Back up your old iPhone, then set up the new one from its most recent backup and follow the Apple Watch transfer prompt. If no prompt appears, open the Watch app on the new iPhone with the unlocked watch nearby and follow the setup flow. If the old iPhone is unavailable, erase the watch, pair it again, and restore the latest available watch backup.
Apple says that backing up an iPhone also backs up its paired Apple Watch. See Apple’s transfer instructions and Apple Watch backup guide.
Before you start
- Have the Apple Account and password used with the watch, plus the watch passcode.
- Connect both iPhones to Wi-Fi. Keep the watch and new iPhone at least 50% charged.
- Update the old iPhone and Apple Watch to the newest versions available before beginning.
- Keep the watch unlocked, on your wrist, and close to the new iPhone during setup.
Back up the old iPhone
Choose either iCloud or a computer backup. Apple says the paired iPhone backs up Apple Watch data; Health and Activity information requires Health syncing through iCloud or an encrypted computer backup.

Use the most recent available backup when setting up the new iPhone. Do not erase or trade in the old iPhone until you have confirmed the new phone and watch have the information you need.

How do I pair my Apple Watch with a new iPhone?
- Turn on the new iPhone and begin setup.
- Restore it from the most recent iCloud or computer backup.
- If asked whether to use your existing Apple Watch, tap Continue.
- Keep the unlocked watch on your wrist and close to the iPhone, then follow the onscreen prompts.
If no transfer prompt appears, open the Watch app on the new iPhone with the unlocked watch nearby and follow the setup flow. Interface wording can vary by software version or region.
Do I need to unpair my Apple Watch before switching phones?
Not always. If the transfer prompt appears, follow it. If the Watch app shows Start Pairing, Apple advises unpairing the watch and setting it up again. If pairing was interrupted and the watch shows Pairing Not Complete, open Watch > My Watch > All Watches, keep the watch unlocked on your wrist, and tap Finish Pairing.
If you still have the old iPhone
- Keep the old iPhone and watch close together.
- Open the Watch app on the old iPhone and tap My Watch, then All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the watch, then tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Enter the Apple Account password if asked.
- When unpairing finishes, bring the watch near the new iPhone, open the Watch app, and follow the prompts.
- Choose Restore from Backup when a watch backup is offered.
Unpairing erases the watch and creates or preserves its latest backup on the paired iPhone. Keep the old iPhone until you have checked the transfer.

What if I don’t have my old iPhone?
Erase the watch directly, then pair it with the new iPhone and try to restore the latest available watch backup. Changes made since the last backup may be lost; if no backup is available, set up the watch as new.

- On the watch, open Settings, then General.
- Tap Reset, then Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the watch passcode if requested and confirm the erase.
- Open the Watch app on the new iPhone, sign in with the Apple Account previously associated with the watch, and follow the pairing prompts.
- Choose to restore the latest available backup, if offered.
Erasing directly does not remove Activation Lock. You need the Apple Account and password previously used with the watch to reactivate it.
Will I lose my Activity or Health data?
Health and Activity data can return if Health was syncing through iCloud or the computer backup was encrypted. An unencrypted computer backup does not transfer that data. Data changed since the latest watch backup may be lost, and Apple says iCloud does not store Activity Sharing data. See Apple’s pairing troubleshooting guide for more recovery details.

Apple Watch backups can include settings and Health and Fitness data. Information that syncs separately through iCloud, such as Messages, is not part of the watch backup itself.
Troubleshooting pairing
The new iPhone does not find the watch
- Keep the unlocked watch on your wrist and close to the iPhone.
- Check that both devices are updated and the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Open the Watch app manually and follow any setup prompts.
The watch is stuck on the pairing screen
If a black screen with a white Apple logo is stuck, Apple advises holding the Digital Crown and side button until the watch restarts. Then press firmly on the display, or hold the Digital Crown and tap Reset, and try pairing again.

- Confirm Health syncing was enabled in iCloud, or that the computer backup was encrypted.
- Make sure the new iPhone uses the same Apple Account.
- Allow time for iCloud data to sync after setup.
If the old iPhone is unavailable and there is no usable backup, data not already synced or backed up may not be recoverable.

Compatibility and software versions
Apple Watch compatibility depends on the watch model and software versions. Apple’s reviewed support pages advise updating both devices but do not provide a complete compatibility matrix or universal minimum software version. If an older watch will not pair, check Apple’s current compatibility guidance rather than relying on a version claim that may have changed.
