Apple’s redesigned Blood Oxygen experience is available to some U.S. Apple Watch owners, but the watch does not perform the final analysis: the paired iPhone does, and results appear in the iPhone Health app. Check your watch’s purchase date, part number, model, and region; the Series name alone does not establish eligibility.
Apple introduced the redesign on August 14, 2025, for some U.S. Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 owners whose watches did not have the original feature. At launch it required iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1; Apple Support now advises using the latest compatible software. Apple’s announcement and current support instructions explain the experience.
How the U.S. Blood Oxygen experience works
For affected U.S. watches, the watch collects sensor data and the paired iPhone analyzes it. Find results in the iPhone Health app by opening Search → Respiratory → Blood Oxygen. A second iPhone that is not paired with the watch cannot perform the analysis.
Apple says the redesign did not affect watches previously purchased with the original Blood Oxygen feature or Apple Watch units purchased outside the United States. Availability still depends on the watch, its region and part number, and compatible software.

Which Apple Watches should you check?
Apple Support describes Blood Oxygen availability for Apple Watch Series 6 or later and all Apple Watch Ultra models, subject to country or region availability. Apple excludes Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch For Your Kids. For U.S. watches purchased on or after January 18, 2024, Apple identifies models with part numbers ending in LW/A or LS/A as using iPhone-side analysis.

To check a watch, look up its model and part number in the device information and compare them with Apple’s current support guidance. Do not assume that every watch with the same Series name has the same regional configuration or processing behavior.

How to take a Blood Oxygen reading
- Update the paired iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest compatible iOS and watchOS. The 2025 launch used iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1; those are historical launch versions, not the current update recommendation.
- Open the Blood Oxygen app on the watch.
- Wear the watch snugly but comfortably, and keep your wrist flat.
- Stay still and hold your arm steady for the 15-second on-demand measurement.
- On the paired iPhone, open Health and choose Search → Respiratory → Blood Oxygen to view results and history.
Apple says background readings may also be collected. Their number and spacing vary with activity; readings during sleep require Track Sleep with Apple Watch to be enabled. Do not expect a fixed schedule or a successful reading on every attempt.
If a reading does not complete
Apple notes that a reliable reading may not be possible every time. Movement, cold-related low skin perfusion, some tattoos, poor fit, certain postures, and a resting heart rate above 150 bpm can prevent a successful measurement.
- Check that the watch is snug but comfortable and properly in contact with your skin.
- Keep your wrist flat, hold your arm steady, and stay still for the full measurement.
- Confirm that the watch and paired iPhone have the latest compatible software.
- Check the model, region, purchase circumstances, and part number against Apple’s support guidance.
- Look in the paired iPhone’s Health app under Search → Respiratory → Blood Oxygen.
If the feature is still unavailable, consult Apple’s Blood Oxygen support page before assuming there is a hardware fault.

What does the Health app show?
In Health, Apple provides daily, weekly, monthly, and six-month views, and lets users filter readings taken during sleep or at high elevation. Those views do not mean readings are continuous or arrive at predictable intervals.
Apple says 95–100% is the range for the majority of people, while also noting that some people normally live below 95% and readings can be lower during sleep. This is Apple’s contextual information, not a universal threshold or a basis for medical decisions. Apple also says the app is designed for people at least 18 years old.
What should buyers look for now?
Apple announced Apple Watch Series 12 on September 9, 2026, with U.S. availability beginning September 18 and a U.S. starting price of $399. Apple’s broad support guidance covers Series 6 or later and Ultra models, but U.S. purchase-date, part-number, and regional qualifications still matter. Confirm the exact unit’s eligibility and current listing before buying. Apple’s Series 12 product information has current product details.
