Check your model first, then use the instructions below to set up Adaptive Audio, Live Translation, Live Listen, or Spatial Audio where supported.
Apple’s current compatibility lists include newer models such as AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3, AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, and AirPods Max 2 for several newer features. Not every model supports every feature, so do not rely on a general product name alone.
Check which AirPods you have
Connect your AirPods to an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, and tap the More Info control beside the AirPods. Check the model name in the device information. Apple’s model lists are feature-specific; a model’s support for Spatial Audio, for example, does not establish that it supports Adaptive Audio or Live Translation.

Prepare and start a translation
- Connect and wear the AirPods with the compatible iPhone.
- In Settings, open the AirPods controls and choose Live Translation.
- Download the language spoken by the other person and the language you want to hear.
- Open the Translate app, tap Live, and select the languages.
- Start translation in Translate, with Siri, using a configured iPhone Action button, or with a supported AirPods control.
The translation plays through the AirPods. In the iPhone’s Live view, you can see a transcript or play your translated response aloud. Use Live Listen as a remote microphone
Live Listen lets an iPhone or iPad microphone pick up sound and send it to connected AirPods. It may help in some listening situations, such as a conversation in a noisy environment; it is not a guarantee that every sound will be clearer.
- Connect your AirPods to an iPhone or iPad.
- Open Control Center and tap Hearing Devices.
- Tap Live Listen.
- Place the iPhone or iPad near the sound source and listen through your AirPods.
If Hearing Devices is missing, add the Hearing control through Control Center’s Add a Control menu.

Set up Spatial Audio and head tracking
Spatial Audio and head tracking work with supported AirPods and compatible shows, movies, songs, games, or FaceTime. Personalized Spatial Audio creates a profile that can sync across supported Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Connect and wear your AirPods with an iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings and tap your AirPods.
- Look beneath Spatial Audio for its controls. If needed, open Audio & Routing first.
- Follow the setup instructions to create a Personalized Spatial Audio profile, if you want one.
- Try the setting with supported content and adjust it to your preference.
Spatial Audio depends on the AirPods, device, app, and content. A profile can be created on iPhone X or later, according to Apple. Not every track, show, or game supports the feature, and the effect is a matter of listening preference.
