AirPods Pro 3 are most compelling for AirPods Pro 2 owners who want stronger noise cancellation, longer listening per earbud charge, or workout heart-rate sensing—and who find the redesigned fit comfortable. Owners who are happy with their Pro 2 fit and want more total listening time from the charging case can reasonably wait.
Apple claims the Pro 3 remove up to twice as much noise as the previous-generation Pro, while its stated battery figures show a tradeoff: more listening time per earbud charge, but less total listening time with the case. Neither the fit nor the sound is a guaranteed improvement for every listener, so the decision should depend on your needs and experience.

Tom’s Guide reported that extended use highlighted the Pro 3’s noise-control advantage over Pro 2, while also noting drawbacks and limits to its recommendation. 9to5Mac’s Ryan Christoffel said the redesigned fit initially felt worse to him, but his view changed with more use. RTINGS notes that listeners who prefer earbuds that sit less deeply may prefer Pro 2.

Why Pro 3 may be worth the upgrade
Noise cancellation is the clearest reason
Apple’s September 2025 announcement claims that AirPods Pro 3 remove up to twice as much noise as the previous-generation AirPods Pro. That is a manufacturer claim, not a universal independent measurement. Reviewers have also described stronger noise cancellation in their own comparisons. The improvement may matter most if you often listen on commutes, flights, or in noisy work settings; it is less compelling if Pro 2 already block enough sound for you.
More listening time per earbud charge, less total time with the case
Apple rates Pro 3 for up to 8 hours of listening with ANC enabled on one charge, compared with up to 6 hours for Pro 2. Apple’s stated total with the charging case is lower for Pro 3: up to 24 hours versus up to 30 hours for Pro 2. These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed real-world results. The redesigned fit is personal
Pro 3 have a redesigned fit and tips, but comfort is not a guaranteed upgrade. 9to5Mac’s reviewer described an initially difficult adjustment that improved with more use, while RTINGS notes that people who prefer a less-deep fit may prefer Pro 2. These are reviewer observations, not rules for every ear.
Pay attention to both seal and comfort: an earbud that stays in place but causes pressure may not work for long listening sessions. If possible, try the fit over time and compare it with your Pro 2 before deciding.
Heart-rate sensing is a specific workout benefit
Pro 3 add heart-rate sensing during workouts. This is a specific reason to consider them if you want ear-based workout tracking; it is not a universal reason for Pro 2 owners to upgrade. Do not treat workout readings as a substitute for medical equipment or professional advice.

Features Pro 2 owners should not mistake for Pro 3 exclusives
Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection are listed for Pro 2 as well as Pro 3, subject to Apple’s device, software, firmware, and other conditions. They are not exclusive reasons for a Pro 2 owner to upgrade. Apple says Hearing Protection depends on fit and proper wear, requires charge, and is not suitable for extremely loud impulse sounds or sustained sound above 110 dBA. It is not a substitute for appropriate certified hearing protection in hazardous settings.
Who should consider AirPods Pro 3?
- Frequent commuters and travelers: Consider them if stronger noise cancellation would address a regular problem.
- People who want longer listening between earbud charges: Apple’s stated ANC listening maximum is higher per charge than Pro 2’s.
- Workout-focused listeners: Heart-rate sensing is a new, specific feature to weigh.
- Pro 2 owners who can confirm the fit works for them: Fit is subjective, so try the redesigned earbuds if possible.
