Series 8 introduced wrist-temperature sensing, Crash Detection for severe car crashes, and a Low Power Mode rated for up to 36 hours under specified conditions. Series 8 was an evolutionary update to the Series 7 design rather than a complete redesign. In 2026, it is a legacy model found mainly through used and third-party refurbished sellers, not Apple’s current new-watch lineup.

Apple’s launch announcement covered three different products. Series 8 was the mainstream model, the second-generation SE was the lower-cost option, and Ultra was the larger, rugged watch aimed at outdoor and endurance users.

Wrist-temperature sensing
Series 8 used two temperature sensors: one positioned near the wearer’s skin and another beneath the display. Apple said this arrangement helped reduce environmental influence on readings.

The sensor tracked changes in wrist temperature over time. Its main advertised use was retrospective ovulation estimates and advanced cycle tracking, rather than acting as a general-purpose thermometer. Results depended on consistent wear and Apple’s software and usage requirements.
This was not a medical thermometer or diagnostic system. Apple explicitly said the temperature feature was not a medical device and was not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent medical conditions. Crash Detection
Crash Detection combined an improved high-range accelerometer, gyroscope, and sensor-fusion algorithms to identify severe automobile crashes. Apple said the accelerometer was rated for up to 256 g-forces, but that specification is a sensor capability—not a guarantee that every collision will be detected.
If the wearer appeared unresponsive after a detected severe crash, the watch displayed an emergency-services interface and began a 10-second countdown. If the user did not respond, it could place an emergency call and share location information with emergency contacts. The call could use a nearby iPhone, depending on the situation.
Crash Detection was designed for severe car crashes, not every accident. Emergency calling, location sharing, cellular operation, and roaming depended on the region, connectivity, carrier, and supported setup. It was never a substitute for safe driving or emergency preparation.

Low Power Mode
Apple advertised up to 36 hours of battery life in Low Power Mode with an iPhone present. That figure should not be confused with normal all-purpose battery life: Series 8’s standard rating remained up to 18 hours.
Low Power Mode reduced functionality to extend runtime. Apple identified limitations including disabling the Always-On display and workout auto-start, along with restrictions on some heart-health notifications. The actual result depended on usage and Apple’s test assumptions.

International roaming
Supported cellular Series 8 models gained international roaming support in compatible countries and with participating carriers. A cellular watch did not automatically work with every carrier worldwide; buyers needed to verify country, carrier, plan, and model compatibility.
What stayed the same?
Series 8 retained much of the Series 7 experience:
- The familiar Apple Watch case design and Always-On Retina display.
- ECG, fall detection, Emergency SOS, and heart-rate features.
- A standard battery rating of up to 18 hours.
- Water resistance to 50 meters and IP6X dust resistance.
- GPS and optional GPS + Cellular configurations.
The official technical specifications list an always-on altimeter, compass, electrical and optical heart sensors, accelerometer, gyroscope, ambient-light sensor, and temperature sensing. The 41mm and 45mm cases differed in dimensions, weights, finishes, and display resolution, so those details should be checked against the specific configuration.
watchOS 9: what was hardware-specific?
Series 8 launched with watchOS 9, which brought new and more customizable watch faces such as Lunar and Metropolitan, sleep-stage tracking, workout updates and additional metrics, AFib History, and a Medications app.

Not all of these features were exclusive to Series 8. Apple announced watchOS 9 for Apple Watch Series 4 and later, with an iPhone 8 or later—or iPhone SE (second generation) or later—running iOS 16. Feature availability varied by device and region.

That distinction mattered to Series 7 owners: many software improvements arrived on their existing watches, while the exterior design and display experience remained broadly familiar.
Series 8 versus Series 7
Series 8’s meaningful advantages over Series 7 were concentrated in its new sensors, Crash Detection, and battery-management options. The design, case sizes, Always-On display, and core smartwatch experience changed comparatively little.
As an editorial judgment based on Apple’s feature list and compatibility information, the upgrade was strongest for someone who specifically valued cycle-tracking insights or Crash Detection. It was less compelling for a healthy Series 7 owner who mainly wanted the new watchOS 9 faces, workouts, sleep tracking, or Medications app, since those were not generally Series 8-exclusive.
Series 8 versus the second-generation SE
At launch, the second-generation Apple Watch SE started at $249 in the United States—$150 below Series 8. It included core activity tracking, heart-rate functions, Emergency SOS, and Crash Detection, but omitted premium hardware such as the Always-On display and ECG.

