AirPods 4 are not hearing aids. Apple’s Hearing Aid feature is attached to AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3—not the standard AirPods 4 or AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. The difference is easy to miss because AirPods 4 include sophisticated audio, microphone, and noise-control features, but those do not create a personalized hearing-assistance profile.
Short answer: AirPods 4 are not Apple’s hearing-aid-capable AirPods. They are everyday open-ear earbuds, available with or without Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Apple’s Hearing Aid feature is currently supported on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3, subject to age, software, firmware, and regional requirements. If hearing assistance is the reason you are shopping, do not buy AirPods 4 expecting to unlock that feature later.
This guide separates the two products clearly. It explains what AirPods 4 actually offer, how Apple’s Hearing Aid workflow works on compatible AirPods Pro models, and which model makes sense for different priorities. No physical listening, battery, fit, call-quality, ANC, or hearing-assistance testing was performed for this article, so the performance claims below are based on Apple’s specifications and support documentation rather than invented firsthand results.
AirPods 4 and the AirPods Pro Hearing Aid feature are different things
Apple’s current documentation lists the Hearing Aid feature for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 with the required software and firmware. The AirPods 4 technical specifications list audio, calling, noise-control, and accessibility features, but do not list Hearing Aid support. That means neither the standard AirPods 4 nor AirPods 4 with ANC should be described as over-the-counter hearing aids.
#1 Best Overall
- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation help reduce outside noise before it reaches your ears, so you can immerse yourself in what you’re listening to.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*
- MAGICAL EXPERIENCE — Just say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to play a song, make a call, or check your schedule.* And with Siri Interactions, now you can respond to Siri by simply nodding your head yes or shaking your head no.* Pair AirPods 4 by simply placing them near your device and tapping Connect on your screen.* Easily share a song or show between two sets of AirPods.* An optical in-ear sensor knows to play audio only when you’re wearing AirPods and pauses when you take them off. And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
The distinction matters because the products use different designs and serve different purposes:
- AirPods 4: open-ear earbuds for music, calls, Siri, and—on the ANC model—noise control and environmental-awareness features.
- AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3: in-ear earbuds that support Apple’s Hearing Test and Hearing Aid feature for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss, where the feature is available.
Apple describes the Hearing Aid feature as clinical-grade assistance, but it is not a universal replacement for a hearing-care evaluation. It is intended for a defined group of users and remains subject to local regulatory availability. See Apple’s current Hearing Health Features guide before buying.
What AirPods 4 include
Apple introduced AirPods 4 in 2024 in two configurations: a standard version and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. Both use Apple’s H2 headphone chip and share the same basic open-ear form factor.
Apple lists the following hardware and audio features for both versions:
- A custom high-excursion driver
- A high-dynamic-range amplifier
- Adaptive EQ
- Voice Isolation
- Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking
- Beamforming microphones
- An inward-facing microphone
- An optical in-ear sensor
- Motion- and speech-detecting accelerometers
- A force sensor for controls
- IP54-rated resistance to dust, sweat, and water under controlled laboratory conditions
These are substantial everyday-earbud features, but none turns AirPods 4 into a hearing aid. Adaptive EQ, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, and Voice Isolation may make listening or conversations more convenient; they do not establish a personalized hearing-loss amplification profile.
Standard AirPods 4 versus AirPods 4 with ANC
| Feature | AirPods 4 | AirPods 4 with ANC |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Open-ear design | Open-ear design |
| Chip and core audio hardware | Apple H2, custom high-excursion driver, high-dynamic-range amplifier | Apple H2, custom high-excursion driver, high-dynamic-range amplifier |
| Active Noise Cancellation | No | Yes |
| Transparency mode | No ANC model features listed | Yes |
| Adaptive Audio | No | Yes |
| Conversation Awareness | No | Yes |
| Listening time per charge | Up to 5 hours | Up to 4 hours with ANC enabled; up to 5 hours with noise control off |
| Total listening time with case | Up to 30 hours | Up to 20 hours with ANC enabled; up to 30 hours with noise control off |
| Case charging | USB-C | USB-C, Qi-certified wireless charging, and Apple Watch charging |
| Find My case speaker | Not listed for the standard case | Included |
| Hearing Aid feature | No | No |
Battery figures are Apple’s “up to” claims and vary with settings, volume, environmental conditions, and usage. The ANC model’s case has more charging options and a Find My-related speaker, while the standard model is the simpler choice if you do not need noise cancellation.

