Apple is reportedly exploring camera-equipped Apple Watch models for visual AI, but it has not announced a Watch with a camera or confirmed a release date. The original report appeared in March 2025, so its roughly two-year development window points to around 2027—not a guaranteed launch. Apple Intelligence-related features are already coming to certain Watches through a paired iPhone; a built-in camera would be a separate, more ambitious step.

What the Apple Watch camera rumor actually says

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in March 2025 that Apple was working on turning its watches into AI wearables with built-in cameras. Bloomberg later described a broader Apple push toward “visual artificial intelligence” in wearables. Those reports make a camera-equipped Watch a credible possibility, not a product announcement. Bloomberg’s March 24, 2025 report; Bloomberg’s March 30, 2025 newsletter; Bloomberg’s February 22, 2026 newsletter.

The likely idea is to let a wearer ask an AI system about something in view without first taking out an iPhone. Bloomberg’s reporting does not establish a product name, a final design, technical specifications, or which features Apple might ship. There is no confirmed “Series 13,” “Ultra 5,” or other camera model.

What might a Watch camera be useful for?

Visual AI could let a user point their wrist toward something and ask Siri for context. Possible uses include identifying objects or plants, reading a sign or label, interpreting a scene, translating visible text, or getting accessibility assistance. These are plausible applications of visual AI, not confirmed Apple Watch features.

Apple already offers camera-based intelligence on iPhone and is extending Apple Intelligence across its devices. That makes visual queries a reasonable possibility, but Apple has not said that a future Watch camera will support any particular task. Apple’s overview of Apple Intelligence features; Apple’s June 2026 announcement.

A camera would not automatically make the Watch a replacement for an iPhone camera. A small display, wrist movement, framing, lighting, and the distance to a subject could make capture and review less convenient. The Watch might be best suited to quick questions, with a paired iPhone handling more detailed results, text entry, or image work.

Apple Intelligence is not waiting two years to reach Watch

Apple announced in June 2026 that Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features would support certain Apple Watch models running watchOS 27 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Apple also lists Workout Buddy for selected newer models, with a compatible iPhone and Bluetooth headphones or speakers. This is paired-device functionality, not evidence that a camera-equipped Watch is imminent. Apple’s watchOS 27 announcement; Apple’s feature overview.

Apple’s June newsroom material names Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, and SE 3 for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI support when paired with a compatible iPhone. Its support page gives a broader list—Series 6 and later, all Ultra models, and SE 2 and later—for Apple Intelligence-related functionality. The pages appear to describe different feature or software scopes, so do not assume every AI feature works on every listed Watch. Where could Apple put a camera?

Apple has not disclosed a placement. Each conceivable location brings different compromises; these are design possibilities, not reported specifications.

Possible placement Potential benefit Main trade-offs
Display or bezel Could point generally in the wearer’s direction and allow quick visual queries. Very little space, awkward framing from a moving wrist, and possible effects on display design, case thickness, durability, and repairability.
Outward-facing case Could be aimed by turning or positioning the wrist and may be easier to integrate than a camera behind the display. May require an unnatural wrist position; could be blocked by clothing or the wearer’s body and raise privacy concerns.
Band Could provide more room for optics and components or a different viewing angle. Makes the feature dependent on a particular band, complicates compatibility, and adds risks of loss, damage, or replacement cost.

Why Apple might want visual AI on a wearable

A camera could give an AI system visual context without requiring the user to hold up a phone. That fits Bloomberg’s description of Apple’s wearable ambitions as a push toward visual AI and Apple’s own expansion of Apple Intelligence and Siri across platforms. It does not establish that Apple has settled on a Watch camera as the way to deliver that strategy.

Nor would a camera necessarily mean all AI processing happens on the Watch. A future system could capture an image on the Watch, use the paired iPhone for some processing, and rely on Apple’s servers for other tasks. Apple’s published foundation-model research describes both on-device and server-based models, but it does not confirm how a camera-equipped Watch would work. Privacy and social acceptance

A camera on the wrist raises questions beyond the wearer’s convenience. Bystanders may not know when it is active, and workplaces, schools, medical facilities, and secure sites may prohibit cameras. Apple has not announced whether it would use a recording indicator, shutter sound, hardware privacy control, or any particular image-storage policy. Those would be important design questions, not features to assume.

Battery and ergonomics

Capturing images, transferring them wirelessly, and running AI could use more power than routine notifications or fitness tracking, but no battery impact has been established. Wrist angle, sleeve coverage, gloves, lighting, and movement could also make a watch camera less reliable than a phone camera for some tasks. Apple has published no camera-model battery figures or operating details.

Phone dependence

Today’s Watches require an iPhone for setup, and Apple’s AI-related Watch features have paired-iPhone conditions. A camera on the Watch would not, by itself, prove that the device could act as a standalone AI computer. Apple’s current purchase information says Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Apple Watch buying and compatibility information.

Does the rumor point to a 2027 Apple Watch?

Two years after Bloomberg’s March 2025 reporting is roughly March 2027. That is a reasonable way to interpret the reported development window, but it does not set a launch date. A development project could ship later, change form, or never reach customers; no keynote, model generation, or shipping schedule has been confirmed.

As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s official lineup is Apple Watch Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3, and Apple’s listings do not advertise a camera on those models. Apple Watch lineup; Apple’s current Watch specifications.

Buy an Apple Watch now or wait?

Your situation Practical choice
You need health, fitness, safety, sleep, or cellular features now, or your current Watch is failing. Buy a current model for the features Apple actually sells today.
Your current Watch works well and the camera is your main reason to upgrade. Wait for an announcement or more concrete specifications; the timing and design remain uncertain.
You want visual AI specifically. Wait if you mean a camera built into the Watch. Apple’s paired-iPhone AI features are a separate, already-announced path.
You want to take photographs or video. Do not buy a Watch based on this rumor; no camera Watch has been announced.
You expect an independent AI device that does not rely on an iPhone. Wait for confirmed connectivity and processing details rather than inferring independence from the camera report.

For buyers who want a Watch now, Apple’s U.S. store lists SE 3 from $249, Series 11 from $399, and Ultra 3 from $799. Choose among them for their current features and your budget; none includes an advertised camera. Prices are U.S. starting prices shown on Apple’s store and can vary by configuration or location.
