AirPods Pro 3 launched on September 19, 2025, at $249 in the U.S. They look like a normal Pro-series update, but the meaningful changes are concentrated in three areas: workout heart-rate tracking, a redesigned fit, and stronger water and dust resistance. Battery life also improves in the earbuds, although the charging case holds less total listening time than the USB-C AirPods Pro 2.
Several headline features are not exclusive to this generation. Live Translation, Hearing Health features, sleep pausing, the camera remote, and newer recording features also work on selected older AirPods when the hardware, firmware, and Apple devices meet the requirements.
What AirPods Pro 3 actually add
Heart-rate tracking during workouts
AirPods Pro 3 use optical sensors inside the earbuds to measure heart rate while you exercise. The reading can appear in Apple’s Fitness app and in supported third-party workout apps on an iPhone. The earbuds can also provide heart-rate data while audio is playing from an iPad, Mac, or Apple TV, provided the devices use the same Apple Account. Apple Support documents these compatibility details.
On an iPhone, open Fitness → Workout and start a workout. You can wear just one AirPod and still use heart-rate tracking. If the reading shows dashes or appears dimmed, check that the earbud is seated properly and that the Bluetooth connection is active.

Heart-rate monitoring is enabled by default. To turn it off, open Settings → tap the connected AirPods Pro 3 near the top → Heart Rate, then disable the setting.
Fit is especially important here. The sensor needs contact with the skin inside the ear. A loose earbud, the wrong tip size, or dirt around the sensor can result in missing or unreliable measurements. Cleaning the earbuds, trying a different tip, and making sure your Health information is current are sensible first steps.
New earbud shape and five tip sizes
Apple revised the internal shape of the earbuds and introduced foam-infused tips. The box includes XXS, XS, S, M, and L, giving smaller ears an option that previous models did not provide, according to Apple’s technical specifications.
AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 tips are not interchangeable. If you upgrade, you need to use the tips supplied for the new generation.

Some users get a more secure seal, while others notice extra pressure or deeper insertion. Try every supplied size rather than assuming the medium tips are correct. A tighter seal can improve noise isolation and change the amount of bass you hear, so tip choice affects both comfort and sound.
IP57 protection for earbuds and case
Both the earbuds and charging case have an IP57 dust- and water-resistance rating, as Apple Support confirms. That is a substantial change for users who exercise outdoors or regularly carry their case in less-than-ideal conditions.
It does not mean the AirPods are designed for swimming, showering, or water sports. Apple says resistance can decline through normal wear and warns against charging either the case or earbuds while wet. Dry everything thoroughly before connecting the case to power.

Stronger noise control and revised acoustics
AirPods Pro 3 combine ultra-low-noise microphones, a new multiport acoustic architecture, revised Adaptive EQ, and the new foam-infused tips. Apple claims up to twice the noise cancellation of AirPods Pro 2 and up to four times that of the original AirPods Pro, according to its launch announcement.

Those are controlled-test comparisons, not a guarantee that every listener will experience a twofold improvement in every environment. Fit, background noise, ear shape, and the seal created by the tips all affect ANC performance.
Longer battery life in the earbuds
With ANC enabled, Apple rates the AirPods Pro 3 earbuds for up to eight hours on one charge. That is up from six hours for AirPods Pro 2. The headline figure changes when other features are active; these figures come from Apple’s technical specifications:

The case tells a less positive story. Apple rates AirPods Pro 3 for up to 24 hours of listening with ANC, compared with up to 30 hours for the USB-C AirPods Pro 2 case, according to the Pro 3 specifications and Pro 2 specifications. A five-minute charge still provides approximately one hour of listening under Apple’s test conditions.
Newer Precision Finding for the case
The charging case gains newer Ultra Wideband-based location hardware, making Precision Finding more useful when you have misplaced it nearby. Find My support requires iOS 26 or later, according to Apple Support.

Features AirPods Pro 3 do not own
Live Translation also works on selected older AirPods
Live Translation is not a Pro 3-exclusive feature. Apple also supports it on AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Max 2 when the required software and firmware are installed.

