AirPods Pro 3: Price, Features, Battery, and Whether You Should Buy in 2026

AirPods Pro 3 launched on September 19, 2025. Here is what the rumors got right, what Apple actually shipped, and whether Pro 3 or discounted Pro 2 is the better buy in 2026.

AirPods Pro 3 are no longer a rumor. Apple announced them on September 9, 2025, opened preorders the same day, and put them on sale on September 19 for $249 in the United States. The original claim that they were only weeks away was broadly correct at the time, but it is now stale news.

AirPods Pro 3 are currently Apple’s flagship in-ear AirPods. They bring stronger noise cancellation, a redesigned fit, workout heart-rate sensing, IP57 protection, and longer single-charge earbud life. They also retain the H2 chip used by AirPods Pro 2, have a shorter total case reserve than the older model, and do not include a USB-C cable.

Updated for August 10, 2026: AirPods Pro 3 launched in September 2025. This article separates the original pre-launch rumors from the features that actually shipped and explains whether buying AirPods Pro 2 at a discount still makes sense.

Table of Contents

The short answer

  • Were they weeks away? Yes. Apple announced AirPods Pro 3 on September 9, 2025, with retail availability on September 19.
  • What did Apple launch? A redesigned $249 in-ear model with improved ANC, five ear-tip sizes, workout heart-rate sensing, Live Translation support, IP57 resistance, and up to eight hours of listening with ANC enabled.
  • Did the H3 chip, temperature sensing, or cameras arrive? No. Apple lists the H2 chip in its official specifications. Temperature sensing was not listed, and cameras were not part of AirPods Pro 3.
  • Should you buy? Buy AirPods Pro 3 if you want Apple’s newest in-ear design, the best individual earbud battery life in the current Pro line, stronger ANC, or workout heart-rate tracking. Choose discounted AirPods Pro 2 if price and 30-hour total case battery matter more.
  • Should you wait for AirPods Pro 4? There is no official AirPods Pro 4 announcement. Separate reports about camera-equipped AirPods or an AirPods Ultra remain unconfirmed and disagree about timing.

The original MacRumors rumor report is useful as a historical snapshot, but its URL contains August 13, 2025 while the page currently displays September 2, 2025 as the article date. Either way, it was written before launch and should not be treated as current product news.

Rumor versus reality

The pre-launch reporting got the broad launch window right, but several expected features either changed or never appeared. The clearest way to understand AirPods Pro 3 is to compare the predictions with Apple’s final specifications.

What actually changed in AirPods Pro 3?

Redesigned earbuds and five tip sizes

AirPods Pro 3 use a redesigned internal layout and a different ear-tip position intended to improve stability and sealing. Apple added an XXS option to the previous XS, S, M, and L range, giving buyers five sizes in total. The new tips are foam-infused silicone, combining the familiar silicone surface with additional passive isolation.

Each earbud measures 30.9 mm high, 19.2 mm wide, and 27.0 mm deep, and weighs 5.55 grams. The case measures 47.2 mm high, 62.2 mm wide, and 21.8 mm deep, and weighs 43.99 grams. It remains available in white.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The case also has a built-in speaker for Find My alerts and a lanyard loop. These are practical changes rather than headline features, particularly for people who frequently misplace the case or carry it while exercising.

Fit remains personal. Independent coverage found that the firmer foam-infused tips improved stability for some users but caused discomfort for others. The additional XXS size increases the chance of finding a good seal, but it does not guarantee that AirPods Pro 3 will be more comfortable than AirPods Pro 2 for every ear. Try all five sizes before judging the fit. SoundGuys’ fit testing discusses the variation in comfort.

Stronger ANC, but do not treat the claim as a universal benchmark

Apple says AirPods Pro 3 provide up to twice as much active noise cancellation as AirPods Pro 2 and up to four times as much as the original AirPods Pro. Those are Apple claims based on controlled testing. The phrase “up to” matters: actual results depend on the ear seal, the noise source, the selected mode, and the listener.

The hardware and acoustic changes include a new multiport acoustic architecture, updated Adaptive EQ, ultra-low-noise microphones, and more personalized Transparency mode. The foam-infused tips also contribute passive isolation, so the perceived improvement is not solely the result of a new processor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent testing generally found the ANC very strong. However, sound preferences varied, and some reviewers did not consider the audio improvement dramatic for every listener. RTINGS’ testing and the SoundGuys review are useful counterweights to Apple’s marketing claims.

