Apple released the third developer betas of watchOS 11.1, tvOS 18.1, and visionOS 2.1 on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. These were pre-release builds—not public final updates—and they arrived without matching iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia 15.1 betas. The builds are now historical: Apple shipped the three final updates on October 28, 2024.
Which builds did Apple release?
The October 1 releases were the third developer betas for each platform. Their build numbers, reported at the time, were:
| Platform | Release | Build |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | watchOS 11.1 beta 3 | 22R5559b |
| Apple TV | tvOS 18.1 beta 3 | 22J5557d |
| Apple Vision Pro | visionOS 2.1 beta 3 | 22N5558e |
AppleInsider’s October 1 report documented the releases and builds. A beta number identifies a stage of testing; it does not mean a build is stable or ready for everyday use.
Why were there no matching iPhone, iPad, or Mac betas?
Apple did not issue new iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia 15.1 betas in the same batch. Those releases had entered testing earlier in connection with the first Apple Intelligence features, while watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS were not part of that same rollout. The different timing suggests Apple was running partially separate beta schedules; Apple did not give an official explanation for the split.

9to5Mac’s September 17 report covered the earlier beta starts for the three platforms, and AppleInsider noted the October 1 gap. That context makes the missing companion releases notable, but it does not establish a formal Apple policy or motive.
Did beta 3 add new features?
At the time of release, no major new user-facing features had been identified in these third builds. That is not the same as saying there were no changes: betas can include bug fixes, developer-facing changes, known-issue updates, or less visible refinements. Apple’s beta guidance directs developers to platform release notes for changes, fixes, workarounds, deprecations, and known issues.

The broader major releases provide context, not proof of what beta 3 contained. watchOS 11 introduced Activity Ring customization, health and fitness capabilities, and watch-face personalization; visionOS 2 brought improvements including spatial-photo and gesture enhancements. The October 1 reporting did not identify a comparable headline addition for tvOS 18.1.

watchOS 11.1 beta 3
- On the paired iPhone, open Apple Watch → My Watch → General → Software Update → Beta Updates, then select the developer beta.
- Keep the iPhone and watch near each other, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi, and put the watch on its charger or ensure it has at least 50 percent charge, as Apple advises.
A compatible iPhone and Apple Watch pairing is required; the watch beta is not installed independently of the paired-phone setup. A beta may not appear if the phone’s software is incompatible or enrollment is incomplete.
tvOS 18.1 beta 3
On an enrolled Apple TV, use its software-update workflow when the beta update option is available. Developer testing may instead use Apple’s configuration-profile process. The eventual tvOS 18.1 release supported Apple TV HD and all Apple TV 4K models, according to Apple’s release information; that final-release compatibility does not by itself guarantee beta availability on every setup.

On Apple Vision Pro, go to Settings → General → Software Update → Beta Updates. The headset must be signed in with the Apple Account associated with the Apple Developer website. Apple also provides a restore-image route involving a Mac, Apple Configurator, a Developer Strap, and a restore image; restoring erases the device.
For enrollment details and platform-specific steps, consult Apple’s beta installation guidance. If an update does not show, check enrollment and account, confirm compatibility, restart and check again, then verify the platform-specific requirements—such as the watch’s paired iPhone or the Apple TV beta setting. These checks may help identify a setup issue but do not guarantee the update will appear.

Should you install a beta on a device you rely on?
These builds were most useful for developers testing apps and organizations checking compatibility before wider deployment. For ordinary users, no identified headline feature made beta 3 an obvious reason to accept the reliability risks. Apple warns that beta software can contain bugs and recommends backing up before installation.
- Test on secondary hardware rather than a primary or mission-critical device where possible.
- Expect possible app, streaming, or device reliability problems; Apple TV betas may affect streaming and app behavior.
- Take particular care with Apple Watch: downgrading watchOS is harder than downgrading iOS, iPadOS, or macOS, and a failed update may require Apple service or a later update to resolve.
- Understand that Vision Pro restore procedures can erase content, and have a backup before attempting a restore.
A beta label—even “beta 3”—does not rule out regressions. Review Apple’s current installation and backup guidance before testing.
When did the final updates arrive?
Apple released the final watchOS 11.1, tvOS 18.1, and visionOS 2.1 updates on October 28, 2024. Apple lists watchOS 11.1 for Apple Watch Series 6 and later, tvOS 18.1 for Apple TV HD and all Apple TV 4K models, and visionOS 2.1 for Apple Vision Pro in its release information. This October 1 beta story is therefore historical, not a notice that these beta builds are newly available.