To prepare the languages, open Settings → tap the connected AirPods → Translation → Languages, then download both languages. Next, open Translate → Live, select the other person’s language and your target language, and tap Start Translation. You can also press and hold both AirPods stems at the same time or say, “Siri, start Live Translation.”
The translation is processed on the iPhone after the language models are downloaded. The earbuds are not independent translators. Availability varies by region and language, and Apple warns that generative translation may be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive.
Hearing features are inherited from AirPods Pro 2
Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection are not new to AirPods Pro 3. AirPods Pro 2 also support them with compatible firmware and Apple devices. The main Pro 3 improvement in this area is battery life: Apple rates Hearing Aid mode for up to 10 hours in Transparency under its test conditions, as stated in its support information.
Sleep pausing and the camera remote are software features
Automatic sleep pausing and using AirPods as a camera remote are also available on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with the relevant iOS 26 software. They are useful additions, but they should not be treated as reasons to replace a functioning Pro 2 pair by themselves.
Recording and call improvements are not Pro 3-only
Studio-quality recording and improved call audio are supported on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 models as well as AirPods Pro 3, provided the device and firmware requirements are met. The newer earbuds may still sound different in use, but the underlying feature is not exclusive hardware reserved for Pro 3.
What has barely changed
There is still an H2 chip, not an H3
AirPods Pro 3 continue to use Apple’s H2 chip and Bluetooth 5.3, according to Apple’s technical specifications. This is an evolution of the Pro 2 platform rather than a new chip-generation leap.
No conventional manual equalizer
There is no standard multi-band EQ for manually reshaping the basic sound signature. The tuning differs from AirPods Pro 2 according to independent testing by RTINGS, but users cannot correct specific frequencies with a normal graphical equalizer built into iOS.

No lossless iPhone playback
Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 specifications list Bluetooth 5.3 but do not list lossless playback for iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. Do not confuse this with separate lossless and low-latency capabilities associated with other Apple headphone arrangements, including certain AirPods Pro 2 and Apple Vision Pro combinations.
The cable is still absent
The box contains the earbuds, charging case, five ear-tip sizes, and documentation. A USB-C charging cable is sold separately, according to Apple’s specifications.

As of August 8, 2026, Apple lists firmware 8B41 as the latest AirPods Pro 3 version. Its release note says only “Bug fixes and other improvements,” according to Apple’s firmware update notes.

There is no manual Update button. Apple delivers firmware automatically while the earbuds are charging, near a Bluetooth-connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac that has Wi-Fi access. To give the update the best chance of completing, follow Apple’s procedure:
- Connect the charging case to power.
- Put both AirPods in the charging case.
- Close the lid.
- Keep the case near the connected Apple device for at least 30 minutes.
- Reconnect the AirPods and check the firmware version again.
Using AirPods Pro 3 with Android
AirPods Pro 3 work as Bluetooth earbuds with Android devices, but the Apple-specific layer is substantially reduced. Heart-rate integration with Fitness and Health, Live Translation, Apple-specific controls, and other advanced features require compatible Apple hardware and current software.
They are therefore a poor choice if Android is your primary phone and you specifically want the new health functions. For straightforward Bluetooth audio, calls, and noise cancellation, they remain usable, but the purchase makes more sense inside Apple’s ecosystem.

For an existing Pro 2 owner, the clearest reasons to upgrade are heart-rate tracking, the revised fit, IP57 protection, stronger claimed noise control, and longer per-charge earbud life. Live Translation, hearing tools, sleep pausing, the camera remote, and newer recording features are not sufficient on their own because selected older AirPods can also use them.

Are AirPods Pro 3 worth upgrading from AirPods Pro 2?
They are most compelling if you want in-ear heart-rate tracking, the redesigned fit, IP57 protection, stronger noise control, or up to eight hours of ANC listening per charge. If you mainly want Live Translation, hearing features, sleep pausing, or the camera remote, AirPods Pro 2 already support many of those functions.
Do AirPods Pro 3 have an H3 chip or lossless audio?
No. They use the H2 chip and Bluetooth 5.3. Apple does not list lossless playback for AirPods Pro 3 on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.
Can AirPods Pro 3 track heart rate without an iPhone?
They can provide heart-rate data while audio plays from an iPad, Mac, or Apple TV on the same Apple Account, but the Fitness app workout setup and viewing experience described by Apple is on iPhone. Supported third-party apps and Apple-device compatibility are required.
Can I swim with AirPods Pro 3 because they are IP57-rated?
No. IP57 provides protection against dust and limited water exposure, but Apple says the earbuds and case are not suitable for swimming or other water sports. Do not charge them while wet, and remember that resistance can decline with wear.
The Bottom Line
AirPods Pro 3 are a meaningful upgrade, but not because every new Apple audio feature belongs to them. The real changes are heart-rate sensing, a redesigned five-size tip system, IP57 protection, improved acoustic hardware, longer earbud battery life, and better case finding. The H2 chip remains, there is no conventional EQ or iPhone lossless playback, and the case actually offers less total ANC listening time than AirPods Pro 2.
For new buyers with an iPhone, Pro 3 are the more complete choice. For Pro 2 owners, upgrade only if the health tracking, fit, durability, or per-charge battery improvements solve a problem you actually have.
