Apple released watchOS 11.1 on October 28, 2024. It is a historical maintenance and security release, not a major feature update: Apple’s advisory covers Apple Watch Series 6 and later, and MacRumors reported a fix for breathing-disturbances data that was not being written to HealthKit for some users. Reported fix for missing Breathing Disturbances data
MacRumors reported on October 28, 2024 that Apple’s release notes included “a fix for an issue with writing breathing disturbances data to HealthKit for some users.” HealthKit is Apple’s framework for storing and sharing health data with compatible apps. The reported fix concerns data handling; it should not be treated as a medical or diagnostic upgrade.
Breathing Disturbances and sleep-apnea notifications can indicate patterns that may warrant attention, but they do not replace professional medical evaluation.

Apple’s advisory page was later updated with entries as late as January 15, 2025. That later page activity should not be confused with the original release date. What watchOS 11.1 did not add
Contemporary coverage did not identify a major new consumer feature set for watchOS 11.1. Features introduced with the main watchOS 11 release should not be credited specifically to this maintenance update. Likewise, the release’s timing alongside iOS 18.1 does not mean Apple added the full Apple Intelligence feature set to Apple Watch.
Developer release notes are separate
Apple’s developer documentation says the watchOS 11.1 SDK was bundled with Xcode 16.1 and supports apps for Apple Watch devices running watchOS 11.1. The notes list developer-facing fixes in StoreKit Testing, a SwiftUI availability-check crash, and Watch-specific WidgetKit font metrics and default font behavior. Which Apple Watches can get watchOS 11.1?
Apple’s security advisory lists Apple Watch Series 6 and later as covered devices. That advisory scope does not by itself establish current, model-specific availability or every paired-iPhone configuration. Check the Watch app and current Apple support guidance for your watch before attempting an update.
How to install watchOS 11.1
At launch, MacRumors reported that users could install through the Watch app on an iPhone running iOS 18.1. It reported that the watch needed at least 50% battery and had to be on a charger. These are release-era instructions, not confirmation of current availability or requirements.

- Tap General, then Software Update.
- If the update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the watch on its charger and meet the battery requirement shown for the update.