For readers specifically comparing the two AirPods 4 versions, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are the more capable option for travel, commuting, and conversations in changing environments. That recommendation is about ANC and convenience—not hearing-aid functionality. Availability and pricing should be checked at the retailer before purchase.
What the ANC model can—and cannot—do for conversations
AirPods 4 with ANC add three features that can change how the earbuds behave around other people:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Active Noise Cancellation reduces surrounding sound.
- Transparency mode allows environmental sound through.
- Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness automatically adjust the listening experience when conditions or conversation change.
These controls can help someone manage background noise or avoid repeatedly removing an earbud. They should not be confused with the Hearing Aid feature. Noise cancellation changes the surrounding sound field; a hearing-aid profile uses hearing-test or audiogram information to personalize amplification and related controls for a qualifying user.
AirPods 4’s open-ear fit is also a buying consideration. It may appeal to people who dislike sealed ear tips or want a less occluding design, but fit and sound perception vary by ear shape. The open design does not provide the same physical seal as AirPods Pro, and it is not a substitute for the in-ear hardware required by Apple’s Hearing Aid implementation.
How Apple’s Hearing Aid feature works on AirPods Pro
On compatible AirPods Pro, Apple combines a hearing assessment with adjustable controls. Users can either take the Apple Hearing Test on a compatible iPhone or iPad or import an audiogram supplied by a hearing healthcare professional.
The Hearing Aid feature is intended for people aged 18 or older with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Depending on the result and the available feature version, the settings can adjust:

Apple also documents Media Assist, which applies hearing-based adjustments to supported media and communications, including music, video, phone calls, and FaceTime. The precise options and availability depend on the device, software, firmware, and region.
Apple Hearing Test: what to expect
Apple says its Hearing Test takes approximately five minutes and should be completed in a quiet room. The result includes a hearing-loss classification and recommended next steps. Apple also allows the user to export a PDF audiogram for a hearing professional.
That makes the test useful for screening and personalization, but it should not be presented as a complete medical diagnosis. A result that suggests significant hearing loss, an unusual change in hearing, or a condition outside the feature’s intended range is a reason to seek professional care rather than simply increasing AirPods settings.
The alternative is to add an audiogram from a professional. This can be preferable when the user already has a recent, reliable hearing evaluation or wants a hearing-care professional involved in the process.

The general setup path documented by Apple is:
- Connect compatible AirPods Pro to an iPhone or iPad.
- Open the AirPods settings on that device.
- Select Hearing Assistance.
- Choose an Apple Hearing Test result or add a professional audiogram.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to turn on Hearing Aid.
- Adjust the available amplification, balance, tone, and related controls as appropriate.
Apple says the latest configuration is stored on the AirPods. As a result, the most recent setup can continue operating when the paired iPhone or iPad is not nearby. The AirPods still need to remain charged, and the initial setup and changes require the compatible Apple device.
If the Hearing Assistance option does not appear, check the basics before assuming the feature is broken:

Apple maintains a separate list of regional and feature-version considerations in its Hearing Health Features availability documentation. Availability can change as regulatory approvals and software support differ between markets.
U.S. regulatory context
In September 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized Apple’s Hearing Aid Feature as the first over-the-counter hearing-aid software device. The FDA described it as software-only, customized through an iOS device, and intended for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing impairment.
The FDA’s announcement reported a clinical study involving 118 subjects. It said that self-fitting and professional fitting of the same device produced similar perceived benefit, with comparable amplification and speech-in-noise results in that study. Those findings support describing the regulatory status and published study result; they do not predict how every individual will hear, and they are not a substitute for a personal evaluation.
FDA authorization is also not a worldwide availability guarantee. Apple warns that Hearing Aid, Hearing Test, and Hearing Protection are not available in every country or region. U.S. readers should still verify availability on their own device and in their location.

