Apple AirPods Pro 3 vs. Pro 2: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

AirPods Pro 3 are the better new purchase, but not every AirPods Pro 2 owner should upgrade. Here is the practical difference in ANC, fit, battery, durability, heart-rate tracking, software, and value.

Short answer: As of August 10, 2026, AirPods Pro 3 are the better choice for most new buyers when they cost the same $249 as AirPods Pro 2 did at launch. They deliver stronger active noise cancellation, a redesigned fit, longer earbud battery life, tougher IP57 protection, and optional workout heart-rate tracking.

For existing AirPods Pro 2 owners, however, this is not an automatic upgrade. Keep your Pro 2 if the fit is comfortable, the battery is still healthy, and you are satisfied with its noise cancellation. Upgrade for a specific benefit—particularly ANC, stability, per-charge battery life, durability, or heart-rate sensing—not simply because the model number is newer. Live Translation, Hearing features, Spatial Audio, Voice Isolation, and several other headline features are also available on updated Pro 2 models.

The verdict at a glance

Apple discontinued AirPods Pro 2 as its current-generation product when AirPods Pro 3 launched, but remaining Pro 2 stock is still sold by third-party retailers. Apple’s current U.S. price for AirPods Pro 3 is $249; retail discounts change frequently, including a recent August 2026 sale at $189. Check the date and retailer before treating any Pro 2 or Pro 3 price as permanent. Apple’s official reference price is listed on its AirPods Pro 3 store page.

Buy AirPods Pro 3 if you travel, commute, exercise without an Apple Watch, frequently find your Pro 2 battery empty, or need a more secure and weather-resistant design. Buy or keep AirPods Pro 2 if you prefer their fit or smoother sound, value the case’s longer total reserve, or find them substantially cheaper.

What changed from AirPods Pro 2 to Pro 3?

The meaningful changes are mostly hardware changes. Apple also brought a large number of software features to Pro 2 through firmware and operating-system updates, so comparisons that label every new AirPods feature as Pro 3-exclusive are out of date.

#1 Best Overall

Hardware differences that require Pro 3

  • Redesigned earbud geometry: Pro 3 uses a different body shape intended to sit more securely in the ear.
  • Five tip sizes: The new XXS option joins XS, S, M, and L. The tips also add a foam-infused layer intended to improve sealing and stability.
  • Stronger stated and measured ANC: Apple claims up to twice as much noise removal as Pro 2, while independent tests report a real but less dramatic improvement.
  • Longer individual listening time: The earbuds are rated for up to eight hours with ANC, compared with six hours for Pro 2.
  • IP57 protection: Both Pro 3 earbuds and the case have a higher dust and water-resistance rating than either Pro 2 version.
  • Workout heart-rate sensing: Optical sensors in the earbuds can supply heart-rate data to Fitness and supported third-party workout apps.
  • Second-generation Ultra Wideband case chip: This improves the case’s precision-finding capability with compatible Apple hardware.
  • New case controls: Pro 3 replaces Pro 2’s rear setup button with a touch-sensitive area on the front for pairing and resetting.
  • Revised acoustic architecture: Apple changed the acoustic design and tuning, although whether it sounds better depends partly on listener preference.

Features that Pro 2 also has after updates

With current firmware and compatible Apple software, Pro 2 still supports a substantial portion of Apple’s premium earbud ecosystem:

  • Live Translation, subject to demanding iPhone, iOS, Apple Intelligence, language, and regional requirements.
  • Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection features where supported.
  • Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness.
  • Personalized Volume.
  • Voice Isolation.
  • Studio-quality recording.
  • Camera remote control.
  • Sleep-related audio pause.
  • Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking.
  • Updated AirPods controls and automatic device-switching behavior.

Apple’s current AirPods firmware documentation listed firmware 8B41 for both Pro 3 and Pro 2 models on June 16, 2026. Firmware updates happen automatically when the AirPods are charging, inside their case, and near a Wi-Fi-connected Apple device. To check yours, connect the AirPods, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the AirPods, choose About, and read Firmware Version.

