Apple Watch Non-Invasive Glucose Monitoring Project Reportedly Makes Progress—but It Is Not Here Yet

Apple reportedly moved its non-invasive glucose project to a new leader, suggesting progress—but no current Apple Watch measures glucose, and Series 12 has not been confirmed to add it.

Apple’s long-running non-invasive glucose-monitoring project reportedly has a new leader, but that does not mean Apple has announced a working sensor or a 2026 Apple Watch with blood-glucose monitoring. As of August 10, 2026, Apple has not announced a release date, Apple Watch model, clinical-trial results, accuracy figures, FDA submission, or regulatory clearance for a watch that measures glucose on its own.

The reported change is still potentially significant: oversight of the project has reportedly moved from platform-architecture chief Tim Millet to senior engineering leader Zongjian Chen. People inside Apple reportedly see the appointment as a sign that the work may be moving toward product engineering. That is an organizational signal—not proof that Apple has solved the difficult sensing, miniaturization, safety, or regulatory problems.

For now, an Apple Watch can display readings from a separately worn continuous glucose monitor such as Dexcom G7 or Abbott FreeStyle Libre. The external sensor measures the glucose; the Apple Watch does not.

What changed with Apple’s glucose-monitoring project?

According to reporting attributed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple shifted oversight of its non-invasive glucose-monitoring work from Tim Millet, Apple’s vice president of platform architecture, to Zongjian Chen, a senior engineering leader associated with Apple’s Advanced Technologies Group and hardware-development projects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9to5Mac’s summary of the report and MacRumors’ coverage describe the change as an encouraging internal development. The apparent implication is that Apple may be trying to move the project from exploratory research toward the engineering and commercialization work required for a consumer product.

That interpretation remains an inference. Apple has not publicly explained why the leadership changed, and the company has not said that Chen’s appointment reflects a technical breakthrough. A new project leader does not establish that the sensor is accurate enough for medical use, small enough for an Apple Watch, efficient enough for its battery, or ready for regulatory review.

Evidence check: The strongest current claim is that Apple reportedly changed project oversight. It is not that Apple has announced a glucose-sensing watch.

What Apple is reportedly trying to build

Reporting says Apple has been investigating an optical approach using lasers or specific wavelengths of light directed beneath the skin. Glucose absorbs some light, and the reflected signal could then be analyzed by algorithms to estimate glucose concentration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That description should be treated as reported technology, not confirmed Apple product architecture. Apple has not publicly specified the final wavelengths, optical components, calibration process, sampling rate, accuracy, intended medical use, or whether the system would work continuously.

It is also technically misleading to say that Apple is confirmed to be “reading blood directly through the wrist.” The reported approach appears to target glucose-related signals in interstitial fluid, the fluid surrounding cells beneath the skin. Existing continuous glucose monitors also measure interstitial glucose, but they use a filament or sensor inserted under the skin.

A more accurate description is:

Apple is reportedly developing a non-invasive optical system that could estimate glucose concentration beneath the skin and present the result as a glucose reading.

Interstitial glucose is closely related to blood glucose, but the two are not always identical. During rapid changes caused by meals, exercise, insulin, or stress, interstitial readings can lag behind or differ from capillary blood-glucose measurements. The FDA’s description of the Eversense CGM and its FreeStyle Navigator documentation provide context for this distinction.

Earlier reports suggested that Apple might eventually use the system to identify elevated glucose or possible prediabetes risk. That remains a reported possibility, not a confirmed Apple Watch feature or diagnostic capability. A risk notification would also be different from providing treatment-grade glucose measurements.

