Dunselman Watchmaking lists the edition as sold out at €38,000 excluding tax and shipping; that is the maker’s status, not confirmation that no examples are available for resale.
What is the Dunselman Black Tulip?
The Black Tulip is the first watch from Dunselman Watchmaking, Dunselman’s independent atelier in Zwolle, Netherlands. The maker presents it as a manually wound watch built around two defining ideas: its Black Tulip dial and a zero-reset mechanism for the small-seconds hand. The specifications below are reported by watch publications and the maker; they are not the result of a hands-on examination for this article.
| Specification | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Case | 38.5 mm diameter, 11.9 mm height, in steel, according to Hodinkee. |
| Movement | D202.5, manually wound, with 125 parts, according to Hodinkee. |
| Power reserve | 100 hours, reported by Hodinkee and Quill & Pad. |
| Edition | 10 pieces, according to the maker’s official site. |
How does the zero-reset function work?
Pulling the crown out to set the time makes the small-seconds hand jump to 12 and stop. It starts moving again when the crown is pushed back in, according to Quill & Pad’s description. In practical terms, the seconds hand is brought to a clear starting point while the time is being set, rather than continuing to run.
Who is Annelinde Dunselman?
Dunselman’s route into watchmaking included a prior career in social work, described in a New York Times feature republished on her official site. Her watchmaking training began at Vakschool Schoonhoven, where she studied watchmaking and goldsmithing. She later interned at Jaeger-LeCoultre, studied watch decoration, and worked at Grönefeld from 2019 to 2022 before establishing her own atelier in Zwolle, according to her official biography.

In an interview with Hodinkee, she said she hoped her work would speak for itself “through quality, through recognisability,” and described her ambition as “a distinctive, timeless design that continues to resonate with people.”
Why call it the Black Tulip?
The name expresses an ideal rather than a literal claim about a flower. Dunselman’s maker narrative treats the black tulip as an emblem of rare, unattainable beauty. In the New York Times feature republished on her official site, she said, “Things we cannot make are inspiring,” and explained: “The idea of a black tulip reminds me that perfection is not possible. But I could be as close as possible.” The watch’s name therefore ties its design to the pursuit of an impossible standard, not to a claim that the watch itself is perfect.
