AirPods Pro 3 do have less total battery life than the USB-C AirPods Pro 2—but only when “total” includes the charging case. Apple rates Pro 3 for up to 24 hours with ANC and the case, versus 30 hours for Pro 2. Per earbud charge, however, Pro 3 lead 8 hours to 6.
AirPods Pro 3 have less total, case-inclusive listening time than the USB-C AirPods Pro 2—but they last longer between charges. Apple rates AirPods Pro 3 for up to 24 hours with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) when the charging case is included, compared with up to 30 hours for AirPods Pro 2 with the USB-C case. That is a six-hour, or 20%, reduction in advertised overall listening time.
The comparison changes at the earbud level. AirPods Pro 3 are rated for up to 8 hours on one charge with ANC enabled, versus up to 6 hours for AirPods Pro 2. So the newer model offers two additional hours per charge—about 33% more—while its case provides fewer total recharges.
AirPods Pro 3 vs. AirPods Pro 2 battery life
| Battery measure | AirPods Pro 3 | AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C case) |
Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening time per charge with ANC | Up to 8 hours | Up to 6 hours | Pro 3: +2 hours |
| Listening time with case and ANC | Up to 24 hours | Up to 30 hours | Pro 3: -6 hours |
| Spatial Audio and head tracking, per charge | Up to 7.5 hours | Up to 5.5 hours | Pro 3: +2 hours |
| Quick charge | About 1 hour after 5 minutes in the case | About 1 hour after 5 minutes in the case | No material difference in the headline claim |
These are Apple’s maximum advertised figures, not a guarantee of how long every user will get. Battery performance varies with volume, ANC or Transparency settings, Spatial Audio, head tracking, environmental conditions, Bluetooth use, and other factors.

What “less overall battery life” actually means
“Overall battery life” normally refers to the combined listening time supplied by the earbuds and their charging case. On that measure, AirPods Pro 3 are behind: Apple quotes 24 hours with ANC, while the USB-C AirPods Pro 2 are quoted at 30 hours.
That does not mean AirPods Pro 3 die sooner during an individual listening session. The opposite is true in Apple’s specifications. A fully charged pair of Pro 3 earbuds can play for up to eight hours with ANC, giving them a two-hour advantage over Pro 2 earbuds before they need to return to the case.
The practical trade-off is therefore:
- Long individual sessions: AirPods Pro 3 are the better specification, because they should require fewer interruptions during a single workday, flight, commute, or listening session.
- Several recharges away from an outlet: AirPods Pro 2 are the better specification, because their case-inclusive rating is six hours higher.
- Short listening sessions: The difference may be less noticeable, especially because both models claim about an hour of listening after five minutes in the case.
Why AirPods Pro 3 can last longer per charge but less with the case
Apple’s specifications establish the battery-life difference, but they do not provide a definitive engineering explanation for why AirPods Pro 3 have a higher single-charge rating and a lower case-inclusive rating. It would therefore be speculation to attribute the result to a particular battery size, case capacity, chip, or charging-system change without an Apple source confirming it.
The safe conclusion is simply that the two products have different advertised endurance profiles. Pro 3 prioritize longer earbud runtime, while Pro 2 provide more total case-supported listening time. The case-inclusive figure is not calculated by multiplying the per-charge figure by a fixed number of recharges in a way that lets consumers infer every internal battery detail; it is Apple’s product-level maximum under its stated test conditions.

Spatial Audio comparison
With Spatial Audio and head tracking enabled, AirPods Pro 3 are rated for up to 7.5 hours per charge. AirPods Pro 2 are rated for up to 5.5 hours per charge. That preserves a two-hour advantage for Pro 3, although both figures are lower than the respective ANC-only maximums.
For users who regularly listen with Spatial Audio, the Pro 3’s per-charge advantage is particularly relevant. However, the supplied specifications do not establish a case-inclusive Spatial Audio total for either model, so the comparison should not be extended beyond Apple’s published per-charge figures.
Charging, cables, and compatibility
Both generations use Bluetooth 5.3. Their charging cases support MagSafe, Apple Watch charging, Qi-certified charging, and USB-C.
There is one useful box-contents distinction. Apple lists a USB-C charging cable as sold separately for AirPods Pro 3, while the USB-C AirPods Pro 2 specification lists a cable in the box. Buyers upgrading to Pro 3 should check whether they already have a suitable USB-C cable before assuming the package includes one.

- Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
Both models can therefore use the same broad types of charging surfaces and chargers, but the cable-in-the-box difference matters if the earbuds will be used immediately while traveling. It does not change the battery-capacity comparison itself.
Which model is better for travel?
Choose based on how you use the earbuds rather than the generation number alone.
AirPods Pro 3 make more sense if you:
- Often listen for six or more hours without putting the earbuds back in the case.
- Use ANC or Spatial Audio and want the longest possible single-session runtime.
- Usually have access to a charger and value fewer interruptions during a long session.
- Are buying the current model and accept the lower total case-inclusive rating.
AirPods Pro 2 make more sense if you:
- Use the case to recharge the earbuds repeatedly during a trip.
- Spend long periods away from outlets and want the higher advertised 30-hour total.
- Already own the USB-C version and are considering an upgrade solely for battery life.
- Prefer having a charging cable listed as included with the USB-C case.
For an existing AirPods Pro 2 owner, the battery upgrade is not an across-the-board upgrade. AirPods Pro 3 improve the maximum per-charge listening claim by two hours, but switching models means giving up six hours of advertised case-inclusive endurance. The value of the change depends on which limitation you encounter in real use: earbuds running out during a session, or the case needing a recharge after multiple sessions.
How reliable are these numbers?
Apple describes the figures as maximums and notes that actual battery life depends on settings, environment, usage, and other factors. The test conditions also differ between generations:

Those different test dates and phone platforms are relevant context, although Apple presents both results as product specifications. They also mean the figures should not be treated as a controlled, independent head-to-head test. No independent testing is established here, and third-party reporting that repeats Apple’s numbers should not be presented as first-hand testing.

Apple lists AirPods Pro 3 at $249 in the United States. Price and retailer availability can change, so check the current listing before buying. If you are comparing models, make sure the Pro 2 listing is specifically the USB-C version; older Lightning-case references are not the same comparison product used for the 30-hour figure above.
If you buy Pro 3 and do not already have one, you may also need a USB-C charging cable for AirPods Pro 3, because Apple lists that cable as sold separately. Confirm the package contents and connector before ordering an accessory.
Verdict
The title is accurate only with an important qualification: AirPods Pro 3 have less overall case-inclusive battery life than AirPods Pro 2, but more battery life per earbud charge. Their headline figures are 24 versus 30 hours with ANC when the case is included, and 8 versus 6 hours per charge. Buy Pro 3 for longer uninterrupted sessions; prefer Pro 2 if maximum total endurance between case charges matters more.
