For most buyers, the Apple Watch Series 9 is the best balance of features, size and price. Choose the SE 2 only when it is substantially cheaper and you need basic smartwatch and fitness functions. Choose the Ultra 2 for multi-day battery life, bright outdoor visibility, rugged construction, precision GPS or diving features. If any of these older watches costs close to a current Apple Watch SE 3, Series 11 or Ultra 3, buy the newer model instead.
All three watches are previous-generation products as of August 16, 2026. They are now mainly found as refurbished, used, clearance or remaining-stock devices. Apple’s current comparison tool lists newer models alongside legacy products: Apple Watch comparison.

What actually separates the three watches?
SE 2: the inexpensive essentials model
The SE 2 covers notifications, calls when paired or connected, Apple Pay, activity rings, workouts, heart-rate alerts, Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS. Its S8 chip, 32GB storage and non-always-on screen are the compromises. It is a sensible first watch, child’s watch or lightweight daily tracker when the discount is large.

- WHY APPLE WATCH ULTRA 2 — Rugged, capable, and built to meet the demands of endurance athletes, outdoor adventurers, and water sport enthusiasts — with a specialized band for each. The S9 SiP enables a superbright display and a magical new way to quickly and easily interact with your Apple Watch without touching the display. Up to 36 hours of battery life and 72 hours in Low Power Mode.
- CARBON NEUTRAL — Apple Watch Ultra 2 paired with the latest Alpine Loop or Trail Loop is carbon neutral. Learn more about Apple’s commitment to the environment at apple.com/2030.
- EXTREMELY RUGGED, INCREDIBLY CAPABLE — 49mm corrosion-resistant titanium case. Large Digital Crown and Customizable Action button for instant control over a variety of functions. 100m water resistance.
- BIGGEST, BRIGHTEST DISPLAY YET — Apple’s brightest Always-On Retina display is easy to see, even in direct sunlight. More room for adding complications to customize your watch face and enough space to view six metrics at once.
- THE FREEDOM OF CELLULAR — Cellular is built in. You can call and text without your iPhone, even overseas with international roaming. Stream your favorite music and podcasts. Get directions with Maps.
Series 9: the best everyday compromise
Series 9 adds the newer S9 system, double the storage, an always-on display, ECG and temperature sensing, a brighter screen and an IP6X dust rating. It remains compact enough for sleep, work and exercise without the Ultra’s height and weight.
Ultra 2: hardware for endurance and outdoors
Ultra 2 uses the same S9 generation as Series 9, so its premium is not proportionally faster everyday apps. You are paying for a much larger battery, titanium case, sapphire crystal, 3,000-nit display, cellular hardware, Action button, dual-frequency GPS and diving functions.
Display and daily comfort
The SE 2’s screen turns off when your wrist is down. You must raise your wrist or tap to see the time or workout metric. Indoors it is clear, but the interruption is noticeable. Series 9’s always-on display is the easiest choice for ordinary use. Ultra 2 is the most readable in strong sunlight, although its 49mm case can feel tall, heavy or intrusive on a small wrist.
Apple lists the 40mm GPS SE 2 at 26.4 grams and the 44mm GPS version at 32.9 grams before the band. Ultra 2 weighs roughly 61–62 grams before its band. Band material adds to those figures. Series 9 is the middle ground for screen area and comfort.

Health, safety and fitness
All three monitor heart rate, record workouts and support notifications for unusually high or low heart rate and irregular rhythm. They also provide Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS. These features are not medical diagnoses or replacements for clinical care.
- ECG: available on Series 9 and Ultra 2, not SE 2; country approval and software requirements apply.
- Temperature sensing: Series 9 and Ultra 2 only. It can support cycle-related estimates and other software features, but it is not a clinical thermometer.
- Blood Oxygen: region- and unit-dependent. Check Apple’s listing for the exact watch rather than assuming every Series 9 or Ultra 2 has the feature.
- Fitness: SE 2 and Series 9 handle running, walking, cycling, gym workouts, hiking and recreational swimming. Ultra 2 adds a larger data screen, precision dual-frequency GPS, water-temperature sensing, a depth gauge and the Depth app to 40 meters.
The SE 2 and Series 9 are rated for 50-meter water resistance; Ultra 2 is rated for 100 meters. Water resistance is not waterproofing and can decline after impact or seal aging. Ultra 2 is not automatically suitable for every technical or scuba-diving situation.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates SE 2 and Series 9 for up to 18 hours and Ultra 2 for up to 36 hours, with up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode under specified conditions. See Apple’s battery information at Apple Support. GPS workouts, cellular use, streaming, sleep tracking, cold temperatures and battery aging reduce actual runtime.
For a used watch, battery health matters more than the original rating. A worn Ultra 2 may still last longer than a new SE 2, but ask for the Battery Health reading, confirm the return window and budget for the possibility of service. Ultra 2 is the most convenient for sleep tracking and multi-day trips because it is less likely to need a daily charge.