Keep the earbuds and microphones clean
Apple says debris or earwax can affect device performance and noise-control features. Cleaning is therefore relevant to both AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro, particularly when microphones or acoustic openings appear obstructed. Follow Apple’s cleaning instructions rather than inserting sharp objects or soaking the earbuds.
IP54 is not waterproofing
Both AirPods 4 versions are rated IP54 under controlled laboratory conditions. Apple says resistance can decrease with normal wear. Do not swim or shower with them, and do not charge wet AirPods or a wet charging case. Dry them fully before placing them in the case or connecting a charger.

Hearing Protection has limits
Apple says Hearing Protection is not intended for extremely loud impulse sounds such as gunfire, fireworks, or jackhammers, or for sustained sounds above 110 dBA. Noise-control features and hearing-protection settings should not be treated as permission to remain near hazardous sound without appropriate protection.
Accessories cannot turn AirPods 4 into hearing aids
Replacement ear tips may matter for AirPods Pro fit and for a consistent Hearing Test workflow, but they do not add Hearing Aid support to AirPods 4. If you use compatible AirPods Pro and need replacement fit components, AirPods Pro replacement ear tips are an accessory consideration, not a medical upgrade or guarantee of improved hearing results.
Which model should you buy?
| Your priority | Best match | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open-ear comfort and straightforward Apple earbuds | Standard AirPods 4 | They provide the open-ear design, H2-based features, calling, and up to 5 hours of listening per charge without paying for ANC you do not need. |
| Open-ear design plus ANC and automatic conversation handling | AirPods 4 with ANC | They add ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and a more versatile charging case. |
| Apple’s Hearing Aid feature is the main requirement | AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3 | These are the models Apple documents as supporting Hearing Aid, provided the age, software, firmware, hearing-loss, and regional requirements are met. |
| You are unsure whether you have hearing loss | Start with a hearing screening or professional evaluation | AirPods settings should not be used to diagnose an unexplained hearing problem or sudden hearing change. |
The central buying rule is simple: choose AirPods 4 for the open-ear earbud experience, with the ANC version if you want noise control. Choose AirPods Pro 2 or Pro 3 if you specifically need Apple’s Hearing Aid workflow. Do not select AirPods 4 on the assumption that a software update will add Hearing Aid later.
What a genuine hands-on review should test
A proper hands-on comparison would need to document testing rather than infer results from specifications. Useful test areas include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Comfort and stability during extended wear
- Whether the open-ear AirPods 4 fit remains secure for the individual wearer
- Perceived isolation and environmental awareness with ANC, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio
- Call performance in quiet and noisy locations
- Charging-case portability and ease of use
- Battery endurance under a declared playback volume, codec, and noise-control protocol
- Hearing Aid setup time on a compatible AirPods Pro model
- Speech intelligibility in one-to-one conversation
- Whether the Hearing Aid controls are understandable to a first-time user
Even after those tests, a reviewer should avoid making medical conclusions or generalizing one person’s hearing result to everyone. Comfort, perceived loudness, speech clarity, and benefit from amplification are individual outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Apple’s current documentation identifies AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 as the models supporting the Hearing Aid feature. AirPods 4 may offer noise control and accessibility features, but they are not Apple Hearing Aid devices.
Do AirPods 4 work as hearing aids?
Apple currently lists AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 with the required firmware and software. The feature is intended for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss and is not available in every country or region.
Which AirPods support Apple’s Hearing Aid feature?
AirPods 4 with ANC can provide ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Awareness, which may help manage environmental sound. Those functions are not the same as personalized hearing-loss amplification.
Can AirPods 4 help with hearing conversations?
No. Apple describes it as a hearing test for screening and personalization. Results can provide a classification and recommended next steps, but unexplained, sudden, or concerning hearing changes should be assessed by a hearing professional.
Is Apple’s Hearing Test a medical diagnosis?
The Bottom Line
AirPods 4 are open-ear earbuds, not hearing aids. Buy standard AirPods 4 for the simplest open-ear Apple experience, AirPods 4 with ANC for noise control and conversation features, and AirPods Pro 2 or Pro 3 only when Apple’s Hearing Aid feature is the deciding requirement. Confirm current regional availability and consult a hearing professional for unexplained, sudden, or more substantial hearing problems.