The chip is H2, not H3

One important rumor did not survive contact with the final product. AirPods Pro 3 use Apple’s H2 chip, the same headline chip used in AirPods Pro 2. Apple’s technical specifications do not identify an H3.

Rank #2
Apple AirPods 4 Wireless Earbuds
  • REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
  • PERSONALIZED SPATIAL AUDIO — Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you, creating a theater-like listening experience for music, TV shows, movies, games, and more.*
  • IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — AirPods 4 feature the Apple-designed H2 chip. Voice Isolation improves the quality of phone calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*
  • MAGICAL EXPERIENCE — Just say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to play a song, make a call, or check your schedule.* And with Siri Interactions, now you can respond to Siri by simply nodding your head yes or shaking your head no.* Pair AirPods 4 by simply placing them near your device and tapping Connect on your screen.* Easily share a song or show between two sets of AirPods.* An optical in-ear sensor knows to play audio only when you’re wearing AirPods and pauses when you take them off. And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*

That does not mean AirPods Pro 3 are unchanged internally. The gains appear to come from the acoustic redesign, microphones, ear tips, computational audio, and software. But it would be inaccurate to describe Pro 3 as the first H3 AirPods or to attribute every improvement to a new audio processor.

Heart-rate sensing: useful for workouts, not an all-day health monitor

AirPods Pro 3 add an in-ear photoplethysmography sensor. It uses invisible infrared light pulsed 256 times per second to estimate heart rate while you exercise. Readings can be used by the Fitness app and supported third-party iPhone apps, and data can appear in the Health app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a workout feature rather than continuous, all-day heart monitoring. At least one AirPod must be worn, the earbuds must be connected to the iPhone, and a good ear-tip seal and clean sensor area matter. The heart-rate sensor can also reduce battery life: Apple rates workout use with heart-rate sensing at up to 6.5 hours, compared with up to 8 hours with ANC enabled under its standard test conditions.

Heart-rate readings can appear as dashes when the seal is poor or sensor contact is unreliable. Calories and broader activity figures may also use information from the iPhone and Health app, so they should not be treated as measurements produced solely by the earbuds. Apple’s heart-rate support guide explains the requirements and limitations.

Live Translation is real, but it is not a Pro 3 exclusive

Live Translation arrived with AirPods Pro 3, but the feature is also supported on AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Max 2 when the necessary software and hardware requirements are met. It is therefore a broader Apple ecosystem feature, not a reason by itself to upgrade from Pro 2.

Apple’s support documentation says you need:

  • Compatible AirPods with the latest firmware.
  • An Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, specified by Apple as iPhone 15 Pro or later.
  • iOS 26 or later.
  • Apple Intelligence enabled.
  • The required language packs downloaded.
  • A supported language and region.

The feature is listed as being available in beta and is not offered in every language or country. The cited Apple guide specifically excludes mainland China. Translation processing also occurs on the iPhone after the required languages are downloaded; it is not a fully self-contained translation system operating only inside the earbuds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Live Translation is your main reason for buying, check Apple’s current requirements and supported-language list before spending $249. A compatible iPhone and region are just as important as the AirPods model.

Battery life: better earbuds, smaller total case reserve

AirPods Pro 3 improve the headline battery figure for the earbuds but reduce the total advertised reserve in the charging case compared with AirPods Pro 2.

Use case AirPods Pro 3
Listening with ANC enabled Up to 8 hours per charge
Spatial Audio and head tracking Up to 7.5 hours
Workout with heart-rate sensing Up to 6.5 hours
Transparency mode with Hearing Aid active Up to 10 hours
Earbuds plus case with ANC enabled Up to 24 hours total
Five-minute case charge Approximately one hour of listening
Model Earbud battery with ANC Total with case
AirPods Pro 2 Up to 6 hours Up to 30 hours
AirPods Pro 3 Up to 8 hours Up to 24 hours

This is a genuine trade-off. Pro 3 are better for a long individual listening session, while Pro 2 offer a larger total reserve for travelers who rely on the case between wall charges. Spatial Audio, head tracking, heart-rate sensing, volume, temperature, fit, and other settings can all change real-world endurance. Apple’s figures are controlled laboratory estimates, not a guarantee for every listening pattern. Apple’s comparison page shows the Pro 2 and Pro 3 battery figures side by side.

Apple AirPods 4 Wireless Earbuds with Active Noise Cancellation
  • REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
  • ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation help reduce outside noise before it reaches your ears, so you can immerse yourself in what you’re listening to.*
  • HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*
  • IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions.