Durability and materials
SE 2 uses an aluminum case and Ion-X glass. Series 9 is available in aluminum or stainless steel; stainless models use sapphire crystal. Ultra 2 combines titanium with a flat sapphire crystal and is tested to MIL-STD 810H conditions. That testing is not a guarantee against damage, and sapphire is scratch-resistant rather than scratch-proof.
For office work, commuting, gym sessions and normal running, Ultra 2’s rugged construction is usually unnecessary. Its advantages matter when high visibility, impact resistance, long battery life or outdoor navigation justify the extra size.
Cellular, iPhone compatibility and software runway
GPS and GPS + Cellular are different products. Cellular service requires a compatible carrier plan and recurring fees; international roaming and emergency calling depend on the market and carrier. A cellular watch can perform some tasks away from an iPhone but is not a complete iPhone replacement. Used cellular units also require checks for carrier, regional-band and Activation Lock issues.
Apple’s compatibility table lists the original baseline for SE 2, Series 9 and Ultra 2 as iPhone XS or later with iOS 17 or later. Newer watches have moved to stricter requirements, including iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26. Check the live table at Apple’s compatibility page before buying. Apple does not promise a fixed number of future watchOS updates; Series 9 and Ultra 2 have the newer S9 platform and are the safer choices when their prices are close.

Which one should you buy?
Buy the SE 2 when
- It is clearly cheaper than a comparable Series 9.
- You mainly need notifications, timers, Apple Pay, workouts and safety features.
- You prefer a light watch or are buying for a child or first-time user.
- You do not need an always-on display, ECG or temperature sensing.
Buy the Series 9 when
- You want the strongest mix of comfort, health features, screen quality and price.
- You use the watch for work, commuting, ordinary fitness and sleep tracking.
- A certified-refurbished or lightly used unit has a meaningful discount.
Buy the Ultra 2 when
- Battery life, outdoor readability, durability or cellular independence is central.
- You hike, camp, run long distances, cycle, swim outdoors or dive recreationally.
- You can comfortably wear a 49mm case and the price is substantially below Ultra 3.
Skip all three when
A current SE 3, Series 11 or Ultra 3 is only slightly more expensive. Newer hardware brings a longer likely support runway, a fresh battery and current warranty options. Compare current models at Apple’s comparison page rather than assuming an older discount is good value.
Used and refurbished buying checklist
- Remove Activation Lock: the seller must erase the watch and remove it from their Apple Account before payment.
- Check Battery Health: request a screenshot or inspect it during the return period.
- Confirm configuration: verify case size, GPS versus GPS + Cellular, regional model and intended carrier.
- Inspect hardware: check display edges, rear crystal, Digital Crown, side button, speaker, microphone and charging.
- Do not trust old water seals: avoid swimming with a damaged or poorly documented used watch.
- Verify accessories: confirm a compatible charging puck and acceptable band condition.
- Use return protection: compare warranty, battery standards, parts policy and return period.
Apple Certified Refurbished watches are tested and include a one-year limited warranty and 14-day return policy under Apple’s terms. Inventory changes frequently at Apple Certified Refurbished.
Price-based decision rules
| Market situation | Best move |
|---|---|
| SE 2 is far cheaper than Series 9 | Choose SE 2 for basic use, provided battery and warranty are acceptable. |
| Series 9 costs only modestly more than SE 2 | Choose Series 9 for its always-on display, S9 chip, ECG, temperature sensing and 64GB storage. |
| Ultra 2 is close to a newer standard Apple Watch | Buy Ultra 2 only if battery, ruggedness, GPS or diving features matter. |
| Ultra 2 approaches Ultra 3 pricing | Prefer Ultra 3 unless the Ultra 2 discount is substantial. |
Observed Apple U.S. refurbished snapshots included SE 2 prices of $169 for 40mm and $189 for 44mm, and Ultra 2 listings from $589 to $679. These were time-specific prices, not permanent retail prices. Series 9 pricing and stock vary; verify the live listing, battery condition, connectivity and warranty.
