The Alsta Superautomatic is worth considering if its JAWS history and distinctive design matter to you, but the answer depends on which version you mean. The earlier Superautomatic 1975 has a common Seiko NH35A movement and a notably tall profile; the 2025 reimagining uses a Sellita SW200-1 and is listed at 13.2 mm thick. Decide based on the actual price, fit, and how much you value the film connection—and verify current stock and regional pricing before buying.
First, identify which Alsta Superautomatic you are considering
There are two versions buyers can easily conflate:
- The earlier Superautomatic 1975: Alsta says it returned toward the end of 2019, was limited to 1,975 pieces, and uses a Seiko NH35A automatic movement. It was initially presented as a reissue.
- The Superautomatic 2025: Alsta describes this as a reimagining, not simply a reissue. It uses a Sellita SW200-1 movement and has a slimmer listed case profile.
This article assesses both. The 2020 independent review evidence discussed below concerns the earlier NH35-powered model only; it should not be assumed to describe the 2025 version.
Why the watch is associated with JAWS
Alsta says its original Superautomatic arrived in 1970 and was worn by Richard Dreyfuss as Matt Hooper in the 1975 film JAWS. The connection is central to the watch’s identity, but it is not evidence of better performance by itself.
Alsta says the earlier Superautomatic 1975 was limited to 1,975 pieces, referring to the film’s release year. That limited run gives the model an obvious film-history angle, but scarcity alone does not establish future value or appreciation.

Earlier Superautomatic 1975 specifications
| Specification | Earlier Superautomatic 1975 |
|---|---|
| Case | 316L stainless steel |
| Diameter | 38 mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 43 mm |
| Lug width | 20 mm |
| Thickness | 15.7 mm from caseback to crystal apex, according to Alsta; a Fratello reviewer measured 15.1 mm including the crystal |
| Movement | Seiko NH35A automatic |
| Water resistance | 999 ft / 300 m, according to Alsta |
| Production | Limited to 1,975 pieces, according to Alsta |
The thickness figures come from different sources and measurement methods, so they should not be collapsed into one uncontested measurement. Both indicate a tall watch for its 38 mm diameter.
Design and wearability
The Superautomatic’s cushion case, vintage-inspired dial, and porthole bracelet distinguish it from more conventional diver designs. Its cinematic association and recognizable styling may appeal more than movement specifications to a collector who wants a conversation piece.
For the earlier model, Rob Nudds’s Fratello review of November 3, 2020, praised the design but described the watch as wearing “like a brick.” He criticized its height and the bracelet’s detailing and machining. His review is evidence of one hands-on assessment of the earlier model, not a finding about the 2025 edition.

- ELEGANT CARBON FIBER DESIGN: Made of high-quality PU leather with a transparent acrylic window. The smooth PU leather interior reliably protects your mechanical watches from scratches. A stylish eye-catcher and the perfect presentation for your valuable watch collection.
- IMPORTANT SIZE COMPATIBILITY (PLEASE CHECK): To ensure smooth operation and prevent motor damage, this dual watch winder is designed for watches with the following maximum dimensions: Dial diameter under 47 mm, case thickness under 28 mm, and strap circumference under 175-195 mm. It can accommodate large watches, but cannot simultaneously hold two mechanical watches with a dial diameter of 58 mm with crown. Please measure your watch before purchasing.
- OPERATING PRINCIPLE: A watch winder serves exclusively to maintain the power reserve and simulates the natural movement of the wrist. It CANNOT wind a completely stopped watch from zero. Important: Please manually wind the crown of your watch approx 20-40 times before placing it in the winder. It CANNOT start or wind a completely stopped watch from zero. We also recommend manually checking the time once a week.
- INTELLIGENT INTERVAL ROTATION: Programmed with pauses to prevent over-winding. Mode B: 2 min clockwise, 6 min pause, 2 min counterclockwise. Mode L: 2 min counterclockwise, 18 min pause, 2 min clockwise. (If you see the winder rotate and then stop, this is the programmed pause — NOT a malfunction. Please wait through the full pause period (6 min for Mode B, 18 min for Mode L) )You can switch the device off when not in use.(Speed: 970-2430 TPD. Automatic watches only. NOT for Quartz, Seiko Kinetic, or Citizen Eco-Drive).
- CONSTANT POWER SUPPLY (NO BATTERY): Please note that this device does not have a built-in battery and must be permanently connected to a power source (3V~9V, 0.5A) during operation. A connection cable is included (power adapter NOT included). Multiple watch winders can be conveniently connected in series via the cable to save space and power outlets.
Alsta lists the 2025 model at 38 mm in diameter, 43 mm lug-to-lug, and 13.2 mm thick. Those measurements suggest a less tall profile on paper than the earlier watch, but independent hands-on assessments of the 2025 model were not established in this research. Wrist shape and personal preference still affect fit.
Movement and value
The earlier Superautomatic 1975 uses a Seiko NH35A automatic movement. Its practical functions and wide familiarity do not make it a poor movement, but buyers should weigh it against the actual asking price and the rest of the watch.
In his 2020 review, Fratello’s Rob Nudds objected to the earlier watch’s then-listed €878.41 bracelet price in light of its NH35 movement and criticized the bracelet’s execution. That is a historical price and one reviewer’s value judgment—not a current quote or a rule for every buyer.