Apple’s reported glucose project timeline

Date Reported development What it does—and does not—prove
2017 Reports said Apple had assembled a small team of biomedical engineers in the Palo Alto area to work on non-invasive glucose monitoring intended eventually for a wearable. Evidence of a reported research effort, not evidence of a working consumer product. Axios reported on the project.
Steve Jobs era Later reporting described the project as dating back to the Steve Jobs era. This origin story relies on unnamed-source reporting. Apple has not publicly confirmed it.
2023 Bloomberg reporting said Apple’s Exploratory Design Group, or XDG, had reduced the technology to approximately the size of an iPhone-like device that could be worn on the arm. A larger proof of concept is not a watch-ready sensor. The remaining problems reportedly included shrinking the system substantially.
2023 onward After scientist Bill Athas died, the project was reportedly placed under Tim Millet following a period in which former deputies oversaw the work. This describes reported management history, not a public Apple product roadmap.
May 2026 Oversight reportedly moved from Millet to Zongjian Chen. An encouraging organizational signal, but not a disclosed technical milestone. Bloomberg Law summarized the earlier reporting.
July 2026 Later reporting said Apple could bring blood-sugar detection to market sometime later in the decade. This is a reported outlook, not an Apple commitment and not confirmation of an Apple Watch Series 12 feature. 9to5Mac’s Apple Watch roadmap report.
August 10, 2026 Apple’s public product pages still do not list standalone glucose measurement in the current Apple Watch health feature set. No announced glucose-sensing Apple Watch is available.

Older rumors have placed the feature on various Apple Watch generations and launch years, including 2025 and 2026. Those predictions should not be recycled as evidence. The more recent reporting points to a possible launch later in the decade, while also leaving open the possibility that the project will take longer—or never ship.

Why non-invasive glucose monitoring is so difficult

Putting a small optical sensor on a wrist is not enough. To be useful, a product would need to separate a very weak glucose-related signal from many stronger and constantly changing signals produced by the body and the environment.

1. The glucose signal is weak

Glucose produces a relatively small optical response compared with the effects of water, skin, tissue, blood flow, temperature, and other biological variables. Reviews of non-invasive glucose-monitoring research identify low signal-to-noise ratio and the difficulty of isolating glucose from confounding variables as central obstacles. See the reviews in non-invasive glucose-monitoring technologies and the 2025 workshop literature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An algorithm can compensate for some variables, but it cannot simply assume that every wrist has the same optical properties. A model trained on one population or controlled laboratory conditions may perform differently in everyday use.

2. The wrist is a difficult measurement site

A watch moves, changes position, and sits against skin with variable pressure. The sensor would have to deal with:

  • motion artifacts from walking, exercise, and ordinary hand movement;
  • changes in fit and contact pressure;
  • sweat and skin hydration;
  • ambient and skin temperature;
  • different levels of blood perfusion;
  • skin tone, tissue thickness, body composition, age, and other individual differences; and
  • scratches, dirt, hair, or changing placement over the sensor.

Optical wearable research identifies motion artifacts and precision as major challenges. A reading that works while someone is sitting still may not be equally reliable while that person is exercising or experiencing a rapid glucose change.

3. Interstitial glucose does not change exactly like blood glucose

Even established CGMs measure interstitial rather than directly sampled blood glucose. Their readings can show a delay during rapid rises and falls. A future Apple system would need to characterize and compensate for that behavior without using the subcutaneous sensor found in conventional CGMs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes the words “blood sugar monitoring” potentially confusing. They are commonly used in consumer headlines, but the reported Apple concept appears to estimate glucose beneath the skin rather than directly sample blood.

4. Medical decisions require dependable accuracy

A wellness trend estimate might help someone notice that a pattern deserves attention. It is a much higher bar to provide a number that a person can safely use to calculate insulin or adjust glucose-lowering medication.

The FDA warns that inaccurate values from unauthorized smartwatch or smart-ring products could lead to incorrect medication doses, severe hypoglycemia, coma, or death. Apple has released no public clinical-performance dataset for this project, so there is no verified Apple accuracy figure, MARD value, error-grid result, calibration requirement, or failure rate to report.

5. A prototype is not a medical product

Before a glucose feature could be trusted for medical use, Apple would need to demonstrate performance across a diverse population and real-world conditions. Readers should expect evidence addressing different skin tones, ages, body compositions, glucose ranges, temperatures, activity levels, and rates of glucose change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important questions would include:

  • What reference method was used to judge the readings?
  • How accurate are both glucose values and rising or falling trends?
  • How often does the system fail to produce a reading?
  • Does it require calibration with a meter or CGM?
  • How does it perform during exercise, sweating, temperature changes, or rapid glucose movement?
  • Can its alerts be delivered reliably enough for people who depend on hypoglycemia warnings?

None of those public performance details has been disclosed for Apple’s reported project.

6. Miniaturization, power, and heat

The reported prototype was much larger than a normal watch. Apple would need to shrink the optical source, detectors, signal-processing hardware, thermal-management components, and battery requirements while preserving enough signal quality to be useful.

