The main difference is connectivity away from your iPhone: GPS + Cellular can connect to a supported mobile network with an eligible active plan, while GPS relies on a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection to the iPhone for calls, messages, and notifications. Both versions have built-in GPS for workout distance, pace, and route mapping, so cellular is not needed for independent GPS workout tracking. Choose GPS if your iPhone is usually nearby; consider GPS + Cellular if you often leave it behind and want supported communication or data services.

What GPS means on Apple Watch
“GPS” refers to satellite positioning for location and workouts. It does not mean that the watch only works when connected to satellites, nor does it mean the watch needs cellular service to track an outdoor workout.
Apple says the built-in GPS works independently of the iPhone for distance, pace, and route mapping in workouts. GPS + Cellular models also have GPS; the cellular radio adds another way to connect when the iPhone and Wi-Fi are unavailable.
How the connection works
Apple describes the watch as favoring the most power-efficient available connection: Bluetooth to a nearby iPhone, then compatible Wi-Fi, and cellular on GPS + Cellular models when the other connections are unavailable and service is set up.

- Always-on Retina display has nearly 20% more screen area than Series 6, making everything easier to see and use than ever before
- The most crack-resistant front crystal yet on an Apple Watch, IP6X dust resistance, and swimproof design just to name a few awesome features

A GPS watch is not a substitute for a mobile connection. For calls, messages, and notifications, Apple says it must be connected to the iPhone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. A cellular model can handle supported communication and data services over a mobile network, but service depends on the carrier, plan, coverage, and feature support.
Does GPS + Cellular need a plan?
The cellular hardware alone does not provide mobile service. To connect over a mobile network, the watch needs an eligible active plan from a supported carrier. Carrier availability, account eligibility, and charges vary, so check the carrier’s terms before buying or activating service. Prepaid and some older, corporate, or enterprise accounts may not qualify.
There is no universal cellular plan price or hardware surcharge. Compare the current price of the exact watch configuration with the carrier’s recurring charge for your account and region.
Regional compatibility matters
Apple says cellular Apple Watch models are optimized for the country where they are purchased, and no single model supports cellular service worldwide. Before buying a watch for use in another country, verify the exact model variant, the carrier’s Apple Watch support, and whether your plan and account are eligible.
Who should choose GPS?
GPS is a sensible choice if you usually keep your iPhone nearby, mainly want workout tracking, and do not need a mobile connection from the watch itself. You still get built-in GPS workout tracking without paying for cellular service.
Who should choose GPS + Cellular?
Consider GPS + Cellular if you routinely leave your iPhone behind and want to stay reachable or use supported data services. It is also required for Apple Watch For Your Kids, a managed setup for a family member without their own iPhone. An adult still needs an iPhone to set up and manage that watch, and the cellular plan is required.
