The 2017 steel Chopard L.U.C XP pairs a slim, 40 mm dress-watch case with a vertically brushed silver dial, blued Arabic numerals and hands, and a blue woven cashmere strap. Its 7.2 mm profile and restrained time-only display give it a dressy foundation; the textile strap and blue accents make it less conventional. Reviewer Felix Scholz considered it suitable for daily wear by more formal dressers, though its 30 m water resistance is a clear reason not to treat it as a swimming watch.

What is the Chopard L.U.C XP?

The L.U.C XP is a thin, time-only automatic watch in Chopard’s L.U.C collection. This article concerns the steel version covered by Felix Scholz in a 2017 hands-on review, associated with reference 168592-3001 and calibre 96.53-L. It displays hours and minutes, without a date or other complications described in that review. Time+Tide’s 2017 review and the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie’s L.U.C XP record list a 40 mm case, 7.2 mm thickness and 30 m water resistance for this model.

Why does the design feel a little left field?

A dress-watch case with a textile strap

The case is slim and conventionally dressy in proportion, but the blue woven cashmere strap shifts the mood away from formal leather. Its fabric texture makes the watch feel more relaxed without changing the understated shape of the steel case.

Color and texture on a restrained dial

The silver dial has vertical brushing, with blued Arabic numerals and hands providing contrast. Arabic numerals keep the time display direct, while the blue details echo the strap. Scholz’s assessment was that the brushed surface tones down the dressiness and could make the watch a daily option for more formal types; that is a style judgment, not a durability test.

What is inside the steel L.U.C XP?

Calibre 96.53-L is an automatic movement with a tungsten micro-rotor and Chopard’s Twin two-barrel arrangement. The review and FHH model record specify a 58-hour power reserve. Time+Tide also gives the movement’s thickness as 3.3 mm, with 172 components and 27 jewels. The thin movement helps explain how the watch achieves its 7.2 mm overall case thickness.

Can you wear it every day?

For an office, dinners, and other settings where a refined watch suits the dress code, the slim profile and simple hours-and-minutes display make the steel XP a plausible daily choice. That aligns with Scholz’s view of it as a potential daily wearer for more formal dressers. It does not establish performance under hard knocks, sports use, or water exposure.

The 30 m water-resistance rating is a practical limit. It does not substantiate swimming use, and the available model record does not specify a swimming-use recommendation. Treat it as a dress watch and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance for the particular watch.

How does it compare with the current L.U.C XP Skeletec?

The name “L.U.C XP” covers distinct versions. Chopard’s US page currently lists the XP Skeletec, reference 161984-1001, which is not the 2017 steel watch: it is an 18-carat ethical-white-gold skeleton model with calibre 96.17-S. Its specifications and price should not be transferred to the steel XP.

The Skeletec details and listed US price come from Chopard’s official product page. For a like-for-like comparison, the steel XP is the quieter, textile-strapped option; the Skeletec is a precious-metal skeleton watch. The available evidence does not support ranking the steel XP against a named competitor.

What did the steel L.U.C XP cost?

Time+Tide reported an Australian launch price of A$11,890 in 2017. FHH’s technical record lists CHF 8,220 but does not show a publication date. Those are different market and date references, not a current quote or a reliable conversion between markets. No current price for the 2017 steel version is established here; condition, reference, completeness and seller can affect an individual offer.

What to verify when considering one

  • Confirm the exact variant: the steel, solid-dial watch associated with calibre 96.53-L is different from the white-gold XP Skeletec reference 161984-1001.
  • Check the movement and service history: seek documentation identifying the calibre and any completed servicing. The available 2023 Chopard instruction-manual search result is not a service record or proof of condition: Chopard L.U.C instruction manual search result.
  • Assess the actual strap: the reviewed watch used woven cashmere, but the available information does not establish strap width or compatibility with replacement straps.
  • Inspect water-resistance condition: a model rating is not a guarantee that an older individual watch remains water-resistant. Have its condition assessed rather than assuming the rating still applies.