The four upgrades that matter most

1. Pro 3 has stronger ANC, but not universally twice as strong

Apple says AirPods Pro 3 remove up to twice as much noise as AirPods Pro 2. That is an Apple claim based on Apple’s controlled test methodology, not a guarantee that every airplane engine, voice, or street noise will be reduced by exactly two times. Apple also markets Pro 3 as having the world’s best in-ear ANC; that should be understood as a company claim rather than an independently established universal ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent testing points in the same direction but gives a more restrained result. SoundGuys measured approximately 90% external-noise reduction for Pro 3 versus 83% for Pro 2 in its testing. RTINGS also found Pro 3 superior in noise isolation, particularly against street noise, while still describing Pro 2’s ANC as very strong. What Hi-Fi reported stronger suppression of aircraft rumble, chatter, and announcements during a flight comparison.

The practical conclusion is simple: Pro 3 is the better ANC performer, and frequent travelers are more likely to notice the difference than someone who mostly listens at home. It is a worthwhile upgrade for noisy commutes and flights, but Pro 2 owners should not expect every sound to suddenly become half as loud.

Fit has a major effect on ANC. If Pro 3 does not seem much better, try another tip size, check the left and right seals independently, clean away earwax or debris, and confirm that the listening mode is full Noise Cancellation rather than Adaptive Audio. Apple warns that debris and earwax can affect ANC, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio performance.

2. The new fit may be more secure—or simply less comfortable for you

Apple says Pro 3’s redesign was informed by more than 10,000 ear scans and more than 100,000 hours of user research, and calls it its best-fitting AirPods design. That research explains the design goal, but it cannot make the fit universal: ears differ too much for a single shape to suit everyone.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The five-size tip system is a genuine advantage. The new XXS option can help smaller ears, while the foam-infused silicone construction is intended to seal and hold the earbuds in place. RTINGS found a preference for Pro 3 in blind comfort testing, and SoundGuys found the newer design more stable overall.

There are trade-offs. Pro 3 can sit deeper and feel more invasive than Pro 2. Some users may dislike how its body protrudes from the ear, and sweat can still cause slipping during intense exercise. RTINGS also reported that the hybrid foam-and-silicone tips may tear more easily than Pro 2’s all-silicone tips. Inspect them regularly and replace damaged tips rather than judging ANC or fit with a torn seal.

For an existing Pro 2 owner, ask one question before upgrading: Do my current earbuds already seal securely and disappear in my ears? If the answer is yes, Pro 3’s fit may be an expensive side-grade. If Pro 2 regularly loosens, causes pressure, or cannot form a consistent seal, Pro 3’s five-size system is one of the strongest reasons to try the new model.

  • Compatibility: only compatible with AirPods Pro 3 (2025) (USB-C Cable); earbuds and charging case not included;the weight of our airpods pro 3 case is only 32.6g (1.15 oz)
  • Magnetic Locking Lid: precision fit combined with four strong magnets creates a secure, firm hold, so you never have to worry about the lid coming loose or your charging case popping open at the wrong time
  • MagSafe Ready: strong magnets built into the back of the case ensure a secure lock on MagSafe chargers, letting you enjoy tap-and-go wireless charging for your earbuds
  • Powerful Drop Protection: shock-absorbing polymer and Air Guard corners protect your charging case from even the worst drops and impacts
  • Visible Status Light: precise cutout lets you check the charging status at a glance, whether you’re charging wirelessly or with a cable

3. Pro 3 lasts longer between charges—but its case lasts less long overall

Apple’s ratings make the trade-off easy to miss:

Battery scenario AirPods Pro 3 AirPods Pro 2 USB-C
Earbuds with ANC enabled Up to 8 hours Up to 6 hours
Spatial Audio and head tracking Up to 7.5 hours Up to 5.5 hours
Workout with Pro 3 heart-rate sensing Up to 6.5 hours Not applicable
Complete system with ANC and case Up to 24 hours Up to 30 hours
Five-minute quick charge About 1 hour of listening About 1 hour of listening

Pro 3 is better for a long flight, a full workday, or any single session in which you do not want to put the earbuds back in the case. Pro 2 is better if you want the greatest total reserve from the case before finding a charger. Someone who tops up the case regularly may care much more about Pro 3’s eight-hour earbud rating; someone traveling for several days may value Pro 2’s 30-hour system rating.

