The AMIDA Digitrend is a mechanical driver’s watch, not an electronic digital watch. Its movement runs horizontally; jumping-hour and minute discs are reflected by a sapphire prism so the time appears vertically readable from the side of the wrist. The 2024 model revives a design first introduced in 1976, with updated mechanics and multiple editions.
How does the AMIDA Digitrend work?
The Digitrend places its time display on the side of the case, where a driver can read it without turning the wrist toward the steering wheel. Inside, the discs operate horizontally. An optical-grade sapphire prism reflects their image upward into a vertical viewing window; AMIDA calls this arrangement its Light Reflecting Display (LRD).
The hour disc advances in jumps, while the minute disc sweeps past the display. The unusual presentation can look like a digital readout, but it is generated mechanically. AMIDA describes the LRD by saying, “There is no luminous or electronic display.” The brand says the optical system was patented as US patent 3,786,626 on April 5, 1973.
What is new about the 2024 Digitrend?
AMIDA presents the 2024 release as a revival of the Digitrend, originally introduced at Baselworld in March 1976. The original was a mechanical alternative to the LCD electronic watches of its era. The modern version preserves the sideways-reading optical concept while using contemporary components and finishing.

In the Black edition, the automatic base movement is a Swiss Soprod NEWTON P092, paired with AMIDA’s in-house-developed jumping-hour auxiliary module. AMIDA specifies that the module uses nine mechanical components and six screws. The hour-and-minute display remains mechanical rather than screen-based.

What to consider before buying
The prism changes how you read the watch
The side-facing display is the Digitrend’s defining feature, but it is also a departure from a conventional dial. Check that the viewing angle and reflected numerals suit how you plan to wear and read it. The case’s 15.6 mm height and 39.6 × 39 mm footprint are worth considering alongside the display, particularly if you usually prefer slim, round watches.
Compare the exact edition and configuration
AMIDA’s catalog includes Black, Steel, Gold, NASA Tribute and limited or archival editions. Finishing, materials, display treatment, strap or bracelet, dimensions, weight, stock and price can vary. The Open Sapphire page describes a numbered run of 150 and marks it sold out; it should not be treated as currently available. A specialist report on the original 2024 Black and Gold versions described a bracelet taper from 22 mm to 18 mm and quick-release spring bars. Those details are secondary reporting, not a guarantee for every current option; confirm them against the exact manufacturer configuration before relying on them for fit.
Check the live price and availability
AMIDA sells directly and displays prices in Swiss francs. Its Black product page showed CHF 3,600, excluding taxes, when indexed; the collection page separately showed a “from” price of CHF 3,250 for Black. Those figures may refer to different configurations or catalog states, so they should not be treated as interchangeable or assumed current. Confirm the edition, selected strap or bracelet, taxes, shipping destination and stock on the live product page before ordering. The official pages cited here do not establish Amazon availability.

How the 2024 revival relates to the 1976 original
The Digitrend’s identity lies in its mechanical side-reading arrangement rather than in an electronic display. The 2024 revival keeps that unusual format and updates the movement and execution.
