Apple was still testing visionOS 1.2 as beta 5, not an RC. An RC is typically the final beta before a major release, but developers should treat it as test software and check their apps before the public update arrives.
Which Apple platforms received an RC?
| Platform | Status reported on May 8, 2024 | Who the build was for |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 17.5 | Release candidate | Developers and beta testers |
| iPadOS 17.5 | Release candidate | Developers and beta testers |
| watchOS 10.5 | Release candidate | Developers and beta testers |
| tvOS 17.5 | Release candidate | Developers and beta testers |
| visionOS 1.2 | Beta 5, not an RC | Beta testers |
Apple’s earlier April 5 developer announcement had listed beta versions of iOS 17.5, iPadOS 17.5, macOS 14.5, tvOS 17.5, visionOS 1.2 and watchOS 10.5. The May 8 report did not list macOS 14.5 among that day’s RC builds, so it should not be included in the rollout summary.
What a release candidate means
Apple Developer Support says an RC build is “typically the final beta before a major release.” That makes an RC a late-stage test build, not the same thing as a public customer update. Apple asks developers to use pre-release software to check that their apps work as expected.
The May 8 RC announcement was therefore mainly relevant to developers and beta testers preparing for the public releases. Apple’s security release listing later recorded watchOS 10.5 for Apple Watch Series 4 and later on May 13, 2024. The listing also records iOS 17.5.1 as a subsequent update on May 20, 2024.

What developers should check
Apple’s iOS and iPadOS 17.5 release notes cover API changes, resolved issues, known issues, workarounds and deprecations. They identify Xcode 15.4 as the bundled SDK environment. Review the notes for each platform your app supports rather than assuming that one platform’s changes apply to all the others.
One specific compatibility caveat in Apple’s notes concerns affected apps built with SDKs prior to iOS 17.5 and watchOS 10.5: if their property lists lack the NSMotionUsageDescription string, they will not receive data. This warning is limited to apps meeting those conditions; it is not a general instruction for every developer to change every app.

Suggested preparation steps
- Read the release notes for each platform your app supports, including known issues and workarounds.
- Install the relevant pre-release build in a test environment and check app compatibility.
- Check whether the NSMotionUsageDescription caveat applies to your app and its SDK build.
- Keep using the public release, rather than the RC, on devices where you do not want to test preview software.
Feature context, separate from the RC announcement
Contemporaneous reporting described EU web-based app distribution and Apple News+ changes among iOS 17.5’s features, and a 2024 Pride watch face among watchOS 10.5’s features. These are background on the software versions; the May 8 RC announcement does not establish that the features were introduced specifically in those RC builds.

Should developers install the iOS 17.5 release candidate?
Developers who need to test compatibility can use pre-release software for that purpose, while reviewing Apple’s platform-specific release notes. An RC is still test software, so it is not the default choice for devices that need to remain on a public release.