Apple measured these figures at 50% volume with preproduction hardware and software. Actual runtime changes with volume, calls, ANC or Transparency use, Spatial Audio, heart-rate sensing, temperature, signal conditions, and battery age. In one independent ANC playback test, SoundGuys recorded 8 hours 42 minutes for Pro 3 versus 5 hours 43 minutes for Pro 2. That supports a meaningful improvement, but it remains one laboratory result rather than a guarantee for every owner.

4. IP57 makes Pro 3 more reassuring outdoors

AirPods Pro 3 earbuds and case carry an IP57 rating. AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C are rated IP54, while the original Lightning version is rated IPX4. In practical terms, Pro 3 offers better protection against dust and water exposure, making it the more sensible choice for sweaty workouts, dusty environments, and rainy commutes.

None of these products is waterproof. IP57 does not make Pro 3 suitable for swimming, showering, or deliberate submersion. Water resistance is tested under controlled laboratory conditions and decreases with normal wear. Dry the earbuds and case thoroughly before charging; Apple specifically warns against charging wet AirPods. The relevant technical details are in Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 specifications and AirPods Pro 2 USB-C specifications.

Heart-rate tracking: useful fitness hardware, not a universal upgrade

Pro 3 adds in-ear optical heart-rate sensors that use photoplethysmography. When connected to an iPhone, the sensors can work with the Fitness app and supported third-party workout apps. Apple says the data can be combined with motion, GPS, and Health information to calculate workout metrics such as calories, steps, and distance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use it with Apple’s Fitness app:

  1. Connect AirPods Pro 3 to an iPhone and wear at least one earbud.
  2. Open Fitness.
  3. Tap Workout and start a workout.
  4. View heart rate during the session and review saved data later in Health > Search > Heart > Heart Rate.

Heart-rate monitoring is enabled by default. To disable it, connect and wear Pro 3, open Settings, tap the AirPods name near the top, and turn off Heart Rate. Apple’s heart-rate support page says the workout experience requires an iPhone running iOS 26 or later.

The feature is most valuable for an iPhone user who exercises but does not wear an Apple Watch. If you already wear an Apple Watch, Pro 3 can still provide a second source, but Apple says the system automatically uses the higher-confidence source at a given moment. That makes heart-rate sensing less compelling as an upgrade reason for Apple Watch owners.

A good seal and consistent skin contact matter. Readings can become inconsistent if the earbuds shift, particularly during vigorous exercise. Health profile information such as age, height, weight, and sex should be current, and third-party workout apps need permission to read the relevant Apple Health data. Pro 3 is a workout accessory with an in-ear heart-rate sensor—not a medical-grade heart monitor.

Live Translation and hearing features are not Pro 3 exclusives

Live Translation works on updated Pro 2

Live Translation is not a reason by itself to replace AirPods Pro 2. Apple’s current support documentation lists both Pro 2 and Pro 3 as compatible, provided the connected iPhone and software meet the requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need:

  • iPhone 15 Pro or later.
  • iOS 26 or later.
  • Apple Intelligence enabled.
  • Apple’s Translate app.
  • Current AirPods firmware.
  • The required language models downloaded.
  • A supported language and region.

To set it up, connect the AirPods and go to Settings > AirPods name > Translation > Languages. Download the necessary languages, open the Translate app, tap Live, choose the other person’s language and your translation language, then tap Start Translation. You can also start it with Siri or by pressing and holding both AirPods stems at the same time. Apple cautions that generative translation can be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive, so it should not replace a professional interpreter in medical, legal, or other high-stakes situations. See Apple’s Live Translation requirements and setup instructions.

