Android Headlines named the Google Pixel Watch 3 its editorial “Best Smartwatch 2024” on December 12, 2024. Author Justin Diaz credited the watch’s new 45mm option, improved endurance, brighter display, Wear OS 5 software, smooth everyday performance and faster charging. This was an editors’ award, not a universal industry title or a current 2026 buying verdict.
Why Android Headlines chose the Pixel Watch 3
The award article’s central argument was practical: Google fixed two persistent Pixel Watch weaknesses without abandoning the product’s distinctive rounded design. Earlier generations offered only a relatively compact case and were criticized for limited battery endurance. Pixel Watch 3 added a larger model, made the screen brighter and more useful, improved charging and delivered what Diaz described as smooth daily performance.
That is an editorial judgment about the total experience, not a published laboratory ranking. The article does not disclose a scoring rubric, a complete finalist list, standardized battery or GPS tests, heart-rate accuracy data, or weighted comparisons with Samsung, Apple, Garmin and other brands.
The 45mm case changed the lineup
Pixel Watch 3 is available in 41mm and 45mm cases. The larger version gives users more screen area and a larger battery, while the 41mm model preserves the compact format that suits smaller wrists. Google lists the following fit ranges:

| Model and band | Approximate wrist range | Weight without band | Typical battery |
|---|---|---|---|
| 41mm, small band | 130–175mm | 31g | 307mAh |
| 41mm, large band | 165–210mm | 31g | 307mAh |
| 45mm, small band | 150–185mm | 37g | 420mAh |
| 45mm, large band | 165–215mm | 37g | 420mAh |
These specifications come from Google’s technical documentation. The 45mm option also made Pixel Watch more credible against large Samsung and other full-size Android watches. Choose 41mm for lower weight and a smaller visual footprint; choose 45mm if readability, battery capacity and a larger watch face matter more.
Battery life improved, but “days” needs context
Android Headlines considered endurance better than the Pixel Watch 2 and said the watch could last for days depending on use. Google’s official rating is more specific: up to 24 hours with the always-on display enabled, or up to 36 hours in Battery Saver mode. Those are “up to” figures, not a guarantee of several days in normal use.
Rank #2

- Body Battery energy monitoring helps you understand when you’re charged up or need to rest, with even more personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Get a sleep score and personalized sleep coaching for how much sleep you need — and get tips on how to improve plus key metrics such as HRV status to better understand your health (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Find new ways to keep your body moving with more than 30 built-in indoor and GPS sports apps, including walking, running, cycling, HIIT, swimming, golf and more
- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
Google’s charging estimates are approximately:
| Charge level | 41mm | 45mm |
|---|---|---|
| 50% | 24 minutes | 28 minutes |
| 80% | 35 minutes | 50 minutes |
| 100% | 60 minutes | 80 minutes |
Figures are based on Google’s specified charging conditions and the supplied USB-C fast-charging cable; a power adapter is not included. LTE use, GPS workouts, high brightness, continuous tracking, notifications and weak cellular signal can reduce runtime. Google’s battery guidance is available at this support page. Battery Saver also changes the experience, so it should not be treated as equivalent to a full-featured normal-use day.
A brighter, larger display
The Pixel Watch 3 uses an AMOLED LTPO panel with 320 pixels per inch, DCI-P3 color, always-on support and a variable 1–60Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness is up to 2,000 nits, and the cover is custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The 45mm case turns those display improvements into a visibly larger viewing area while retaining the rounded styling that distinguishes Pixel Watch.

Brightness and peak specifications do not by themselves establish outdoor readability in every condition, but they explain why the display was a major part of the award rationale.
Wear OS 5 and the Google ecosystem
Pixel Watch 3 launched with Wear OS 5.0 and includes 32GB of eMMC storage, 2GB of SDRAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor with a Cortex-M33 coprocessor. Its strongest case is ecosystem integration: Pixel phones, Google Maps, Google Wallet, Google Assistant, Fitbit services and Wear OS applications work together in one device.

Compatibility is narrower than the phrase “Android smartwatch” suggests. Google requires the Pixel Watch app, a Google Account and a compatible phone running Android 10 or newer. iPhones are not supported. LTE operation depends on country, model and carrier. Check Google’s current compatibility and availability guidance before buying.
Health and fitness hardware
Google lists a multi-path optical heart-rate sensor, ECG-compatible electrical sensors, red and infrared oxygen-saturation sensors, a skin-temperature sensor, a cEDA body-response sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, altimeter, barometer, compass, magnetometer and GPS.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How it fit against alternatives
| Alternative | Where it may be stronger | Why Pixel Watch 3 may still appeal |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra | Larger, rugged design and strong Samsung-oriented features; it won Android Headlines’ reader-choice smartwatch award for 2024. | Pixel’s rounded design, 41mm option, Google services and Fitbit integration. |
| Apple Watch | Best fit for iPhone owners and Apple’s ecosystem. | Not an option for Android users; Pixel Watch is Android-only. |
| Garmin watches | Generally better suited to long endurance, navigation and advanced training metrics. | Wear OS apps, Google services and a more general-purpose smartwatch experience. |
| Other Wear OS watches | May offer different prices, designs or endurance characteristics. | Pixel integration, Fitbit features and the choice of two case sizes. |
These are qualitative positioning differences, not standardized head-to-head test results.
Editors’ award versus readers’ award
Android Headlines’ editorial award went to the Pixel Watch 3. Its separate reader-choice coverage named the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra the readers’ Best Smartwatch of 2024. The two results reflect different selection processes and are not contradictory. The distinction is documented in the site’s awards index.
Who the Pixel Watch 3 suited in 2024
Good fit
- Android users wanting Google services, Wear OS apps and Fitbit integration.
- Pixel-phone owners seeking the most tightly integrated Google watch.
- Buyers who value a choice between compact 41mm and larger 45mm cases.
- Users who prioritize display quality and quick top-ups over multi-day endurance.
Poor fit
- iPhone owners, because pairing is unsupported.
- Endurance athletes who need multi-day or multi-week battery life.
- Buyers who reject subscription-dependent Fitbit features.
- People needing a rugged traditional watch design or the newest Google generation.
- LTE buyers whose carrier or region is unsupported.
Does the 2024 award still matter?
It remains useful as a record of what made Pixel Watch 3 compelling at launch: Google solved the size limitation, improved practical endurance, added a brighter display and kept the software and design coherent. It does not establish that the watch is the best purchase in 2026. Reassess current-generation alternatives, live pricing, stock, warranty, refurbished condition, LTE support and recurring cellular or Fitbit costs before buying.

For current shoppers, the Pixel Watch 3 makes the most sense when its price is meaningfully below newer models and its Android-only ecosystem, one-day normal-use battery class and subscription considerations are acceptable.