The 2025 model changes that equation with a listed Swiss Sellita SW200-1 movement. Alsta specifies 26 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour, a 38-hour power reserve, and accuracy of ±12 seconds per day. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results.

Alsta also lists a Hooper stainless-steel bracelet and an Orca rubber strap option. How to judge whether it is worth it
- Check the total price and availability. Alsta’s product page showed the 2025 model as sold out when accessed for this research. The page text did not establish a stable current purchase price. Confirm regional stock, taxes, shipping, and total cost before buying.
- Compare fit measurements. Use the 38 mm diameter together with the 43 mm lug-to-lug and 13.2 mm thickness listed for the 2025 model. For the earlier version, allow for its considerably taller stated measurements.
- Weigh the movement against the price. Distinguish the earlier NH35A from the 2025 Sellita SW200-1, and assess the movement alongside case and bracelet execution.
- Seek current-version evidence. The earlier review criticized bracelet execution. Treat that as a reason to inspect the 2025 model’s bracelet, clasp, and finishing rather than proof that the newer version has the same weaknesses.
- Consider the intended use. Alsta lists 300 m water resistance and a screw-down crown for the 2025 model. These are manufacturer claims, not independent testing; follow proper dive-watch practices and do not treat a product-page rating as proof that a particular watch remains water-resistant.
- Decide what the heritage is worth to you. The JAWS story, cushion case, and porthole bracelet give the watch its character. They do not guarantee collectibility or investment returns.
Who should consider each version?
The earlier Superautomatic 1975 may suit you if
- You specifically want the limited, film-linked earlier model.
- You like its design enough to accept the NH35A movement and tall profile.
- You can assess its condition and provenance and find its asking price compelling.
The Superautomatic 2025 may suit you if
- You prefer the listed Sellita SW200-1 movement and slimmer 13.2 mm profile.
- The 38 mm diameter, 43 mm lug-to-lug, and 20 mm lug width suit your wrist and strap preferences.
- You have checked current availability and price and are comfortable buying without established independent hands-on evidence in this research.
Final verdict
The earlier Superautomatic 1975 is a design- and film-history purchase, not an obvious movement-led bargain. Its 1,975-piece run, NH35A movement, tall profile, and the criticisms in one 2020 hands-on review are useful context, but the right price depends on condition and buyer priorities.

The Superautomatic 2025 is easier to defend technically on the manufacturer’s listed specifications: it has a Sellita SW200-1 and a 13.2 mm profile. Its value still depends on current price, availability, wrist fit, and the buyer’s interest in the JAWS story. The official listing showed it sold out when accessed, and the research did not establish a stable current price or independent hands-on assessment of this version.