The transfer to a hardware-development leader may relate to that commercialization challenge, but that is an inference rather than an explanation Apple has disclosed. A laboratory system that works at iPhone-like size is not automatically practical inside an Apple Watch.

Terminology: non-invasive, minimally invasive, and display-only

Finger-stick meter
Invasive blood sampling: the user punctures the skin and tests a blood droplet.
Continuous glucose monitor
Minimally invasive: a filament or sensor is inserted beneath the skin and measures glucose in interstitial fluid.
Apple’s reported project
Intended to be non-invasive, meaning no skin puncture, but not publicly demonstrated, clinically validated, or cleared as an Apple product.
Smartwatch wellness estimate
An indirect physiological estimate or risk assessment is not the same thing as a glucose measurement. It should not be used for diabetes treatment unless authorized for that purpose.

What an Apple Watch can do with glucose today

The closest current experience to “glucose on an Apple Watch” comes from pairing the watch with an external CGM. In these setups, the watch is a display and alert device. The sensor remains separately attached to the body and performs the measurement.

Experience Does the Apple Watch measure glucose? What is required?
Dexcom G7 Direct to Watch No A separately worn Dexcom G7 sensor and a compatible Apple Watch, iPhone, operating system, app, and region.
Abbott FreeStyle Libre app No A separately worn Libre sensor and compatible Abbott software and Apple Watch setup.
Manual glucose app No The user enters readings or imports them from another device. An App Store app cannot turn existing Apple Watch hardware into a glucose sensor.

Dexcom G7 Direct to Watch

Dexcom’s Direct to Watch mode allows a G7 sensor to send readings directly to a compatible Apple Watch over Bluetooth. Dexcom says the watch can show the current glucose reading, trend arrow, trend graph, and alerts without requiring the iPhone to remain nearby for ordinary viewing.

A compatible iPhone is still required to pair a new sensor. Dexcom’s setup instructions are:

  1. Install and configure the Dexcom G7 app on the iPhone.
  2. Open Connections.
  3. Choose Direct to Watch.
  4. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
  5. Confirm that the watch is receiving data directly from the sensor rather than merely mirroring the iPhone.

Use Dexcom’s Direct to Apple Watch guide for the current procedure. Compatibility changes over time; Dexcom’s live G7 compatibility page currently lists models including Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE 2 and SE 3, Series 10 and Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3, subject to the specified software and app requirements.

Direct-to-Watch mode can temporarily stop working. Dexcom uses an orange phone icon to indicate that the iPhone may need to be nearby again. The external sensor also penetrates the skin, so this is not a non-invasive Apple Watch solution.

Abbott FreeStyle Libre

Abbott’s Libre app supports glucose readings, trends, and notifications on Apple Watch within the relevant product ecosystem. The Libre sensor—not the watch—measures the glucose. Product, region, device, and software availability can change, so check Abbott’s current Apple Watch information.

Manual logging and imported data

Some Apple Watch apps allow users to record glucose manually or display data imported from an existing CGM. For example, App Store listings for glucose tracking and Glucowrist do not mean that the watch hardware is measuring glucose.

When an Apple Watch shows a glucose number, identify which of these four situations applies:

  • Built-in sensing: the watch itself measures glucose. No current Apple Watch does this.
  • External CGM display: a separately worn sensor sends data to the watch.
  • Manual logging: a user enters a number.
  • Prediction or risk assessment: an algorithm estimates risk without measuring glucose directly.

FDA warning: do not trust unauthorized watch-based glucose claims

In the United States, the FDA says it has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring intended to measure or estimate blood-glucose values on its own without piercing the skin. The agency distinguishes those products from smartwatch apps that display data generated by an authorized CGM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because inaccurate glucose values can affect medication decisions. The FDA’s February 21, 2024 safety communication warns consumers not to use unauthorized products that claim to measure glucose without skin penetration.

“Non-invasive” does not mean “risk-free.” A wrong number or missed alert could be dangerous even if the device never punctures the skin. The FDA has also warned that phone settings, software updates, hardware changes, and notification configurations can cause users to miss critical alerts from diabetes devices. Read the agency’s smartphone alert warning before relying on a phone-and-watch setup for urgent notifications.

