to receive them. That gives the reference a distinctive place in the family history, but it does not mean every 5512 was made to one unchanging specification.
The broader Submariner story began earlier. Rolex says the model launched in 1953 with a 100-metre (330-foot) guarantee, increased to 200 metres (660 feet) the following year. Those are family-history figures, not specifications to apply automatically to every 5512. Rolex also reports that diver Dimitri Rebikoff gave feedback after 132 dives at depths from 12 to 60 metres (40 to 195 feet), concluding that “the Submariner had all the necessary features to assist divers underwater.” His assessment concerns the Submariner generally, not this reference in particular. Rolex’s Submariner history and official timeline provide the family context.
What changes from one 5512 to another?
Collectors use several visual and mechanical distinctions to describe 5512s. These labels help orient a comparison; they are not a substitute for examining a particular watch. Transitions overlap, and collector references’ serial-date conventions are estimates, not factory production records.

How to assess the story of an individual watch
A vintage watch’s story is strongest when the physical evidence and its paperwork agree. An unusual dial, bezel insert or bracelet may be original, replaced, or fitted during service; auction and dealer examples document watches with later components. A photograph or attractive anecdote cannot settle that question on its own.

- Check the case: assess the crown guards and overall shape together, looking for signs that polishing has softened the original edges.
- Compare the dial and hands: note the finish, text, depth notation and luminous material, then consider whether the components make sense together. A visual match is evidence to investigate, not proof.
- Inspect the movement: have a qualified specialist check the movement and whether its configuration corresponds with the watch’s other evidence.
- Review service and component history: ask which parts were replaced and when, including the bezel insert, hands and bracelet. A documented service replacement is different from an unsupported claim that a part is factory-original.
- Weigh provenance carefully: contemporaneous records, service documents and a coherent component history carry more weight than an unverified ownership story.
The available reference histories can help frame questions, but they do not authenticate a specific 5512 or establish its current value. For an actual watch, an in-person examination and its own documentation matter.

Rolex’s timeline associates Submariners with Sean Connery in the first James Bond film and with Steve McQueen in The Towering Inferno (1974). The cited timeline does not identify those watches as reference 5512. Those anecdotes therefore cannot establish a connection between either figure and a particular 5512 without reference-specific evidence.

The same caution applies to any “watch with stories to tell”: the reference has a documented place in Submariner history, while an individual watch’s ownership and service story must be demonstrated separately.