IP57 resistance is an upgrade, not a license to swim with them

AirPods Pro 3 and their charging case carry an IP57 rating under IEC 60529. Apple describes them for non-water sports and exercise, including sweat exposure, but warns that resistance can decline with normal wear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They should not be treated as waterproof or swim-safe headphones. Do not deliberately submerge them, and do not charge the earbuds or case while they are wet. Dry them fully before placing them on a charger. The Apple Store listing contains the relevant resistance warnings.

Charging, package contents, and compatibility

The case supports USB-C, MagSafe, Qi, and Apple Watch charging. The package includes the earbuds, charging case, ear tips, and documentation, but Apple does not include a USB-C charging cable or power adapter.

AirPods Pro 3 can work as Bluetooth headphones with Android, Windows, and other non-Apple devices, but Apple warns that functionality may be limited. The strongest feature set requires current Apple hardware, operating systems, and firmware. Bluetooth 5.3 is listed in Apple’s specifications.

As of this article’s update date, Apple’s AirPods firmware page lists 8B41 for AirPods Pro 3. Firmware can change without notice, so check Apple’s page immediately before publication or purchase if a feature such as Live Translation is important.

Hearing-health features have regional and regulatory limits

AirPods Pro 3 support Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, and Automatic Conversation Boost when Hearing Aid is active. Apple positions the Hearing Aid feature for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss.

These features are not universally available. Activation depends on the user’s country or region, regulatory authorization, age requirements, and compatible software. They should not be presented as a universally available medical device or as a substitute for professional hearing care. Check Apple’s Hearing Aid support page and its hearing-health availability guide for local restrictions.

AirPods Pro 3 versus AirPods Pro 2

Priority Better choice Why
Lowest purchase price Discounted AirPods Pro 2 The older model can deliver much of the Apple ecosystem experience for less.
Longest individual earbud session AirPods Pro 3 Up to 8 hours with ANC versus up to 6 hours for Pro 2.
Longest total case reserve AirPods Pro 2 Up to 30 hours total versus 24 hours for Pro 3.
Workout heart-rate tracking AirPods Pro 3 Pro 3 adds the in-ear heart-rate sensor.
Newest fit options AirPods Pro 3 Pro 3 adds the XXS tip and uses foam-infused silicone tips.
Higher resistance rating AirPods Pro 3 Pro 3 has an IP57 rating.
Live Translation Either, if compatible Live Translation is also available on supported AirPods Pro 2 with the required iPhone and software.
H2-based Apple features at a lower price AirPods Pro 2 Both models use H2 and share major Apple ecosystem and hearing-health capabilities.
No silicone ear tips AirPods 4 with ANC AirPods 4 with ANC cost $179 in the U.S. and use a semi-open design, but lack Pro 3 heart-rate sensing and the Pro silicone seal.

AirPods Pro 2 remain sensible when their discount is substantial. They share H2, support major Apple ecosystem features, and can be the better choice for someone who values the case’s 30-hour total reserve or finds the older fit more comfortable. Apple’s Pro 2 specifications and official comparison page are the best places to verify model differences.

AirPods 4 with ANC are the more relevant alternative for buyers who dislike silicone ear tips. Who should buy AirPods Pro 3 now?

Buy AirPods Pro 3 if:

  • You want Apple’s current flagship in-ear ANC model.
  • You value longer individual earbud battery life more than total case capacity.
  • You want workout heart-rate readings without wearing a separate sensor for every session.
  • You need the new XXS tip or prefer the redesigned fit.
  • You exercise frequently and value the IP57 rating, while understanding that it is not swim protection.
  • You use an iPhone and Apple ecosystem devices and want the newest Pro hardware.

Buy discounted AirPods Pro 2 if:

  • You do not need in-ear heart-rate sensing.
  • The retailer’s price is meaningfully below the $249 Pro 3 price.
  • You prefer up to 30 hours of total case battery over Pro 3’s longer eight-hour earbud rating.
  • The existing Pro 2 fit is comfortable and reliable for you.
  • You want H2-based Apple features without paying for the newest design.

Choose AirPods 4 with ANC if:

  • You dislike the sealed, silicone-tip design of AirPods Pro.
  • You prefer a semi-open fit.
  • The $179 U.S. price is more appropriate for your budget.
  • Heart-rate sensing and Pro hearing features are not priorities.

Common problems and how to troubleshoot them

Heart-rate data is missing or shows dashes

  1. Make sure at least one AirPod is being worn.
  2. Confirm the AirPods are connected to the iPhone.
  3. Try a different tip size to improve the seal and sensor contact.
  4. Clean the earbuds and the sensor area.
  5. Check that the workout app has permission to read the necessary Health data.
  6. Update iOS and the AirPods firmware.