What to do depending on your situation

If you need medically actionable glucose data

Use an FDA-authorized blood-glucose meter or CGM selected with a healthcare professional. Do not substitute an unapproved smartwatch, ring, or app that claims to measure glucose without a sensor penetrating the skin. The FDA’s blood-glucose monitoring device guidance is a useful starting point for understanding authorized devices.

If you already use a CGM

An Apple Watch may offer convenient readings and alerts through Dexcom or Abbott, depending on your Apple Watch model, operating system, app version, region, and sensor compatibility. It does not eliminate the external CGM sensor or turn the watch into a glucose meter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a CGM reading or alert does not match your symptoms or expectations, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Dexcom and other CGM providers direct users to confirm unexpected readings with an approved blood-glucose meter when appropriate. Do not make a medication decision based solely on a watch display that appears inconsistent with how you feel.

If you want wellness or prediabetes insight

A future Apple feature could plausibly begin as a trend, screening, or risk-notification tool rather than as a replacement for a CGM or meter. That may be a sensible product strategy, but Apple has not announced the intended indication, whether it would provide a glucose number, or what regulatory status it would seek.

If you are deciding whether to wait for Apple Watch Series 12

There is no reliable evidence that Apple Watch Series 12 will include glucose monitoring. July 2026 reporting about the upcoming Apple Watch lineup discusses health and fitness improvements but does not confirm glucose sensing. Separate reporting places Apple’s glucose work sometime later in the decade, not as a dependable 2026 launch feature.

Buy an Apple Watch for the capabilities Apple has actually announced. Do not purchase or postpone a medical device based on the assumption that Series 12 will measure glucose.

How to judge the next Apple glucose announcement

If Apple eventually announces this feature, look for evidence beyond the words “non-invasive” or “AI-powered.” A credible announcement should make clear:

  • what the watch actually measures and whether the result is a glucose value, a trend, or a risk estimate;
  • whether the measurement is intended for wellness, screening, diagnosis, or treatment decisions;
  • where the sensor measures—blood, interstitial fluid, or an indirect physiological signal;
  • how the system was clinically validated and against what reference method;
  • accuracy across glucose ranges, rates of change, skin tones, ages, body types, and activity conditions;
  • calibration requirements and how often readings fail;
  • battery, fit, temperature, and motion limitations;
  • how alerts work and what happens when the watch, phone, or connection is unavailable; and
  • the relevant regulatory clearance or authorization for the markets in which it is sold.

A patent is not enough. Apple or another company may patent optical, spectroscopic, or wearable glucose concepts without proving that the hardware works, that it is still under development, that it passed clinical testing, or that it will ship. The patent record itself illustrates why filings should not be treated as product announcements: US20220338765A1.

Competitor announcements also require careful reading. Huawei’s Diabetes Risk Study, for example, is described as a diabetes-risk assessment rather than a smartwatch that outputs a direct glucose number. It is not proof that a consumer smartwatch has solved non-invasive glucose measurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Apple Watch measure blood glucose by itself?

No. As of August 10, 2026, no current Apple Watch contains an Apple-built sensor that independently measures or estimates glucose. It can display readings from an external CGM such as Dexcom G7 or Abbott FreeStyle Libre, but the separately worn CGM performs the measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Apple Watch Series 12 have blood-glucose monitoring?

It has not been confirmed. July 2026 reporting discusses possible Apple health and fitness improvements but does not confirm glucose sensing. Other reporting places Apple’s project sometime later in the decade.

Is Dexcom Direct to Watch non-invasive?

The watch connection is wireless, but the overall system is not non-invasive: the Dexcom sensor is separately worn and penetrates the skin. The Apple Watch displays and alerts on data measured by that external sensor.

Can a smartwatch app measure glucose without a sensor?

An app can record manually entered values, import data from a CGM, or provide a risk estimate, but an app alone cannot make existing Apple Watch hardware measure glucose. In the United States, the FDA warns against unauthorized smartwatches or rings that claim to measure glucose without piercing the skin.

The Bottom Line

Apple may be making organizational progress on a difficult long-term glucose project, but the evidence still stops well short of a working, clinically validated, watch-sized product. The move from Tim Millet to Zongjian Chen is a reported leadership change, not a confirmed breakthrough. No current Apple Watch independently measures glucose, and Series 12 has not been confirmed to add the feature. For now, Apple Watch can display data from a compatible external CGM; anyone who needs medically actionable readings should use an authorized meter or CGM rather than an unapproved smartwatch claim.