Hearing and accessibility features remain broadly shared

Pro 2 also supports Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Volume, Voice Isolation, Studio-quality recording, Camera remote control, sleep-related audio pause, Spatial Audio, and dynamic head tracking with compatible software. Apple’s Hearing Aid support documentation covers both Pro 2 and Pro 3 compatibility where applicable.

That software parity is important for owners who have read launch coverage describing these capabilities as new. Pro 3’s exclusive advantages are primarily its sensors, physical design, battery, protection rating, case chip, and case controls—not the entire feature list shown in Apple’s current AirPods software.

Sound quality and calls: an improvement, but a matter of taste

Apple says Pro 3’s revised acoustic architecture and Adaptive EQ produce stronger bass, a wider soundstage, and clearer high-frequency vocals. Independent testing supports a change in presentation, but not a universal verdict that Pro 3 sounds better for every listener.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SoundGuys found broadly similar overall performance, with Pro 3 showing more treble extension while Pro 2 measured with slightly more bass in its testing. RTINGS characterized Pro 3 as having more bass and brighter treble, while Pro 2 came across as smoother and more conservative.

The most accurate description is that Pro 3 tends to sound more energetic and spacious. Pro 2 may be preferable if you like a warmer, smoother, less bright presentation. Neither model offers a conventional manual equalizer in iOS Settings; listeners mainly rely on Adaptive EQ and system-level audio controls. Sound quality alone is therefore a weak reason for a satisfied Pro 2 owner to upgrade.

Independent microphone testing generally favors Pro 3. SoundGuys found an improvement over Pro 2, and Tom’s Guide reported clearer calls in busy environments, including with Voice Isolation. RTINGS also found Pro 3’s microphone worked better with Apple devices than with its standardized PC testing setup. Call quality still depends on the paired device, operating system, application, network, and voice-processing settings, so Pro 3 should not be described as universally the best microphone on every phone and computer.

The case changes are easy to overlook

Pro 3 case

  • USB-C charging.
  • MagSafe, Qi, and Apple Watch charging support.
  • Built-in speaker for Find My.
  • Second-generation Ultra Wideband chip.
  • Touch-sensitive front area for pairing and resetting.
  • Slightly larger but lighter than the Pro 2 USB-C case.

Pro 2 USB-C case

  • USB-C, MagSafe, Qi, and Apple Watch charging support.
  • Built-in Find My speaker.
  • First-generation U1 Ultra Wideband chip.
  • Physical setup button on the rear.
  • Slightly smaller but heavier than the Pro 3 case.

The newer Ultra Wideband hardware can make locating the Pro 3 case more precise with compatible Apple devices. It is a convenience upgrade, not a change to audio quality. The most visible day-to-day change is the control method: Pro 3 has no rear physical setup button.

How to pair Pro 3 if the animation does not appear

  1. Put both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
  2. Hold the case near the device.
  3. Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
  4. Open Bluetooth settings and select AirPods Pro 3.

This process applies when pairing with an iPhone, Mac, Apple TV, or another Bluetooth device and the normal setup animation does not appear. Apple documents the process in its AirPods pairing guide.

How to factory-reset Pro 3

  1. Place both earbuds in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
  2. If needed, forget the AirPods under Settings > Bluetooth.
  3. Open the lid.
  4. Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on.
  5. Double-tap again when the light flashes white.
  6. Double-tap a third time when the light flashes faster.
  7. Wait for the light to flash amber and then white.
  8. Reconnect the AirPods.

Apple’s reset instructions describe the timing and light sequence. If you are looking for a rear button on Pro 3, you will not find one.

Do you have the right Pro 2 comparison model?

There are two materially different AirPods Pro 2 versions:

  • AirPods Pro 2 with Lightning: Introduced in 2022, uses a Lightning case, carries an IPX4 rating, and does not support the USB-C version’s Vision Pro lossless and ultra-low-latency audio mode.
  • AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C: Introduced in 2023, uses USB-C, carries an IP54 rating, and supports lossless, ultra-low-latency audio with Apple Vision Pro.