A poor seal can affect both ANC and heart-rate readings. If the earbuds remain uncomfortable after trying all five tips, the limitation may be the shape of your ears rather than a software problem.

Live Translation is unavailable

Check the iPhone model first: Apple requires an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, including iPhone 15 Pro or later according to its support guide. Then confirm that iOS 26 or later and Apple Intelligence are enabled, the AirPods firmware is current, the necessary languages are downloaded, and the feature is supported in your country or region. Live Translation will not provide its full feature set when the AirPods are paired only with a non-Apple phone.

The earbuds got wet

Do not place wet earbuds or a wet case on a charger. Wipe them off and allow them to dry completely. IP57 resistance is intended to reduce risk during exercise; it does not remove the risk of damage from swimming, prolonged immersion, or repeated water exposure.

Battery life falls short of the advertised figure

Compare your use with Apple’s test modes. Spatial Audio and head tracking, workout heart-rate sensing, high volume, environmental conditions, and fit can all reduce endurance. Remember that the eight-hour rating is for a particular ANC test condition, while heart-rate workout use is rated at up to 6.5 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What comes after AirPods Pro 3?

There is no official AirPods Pro 4 announcement as of August 10, 2026. Apple’s AirPods newsroom archive identifies AirPods Pro 3 as the September 2025 model and does not list a confirmed successor.

Separate reports concern possible camera-equipped AirPods or an AirPods Ultra product. Bloomberg reported in May 2026 that camera-equipped AirPods had reached advanced testing. A June Bloomberg Law report pointed to a possible late-2027 launch, while an August MacRumors report suggested an AirPods Ultra could arrive as soon as late 2026.

Those reports conflict, and Apple has announced neither the product, its final name, its specifications, nor its price. Cameras are therefore not a reason to assume that AirPods Pro 3 have hidden camera hardware, and they are not a firm reason to postpone a purchase unless you are comfortable waiting for an unconfirmed product.

Verdict

AirPods Pro 3 delivered the central promise of the 2025 rumors: a redesigned model with substantially stronger ANC, better individual battery life, a new health sensor, and improved durability. The launch timing and $249 U.S. price were also correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The more important 2026 question is value. Pro 3 are the better buy for fitness tracking, the newest fit, IP57 protection, and longer listening between case visits. Discounted AirPods Pro 2 are still compelling because they use H2, support many of the same ecosystem features, and offer 30 hours of total case battery. Live Translation should not decide the purchase on its own, since it is also available on supported older AirPods and depends heavily on the iPhone, software, language, and region.

If you need premium Apple earbuds now, there is no confirmed Pro 4 launch to wait for. Buy AirPods Pro 3 when their specific upgrades justify the price; otherwise, take the Pro 2 discount and do not pay for rumors that may not ship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are AirPods Pro 3 still coming soon?

No. AirPods Pro 3 launched on September 19, 2025 and are currently available from Apple in the United States for $249. The phrase just weeks away only makes sense in the original 2025 pre-launch context.

Do AirPods Pro 3 use an H3 chip?

No. Apple’s official specifications list the H2 chip. The improvements come from the redesigned acoustics, microphones, ear tips, computational audio, and software rather than a publicly identified H3 processor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do AirPods Pro 3 monitor heart rate all day?

No. Their infrared photoplethysmography sensor is designed for workout heart-rate tracking through the Fitness app and supported third-party iPhone apps. Fit, sensor cleanliness, connectivity, and app permissions affect the readings.

Should I buy AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3?

Buy Pro 3 for heart-rate sensing, the redesigned fit, IP57 resistance, and up to eight hours of ANC listening per charge. Choose Pro 2 if they are substantially discounted, you prefer their fit, or you value their up-to-30-hour total case battery.

Are AirPods Pro 4 confirmed?

No. Apple has not officially announced AirPods Pro 4. Reports about future camera-equipped AirPods or an AirPods Ultra product disagree about whether a launch could happen in late 2026 or late 2027.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The AirPods Pro 3 rumor came true, but the buying decision is now about trade-offs—not whether to wait a few weeks. Choose Pro 3 for the latest fit, stronger ANC, workout heart-rate sensing, IP57 protection, and eight-hour earbud battery life. Choose discounted Pro 2 for lower cost and the larger 30-hour case reserve. No AirPods Pro 4 has been confirmed.
