The current AVI-8 Spitfire Type 300 Automatic Pilot Panel, reference AV-4147-33, is a 42 mm, 14 mm-thick automatic watch with a 50 mm lug-to-lug, layered aviation-inspired dial and a listed U.S. price of $400. Its dimensions and decorative dial point to a watch with noticeable wrist presence rather than a compact, instantly legible traditional pilot watch. The specifications below describe the current model; the cited hands-on impressions are from reviews of an earlier Type 300 generation, not this reference.
What the current AVI-8 Spitfire Type 300 offers
AVI-8 lists the cream-dial Pilot Panel as reference AV-4147-33. The manufacturer describes its design as inspired by a Spitfire pilot panel, with applied indices, small seconds and an exhibition caseback featuring a bespoke rotor. The official page presents the model as an update with stronger materials and enhanced lume; those are manufacturer claims, not independently verified comparisons.

How does it wear, especially on a smaller wrist?
The current watch’s 42 mm diameter and 50 mm lug-to-lug are the most useful fit clues. A 50 mm span can extend noticeably across a smaller wrist, while the 14 mm thickness and listed 160 g weight suggest a substantial watch rather than a discreet, lightweight one. Fit also depends on wrist shape, bracelet adjustment and personal preference; these dimensions cannot establish how the current model will sit on any particular wrist.

Earlier-generation reviews offer context, but not a fit verdict for AV-4147-33. In a March 2020 Fratello review, Rob Nudds said the previous Type 300 wore large on his 6.5-inch wrist; that version measured 42 mm across, 13.6 mm thick and 51 mm lug-to-lug. In a June 2020 Worn & Wound review, Ed Jelley described the earlier 42 mm watch as having substantial wrist presence. The current listing instead gives 14 mm thickness and 50 mm lug-to-lug. If fit is a concern, try this exact reference on or compare its 50 mm lug-to-lug and bracelet length with a watch you already wear comfortably.
For the earlier model, Nudds praised the case execution and wrote, “I would happily pick one of these babies up for the retail price…” That was his opinion of the earlier-generation watch, not a current-model endorsement. Read his Fratello review for the original context.

Is the dial easy to read?
The Type 300’s appeal is also its trade-off: a layered, instrument-panel-style display offers more visual detail than a conventional pilot dial, but can take longer to parse at a glance. Jelley found the earlier-generation dial visually fun and its aviation cues engaging, while judging it less immediately legible than a conventional pilot watch. He also found that its large hands and lume were easy to read. These are observations about the 2020 sample, not a real-world legibility test of the current Pilot Panel.
For the current model, AVI-8 lists applied indices and Swiss Super-LumiNova, and says the update has enhanced lume. The listing does not establish how bright or long-lasting the lume is in use, or how quickly the layered dial reads in different lighting. Choose it for the instrument-inspired design if you enjoy looking at dial detail; if fast, uncluttered time checks are your priority, a simpler dial may suit you better.

What 5 ATM water resistance means for daily use
AVI-8 lists the AV-4147-33 at 5 ATM. Treat that rating as a specification, not proof that this particular watch has been independently tested for your intended water activity. The available information does not establish suitability for swimming, diving or other specific use. If regular water exposure matters, check AVI-8’s guidance for this reference before relying on it.

The current product page identifies a Japanese automatic movement with two hands and small seconds, but does not name its caliber or state a power reserve. Worn & Wound identified a Miyota 8218 in its 2020 review of an earlier Type 300. That older reference does not confirm the movement inside the current AV-4147-33, so the Miyota caliber and any associated performance figures should not be attributed to this model without confirmation.

Likewise, the earlier watch’s 13.6 mm thickness and 51 mm lug-to-lug are not the current specifications. AVI-8 lists the current Pilot Panel at 14.0 mm thick and 50.0 mm lug-to-lug. The current page provides no independent accuracy, reliability, power-reserve or movement-finishing results.
Is the AVI-8 Spitfire Type 300 worth buying?
At AVI-8’s listed $400 price, the AV-4147-33 is most compelling for someone who wants a prominent aviation-inspired design, a sapphire crystal, a steel bracelet and an automatic movement, and who is comfortable with a 42 mm case and a layered dial. It is a less obvious choice if your priorities are a compact fit, immediate glance legibility, a specifically documented movement caliber or a published power-reserve figure.
