The MING 27.01 Ultra Thin was the first watch to introduce the brand’s second-generation design language. Launched in 2020 as an evolution of the 17-series, it kept familiar cues such as radial symmetry, a zero marker at 12 o’clock and flared lugs, while adding flying-blade lugs and a thinner, more layered case and dial. MING’s archived product page now lists the watch as sold out and says it will not be produced again.
What does MING’s second-generation design language mean?
MING presented the 27.01 as a refinement of its original 17-series design, not a break from it. In the brand’s design essay, signed “MT” and dated 30 May 2020, it says: “Our design philosophy has always been reductivist; design language 2 takes this further from the base of the original 17-series.” The maker identifies the 17.01 and 17.06 as points of reference, and says the 27.01 shares much of the 17.03/17.06 case plan.
The retained visual grammar includes radial symmetry, a “0” at 12, flared lugs and an easy-to-wind crown. MING’s archive also describes mixed finishes and layered visual effects as recurring principles: details are arranged to make a watch appear deeper or shallower than its physical dimensions suggest. The 27.01 added the “flying blade” lug treatment to that language. Its reference number, according to the design essay, means “DL2, series 7, model 01.” MING’s design essay explains these choices in the maker’s own terms.
How did the 27.01 apply that language to the case?
The official product specification gives the stainless-steel case a 38 mm diameter and 6.9 mm thickness. MING describes its surfaces as polished, brushed and blasted, with sapphire crystals on both sides and double-sided anti-reflective coating. The published water-resistance rating is 50 m. These are maker-published specifications, not independent measurements or test results. The archived product page contains the complete specification.

The flying-blade lugs build on the familiar flared shape by removing material from the case periphery and extending hollows through the lugs. MING says this demanded challenging machining; its design essay specifies only 0.8 mm of material at the top and bottom lug surfaces. That figure describes those surfaces, not the thickness of the whole case.
What is distinctive about the dial and hands?
The dial’s alternating marker pattern develops ideas used on the 17.03 Blue and 17.06. Even markers use double lines and odd markers use single lines, with a ring connecting the pattern. A lighter chapter ring and deeply etched indices create a floating, layered impression reminiscent of earlier 17-series watches, but without their sapphire “donut.”

The hands continue a design introduced in the 19 series. On the 27.01, they have no luminous material, and the minute hand has a distinguishing tip. MING’s description presents these details as part of the watch’s visual design; it does not claim a measured legibility advantage.
Which movement powers the MING 27.01?
The watch uses MING’s 7001.M1, a heavily modified ETA 7001. MING says the movement starts with the ETA Peseux 7001 and retains its gear train and escapement, while Manufacture Schwarz-Etienne remade the bridges and plates to MING’s configuration. The bridges and plates are black chrome plated. The maker lists an approximately 42-hour power reserve at full wind; this is a published specification, not an independently tested result.

How do the strap and buckle fit the design?
MING specified a 20 mm-wide smooth calf strap by Jean Rousseau Paris, fitted with curved quick-release bars, and a second-generation flying-blade stainless-steel buckle. The design essay says the supplied strap is thinner and describes the buckle as echoing the lugs while reducing strap-bending stress. These are the manufacturer’s design descriptions, not a guarantee that any generic 20 mm replacement strap will fit the curved-bar interface.
The product specification also lists a handmade leather travel pouch by Studio Koji Sato. MING gives the watch’s weight as 53 g with the strap and 37 g without it.

When was it released, and can you still buy one from MING?
MING’s announcement, published 15 April 2020, said the 27.01 would launch on Friday, 1 May 2020 at 1 PM GMT, exclusively through ming.watch. The launch announcement records those original plans. The official archived product page now says the watch is sold out, deliveries are complete and it will not be produced again. That is its current status at the maker, not evidence that every third-party listing is authorized, authentic or available.
MING’s official pages do not state a production total or sales figure. Sold-out status should not be treated as a production statistic.
