A tariff headline is not enough to tell you what an imported watch will cost. For a U.S. buyer, the duty depends on the watch’s customs origin, its exact tariff classification, the rules in effect when it enters the country, and any applicable exemption. The Swiss government’s guidance reviewed on October 7, 2026 describes an additional U.S. tariff on Swiss imports of up to 12.5%, offset by the existing most-favoured-nation duty—not a universal 12.5% charge on every Swiss watch.
Why a tariff headline cannot tell you a watch’s final cost
Tariff rates attach to goods under specific customs rules; they do not automatically follow a brand name, a seller’s location, or the country printed on a shipping label. To estimate duty on a particular watch, you need at least its customs origin, its classification in the U.S. tariff schedule, the date of entry, and whether an exemption applies.
That is why two watches described casually as “Swiss watches” may not necessarily receive identical treatment. Their construction and included components can affect classification, while the applicable rules can change over time. A rate reported for one watch or at one moment is not a safe substitute for checking the exact item and entry date.
What the current Swiss-to-U.S. tariff guidance says
As described by Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) on October 7, 2026, the U.S. introduced additional Section 301 tariffs on July 24, 2026, following an investigation relating to goods produced using forced labour. For Swiss imports, SECO describes a variable additional tariff of up to 12.5%, with the existing most-favoured-nation (MFN) duty credited against that amount. SECO’s Switzerland–U.S. trade relations guidance also notes that many product categories are exempt, existing sector-specific measures remain, and the described Section 301 amount does not stack cumulatively with the specified Section 232 measures. Negotiations between Switzerland and the U.S. continue.

- Blue Dial Style: Blue dial and silver-tone 38mm case pair with an adjustable brown crocodile-grain leather strap for daily wear
- Adjustable Leather Strap: A 20mm genuine leather band fits up to an 8-inch wrist circumference for secure, comfortable everyday wear

- Built to Last: A Timex watch is designed for durability and everyday reliability; every piece reflects our commitment to quality without compromise
The arithmetic in SECO’s explanation is conditional: if a product’s MFN duty is 5%, the additional amount is 7.5%; if its MFN duty is already 12.5% or higher, the MFN duty applies without an additional Section 301 amount under this framework. This is not a watch-specific rate. The actual result depends on the item’s classification and applicable exemptions and rules on its entry date.
Do not use the 39% Swiss tariff cited in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) ruling NY N353615 as a current rate. That ruling, issued September 24, 2025, said its rates were current as of issuance and subject to change; SECO’s later 2026 guidance describes subsequent changes. The ruling remains useful for its product-classification example, not as a present-day tariff quote.
How to identify the details that drive the duty
1. Establish the watch’s customs origin
The country a seller ships from is not necessarily the watch’s customs origin. A watch shipped from a U.S. retailer’s warehouse, or routed through another country, does not become a product of that country for customs purposes simply because it was shipped there. Ask the seller for the origin information it will use on the customs paperwork, and seek an authoritative determination if the answer is unclear.

CBP ruling NY N353615 discusses country-of-origin marking for the particular watch before it. Its treatment refers to manufacture of the watch movement in the described legal context; it should not be applied as a universal origin test for every watch. The facts and governing rules matter.

2. Confirm the tariff classification
The U.S. International Trade Commission’s Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) is the official U.S. tariff schedule. Its live schedule and the correct classification are needed for an article-specific calculation; the available guidance does not establish one universal duty rate for wristwatches. Watch features and included components can matter, so a generic search result for “watch tariff” is not a binding answer.
NY N353615 illustrates why details matter. CBP considered a specific 1974 Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse: a manual-wind analog watch with 18 jewels, a 14-karat yellow-gold case, and a calfskin strap. It assigned a tariff heading to the watch and a separate heading to the strap, explaining that the strap treatment followed the facts and the applicable chapter note. That is an example of classification analysis—not a ruling on every watch with a leather strap or precious-metal case.

3. Check the rules and exemptions for the entry date
Once you have an origin and a likely classification, check the live HTS and current U.S. rules for the expected date the watch will enter the country. Verify the MFN duty, any additional tariff, and any exemption that could apply. A tariff article or old customs ruling may describe an earlier legal snapshot rather than the rules in effect for your purchase.
SECO says binding information on U.S. import rules and tariffs is the responsibility of the relevant U.S. authorities. For a decision with financial or legal consequences, consult CBP or a qualified customs professional rather than treating a seller’s estimate or an online calculator as definitive.

Before comparing an imported watch with a domestic offer, build a delivered-cost estimate. The customs materials do not calculate charges for an individual purchase, and the amount a carrier collects depends on the shipment and its terms. Ask the seller for a written breakdown where possible.

- Watch price: The item’s price, including any discount and the currency in which you will pay.
- Shipping and insurance: Confirm whether these are included in the advertised price or charged separately.
- Customs duty and other applicable taxes: Ask what tariff classification, origin, and rate the seller assumes, and whether any additional charges are included.
- Carrier, brokerage, or handling charges: Confirm whether the courier or postal service may collect fees from you and when payment is due.
- Seller’s delivery terms: Establish who is responsible for import charges and who will act as importer of record. Do not assume that “free shipping” means duties and fees are covered.
- Returns and warranty: Compare the seller’s return process, possible costs of sending the watch back, warranty coverage, and access to service. These are purchase terms to verify with the seller, not tariff rules.
Ask the seller to explain what happens if customs assesses a different amount from its estimate. If the seller cannot say who pays, what paperwork it will provide, or how a reassessment affects returns, treat the quoted price as incomplete until those points are resolved.

A lower sticker price does not necessarily mean a lower total cost. Put the offers side by side using the same assumptions, and record which amounts are confirmed versus estimated.
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Delivered price | Watch price, shipping, insurance, applicable duty and taxes, and carrier or brokerage charges. |
| Customs details | Country of origin, classification used for the shipment, importer of record, and who pays any assessed charges. |
| Warranty and service | Who provides coverage, where service is available, and whether the seller’s terms differ from the domestic alternative. |
| Returns and seller reliability | Return window, return-shipping responsibility, refund treatment for import charges, and confidence in the seller. |
For a real comparison, ask both sellers for their written terms. The customs rules can help explain import charges, but they do not establish a particular seller’s warranty, service access, return policy, or reliability.

Questions to settle before ordering
- What country of origin will appear on the customs declaration, and what supports that origin?
- What tariff classification will the seller use for the watch and any separately classified components?
- What MFN duty, additional tariff, and exemption does the estimate assume for the expected entry date?
- Who is the importer of record, and who pays duty, taxes, brokerage, and carrier fees?
- Can the seller provide the shipping terms and a written estimate of charges, and what happens if customs assesses more?
- What are the warranty, service, and return terms if the final delivered cost or import assessment differs from the expectation?
Where to verify the rules
Use the live U.S. International Trade Commission HTS to check tariff provisions once the product classification is known. For questions about a binding U.S. answer, consult U.S. Customs and Border Protection or a qualified customs professional; SECO directs users to the relevant U.S. authorities for binding information.
If you are checking Swiss customs information rather than estimating U.S. import duty, Switzerland’s Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) provides the Tares tariff tool. It lets users select a date, origin or destination country, import or export direction, tariff heading, and statistical key to view possible rates, taxes, fees, licensing, and related information. FOCBS cautions that Tares does not cover customs procedures such as declarations, gifts, household effects, or required documents.