Apple’s specifications for the Lightning model and USB-C model should be checked if you are buying discounted or refurbished stock. A product listing that simply says AirPods Pro 2 may not tell you which case is included.

Vision Pro owners: Pro 3 is not a major audio upgrade from USB-C Pro 2

AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C both support Apple’s lossless, ultra-low-latency wireless audio mode with Apple Vision Pro. This is a specialized Vision Pro feature, not general lossless Bluetooth audio from an iPhone, Android phone, Mac, or other ordinary Bluetooth source.

That means the upgrade decision is different for Vision Pro owners:

  • If you own USB-C Pro 2, Pro 3 does not add Vision Pro lossless support. Upgrade only for its ANC, fit, battery, IP57 protection, heart-rate hardware, or newer case.
  • If you own Lightning Pro 2, Pro 3 adds USB-C and retains Vision Pro compatibility, so the case and connectivity upgrade is more meaningful.

See Apple’s Vision Pro headphone compatibility guidance and lossless-audio instructions for the supported setup.

Who should upgrade from AirPods Pro 2?

  • Frequent flyers and commuters: Pro 3’s stronger ANC is the most immediately noticeable upgrade in loud environments.
  • Runners and gym users: The redesigned fit, additional XXS tip, IP57 protection, and built-in heart-rate sensor are useful if Pro 2 shifts or if you train with an iPhone rather than an Apple Watch.
  • Owners with aging batteries: Pro 3’s up-to-eight-hour ANC rating is a substantial practical improvement over a well-used Pro 2 that now needs frequent charging.
  • Users dissatisfied with Pro 2’s seal: The new geometry and foam-infused tips may solve a fit problem, although the deeper fit could have the opposite effect for some ears.
  • Lightning-case owners moving to USB-C: Pro 3 provides USB-C, IP57, and the newer case hardware in one purchase.
  • People who frequently use Find My: The second-generation Ultra Wideband case chip is intended to improve precision finding with compatible Apple hardware.
  • Buyers choosing new at roughly $249: With no meaningful price penalty, there is little reason to choose the older generation unless you specifically prefer its fit or sound.

Who should keep or buy AirPods Pro 2?

  • Happy Pro 2 owners: If the earbuds are comfortable, stable, and quiet enough, the new model does not change the core listening experience enough to demand replacement.
  • Apple Watch owners who do not need another heart-rate source: The Pro 3 sensor is less valuable when your watch already supplies dependable workout tracking.
  • Listeners who prefer a smoother sound: Pro 2 may be a better match than Pro 3’s more energetic and brighter presentation.
  • Users who prefer a shallow fit: Pro 3’s deeper seating can be uncomfortable for people who like the way Pro 2 sits.
  • People who value case endurance: Pro 2’s 30-hour total rating with ANC beats Pro 3’s 24-hour rating.
  • Vision Pro owners with USB-C Pro 2: You already have the relevant lossless, low-latency Vision Pro capability.
  • Value-focused buyers: A deeply discounted, genuine Pro 2 with a healthy battery can be a better buy than Pro 3.

How cheap must Pro 2 be to beat Pro 3 on value?

There is no official Apple value threshold, but this is a useful buying rule:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Observed prices Better value decision
Pro 3 at $249; Pro 2 around $200 Choose Pro 3 in most cases. The $49 difference is small relative to the hardware improvements.
Pro 3 at $199; Pro 2 at $150–$170 Pro 2 becomes compelling if you do not need stronger ANC, IP57, heart-rate sensing, or the newer fit.
Pro 3 discounted to around $189 Pro 2 needs to be meaningfully below that price to justify its older battery, case, and resistance specifications.
Used or refurbished Pro 2 Prioritize battery health, return rights, warranty, seller reliability, and counterfeit risk over the specification table.

The exact cutoff changes with sales. A $30 or $40 difference normally favors Pro 3; a large discount can make Pro 2 the rational choice. Before buying remaining stock, confirm whether it has a USB-C or Lightning case and whether the seller is authorized or offers dependable returns.