- Choose Series 8: if you want ECG, the Always-On display, wrist-temperature sensing, and the broader health feature set.
- Choose SE: if price matters more than those features and you mainly need activity tracking, notifications, and safety functions.
The SE was not a specification-for-specification replacement for Series 8.
Series 8 versus Apple Watch Ultra
Apple positioned Ultra as the adventure model, with a larger display, more rugged construction, and longer battery life for endurance athletes and outdoor users. Series 8 was the conventional everyday watch: smaller, lighter, and less specialized.
The 2022 lineup was therefore segmented rather than a choice between three versions of the same watch: SE prioritized price, Series 8 balanced mainstream features, and Ultra targeted demanding outdoor use.

Apple accepted Series 8 orders on September 7, 2022, and began retail availability on September 16. The U.S. starting price was $399 for the entry GPS aluminum configuration. Cellular, stainless-steel, larger, and otherwise upgraded configurations cost more. Regional pricing, taxes, carrier service, and configuration affected the final price.
Those are historical launch details, not current prices.

Buying Apple Watch Series 8 in 2026
Apple’s current U.S. store no longer lists Series 8 as a new model. Apple’s current lineup includes newer products such as Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch SE 3, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Hermès models. Series 8 is consequently most relevant as a used, open-box, or third-party refurbished purchase.
There is no single reliable current Series 8 price: value varies with case material, size, GPS or cellular connectivity, battery health, condition, accessories, and return protection. A used Series 8 makes sense only when its discount is substantial enough to outweigh those risks.
Used-buying checklist
- Check battery maximum capacity and whether it meets your expectations.
- Confirm the seller has removed Activation Lock.
- Verify that the cellular model works with your carrier and plan.
- Confirm the health features you want are available in your country.
- Check that the paired iPhone supports the intended watchOS version.
- Confirm the charger is included or budget for a compatible magnetic charger.
- Prefer a clear return window and documented refurbishment condition.
The original watchOS 9 requirement was an iPhone 8 or later, or iPhone SE (second generation) or later, running iOS 16. That was the launch-era requirement and should not be treated as the requirement for every later watchOS release.

Which Apple Watch should you buy?
As of 2026, the practical decision is less about whether Series 8 was good at launch and more about its price relative to current alternatives:
- Used Series 8: buy only at a large discount, especially if you specifically want ECG, an Always-On display, wrist-temperature sensing, and Crash Detection.
- Apple Watch SE 3: Apple’s current lower-cost option; the U.S. store listed it from $249 during the August 2026 research period. It is better suited to buyers who prioritize price and warranty over premium health hardware.
- Apple Watch Series 11: Apple’s current mainstream model; the U.S. store listed it from $399 during that period. It is the safer choice for buyers wanting a current product with direct Apple retail support.
- Apple Watch Ultra 3: aimed at outdoor and endurance users. Apple’s store displayed different starting figures depending on the listing and configuration, so check the live store page rather than relying on one universal price.
For compatible accessories, check Apple’s band page and charging-accessory page. Series 8 uses the 41mm and 45mm case-size family, but band size still needs to match the watch generation and case size.
Verdict
Apple Watch Series 8 was a solid but incremental 2022 update. Its case and display felt familiar, while wrist-temperature sensing, Crash Detection, and Low Power Mode addressed specific health, safety, and battery concerns. It was most attractive at launch to first-time buyers who wanted those additions; Series 7 owners had less reason to upgrade unless one of them mattered directly.
In 2026, treat Series 8 as a legacy bargain—not a current Apple retail model. Buy used only when the condition and price clearly beat a newer SE or justify giving up the support and warranty advantages of a current Series model.
