The AMIDA Digitrend looks digital, but it is a mechanical watch: jumping-hour and minute discs are reflected upward through a sapphire prism so the time appears vertically. The modern Steel model revives a design AMIDA says it introduced in 1976, pairing that optical display with a Swiss automatic movement. This is an explanation of the watch and its listed specifications, not a report of hands-on testing.
How does the AMIDA Digitrend work?
The Digitrend’s movement and discs sit horizontally in the case, while the wearer reads the time from above. A sapphire prism redirects the image of the discs upward, making the numerals appear as a vertical readout. AMIDA calls the system its Light Reflecting Display (LRD) and says the prism magnifies the numerals. In the brand’s words, “The readout is actually an optical effect created by a crystal in the shape of a prism.”
The hours advance in jumps, while the minutes sweep continuously. There is no electronic screen or illumination: the vertical presentation is an optical reflection of mechanically driven discs. AMIDA associates its jumping-hour mechanism with patent No. 3,685,283, filed November 13, 1970, and the LRD with patent No. 3,786,626, dated April 5, 1973; those patent details are the manufacturer’s account.
Is the AMIDA Digitrend a digital watch?
No. “Digital” describes the way its time is displayed in separate numerals, not the technology inside it. The Digitrend is a mechanical watch with an automatic movement, a jumping-hour module and an optical prism. It does not use an electronic display.

What is the story behind the Digitrend?
AMIDA says it was founded in 1925 and introduced the original mechanical Digitrend at Baselworld in March 1976. The current design is described by the brand as a 2024 revival. Independent watch coverage also reported on the revival in 2024, but the historical chronology here is based on AMIDA’s own account.
The driver-oriented layout is central to the concept: rather than turning the wrist toward the wearer to read conventional hands, the display directs the time upward. The modern version retains that unusual presentation while using contemporary automatic mechanics and sapphire optics.

What movement is in the new AMIDA Digitrend?
The Steel and NASA Tribute models use a Soprod Newton P092 Swiss automatic movement with AMIDA’s nine-component in-house jumping-hour auxiliary module. AMIDA lists 23 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), and a 44-hour power reserve. The functions are jumping hours and sweeping minutes. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results.

How much does the AMIDA Digitrend cost?
On October 7, 2026, AMIDA’s product pages listed the Steel at CHF 3,250 and the NASA Tribute at CHF 3,400, with taxes excluded. These are page prices checked on that date, not guaranteed or fixed prices. The NASA Tribute keeps the same basic movement, prism display, case dimensions and stated 5 ATM / 50 m water resistance as the Steel, but changes the materials and strap. AMIDA presents it as a NASA-inspired tribute; it is not described here as NASA-issued or NASA-approved.