Troubleshooting common objections

My Pro 3 ANC does not seem dramatically better

Check the tip size and seal in each ear, clean the earbuds, inspect the foam-infused tips for tears, and verify that full Noise Cancellation is selected rather than Adaptive Audio. A poor seal can erase much of the hardware advantage. Earwax and debris can also affect ANC, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio.

Heart-rate readings are missing or inconsistent

Make sure at least one AirPod is worn, Pro 3 is connected, and the iPhone runs iOS 26 or later. Try a different tip for more consistent skin contact. Check that your Health profile has current age, height, weight, and sex information, and that the workout app has permission to read Apple Health data. Third-party support depends on the individual app.

Live Translation does not work

Confirm that you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence enabled, the Translate app installed, current AirPods firmware, and both required language models downloaded. Availability also depends on supported languages and regions. Pro 2 can use Live Translation too; upgrading to Pro 3 will not solve a missing iPhone or software requirement.

I cannot find the Pro 3 setup button

There is no rear physical button. Use the touch-sensitive front of the case: double-tap it to enter pairing mode, and follow the three-stage double-tap sequence in Apple’s reset procedure for a factory reset.

Pro 3 has less total battery than Pro 2

That is correct. Pro 3 lasts longer per earbud charge but is rated for 24 total hours with ANC, compared with 30 hours for Pro 2. Decide whether your priority is uninterrupted individual sessions or the largest total reserve from the case.

Pro 3 is advertised as lossless from my iPhone

Do not interpret Vision Pro lossless support as unrestricted lossless Bluetooth playback from an iPhone. The special lossless, low-latency mode applies to Apple Vision Pro with compatible AirPods.

What about Android and other alternatives?

Both AirPods Pro generations can function as Bluetooth earbuds with Android, but Apple-specific features, app integration, firmware management, and codec support make neither model an especially strong Android value. Android users should compare models that offer a full companion app and broader platform support.

Possible alternatives include:

Those alternatives are not automatic upgrades over Pro 3. They are relevant when you use Android, want more equalizer control, need a different fit, or do not rely on Apple’s ecosystem. A broader comparison is available in Tom’s Guide’s AirPods alternatives guide.

Final recommendation

For a new Apple user buying near the $249 reference price, choose AirPods Pro 3. Its stronger ANC, longer per-charge battery, redesigned fit options, IP57 protection, and newer case make it the more complete current product.

For an existing Pro 2 owner, upgrade only when one of those hardware changes solves a real problem. Frequent travelers, runners, users with deteriorating batteries, people who need better stability or durability, and iPhone users who want in-ear workout heart-rate data have a strong case for Pro 3. Owners who already like Pro 2’s fit and tuning, use an Apple Watch, or own USB-C Pro 2 for Vision Pro should generally keep what they have—especially if Pro 3’s price is not discounted.

Which AirPods Pro 2 version is better for Vision Pro?

The USB-C AirPods Pro 2 supports Apple Vision Pro lossless, ultra-low-latency audio. The 2022 Lightning version does not. AirPods Pro 3 also supports the Vision Pro feature.

Is AirPods Pro 3 waterproof?

No. Its IP57 rating makes the earbuds and case more dust- and water-resistant under controlled laboratory testing, but it is not a swimming rating. Do not charge the case or earbuds while wet.

Should Apple Watch owners buy AirPods Pro 3 for heart-rate tracking?

Usually not for that feature alone. Apple Watch owners already have a dedicated heart-rate source, and Apple says the system uses the higher-confidence source at a given moment. Pro 3 may still be worthwhile for stronger ANC, fit, battery, or IP57 protection.

The Bottom Line

Buy AirPods Pro 3 when the price gap is small. They are the better new purchase and the better upgrade for noisy travel, demanding workouts, aging Pro 2 batteries, unreliable fit, or a need for tougher protection. Keep or buy AirPods Pro 2 when it is substantially cheaper and its fit, sound, and case battery suit you. The model number alone is not a reason to upgrade, and Live Translation and hearing features are not Pro 3-only benefits.
