The Apple Watch Series 9 has the more advanced display, chip, storage, and health sensors; the Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) covers core smartwatch and fitness needs with fewer features. In 2026, consider either only after checking its actual price, condition, battery health, and compatibility with your iPhone and intended watchOS.
This guide compares the 2022 SE 2 with the 2023 Series 9. They are older models, so the better value depends on the specific listing rather than their original prices.

What Series 9 adds
Always-on, brighter display
Series 9 has an always-on display rated by Apple at up to 2,000 nits, compared with the SE 2 display’s maximum of 1,000 nits. It also supports a 1-nit minimum brightness. The display can make the time and other information easier to glance at without waking the screen.

More health sensors
Series 9 adds an electrical heart sensor for ECG and a temperature sensor. Apple lists ECG and cycle tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates among its features. The SE 2 has an optical heart sensor and supports heart-rate and irregular-rhythm notifications, but it does not have the listed electrical heart or temperature sensors.

Newer chip, more storage, and Double Tap
Series 9 has an S9 chip and 64 GB of storage; SE 2 has an S8 and 32 GB. Apple also lists Double Tap and Siri with on-device processing for Series 9. These differences may matter if you want more local storage or those specific interactions; they do not establish that every ordinary task is faster.
Case choices and glass
SE 2 is aluminum in 40 mm or 44 mm sizes. Series 9 comes in 41 mm or 45 mm and offers aluminum or stainless steel. The stainless-steel Series 9 uses sapphire crystal; aluminum Series 9 and SE 2 use Ion-X glass. Verify the exact case and material in a listing rather than assuming every Series 9 has sapphire.

What the two watches share
Both models support core Apple Watch functions, including workouts and heart-rate features. The SE 2 is not without health or safety capabilities: Apple lists irregular-rhythm and high- and low-heart-rate notifications for it. Both include a band and magnetic charging cable, so those are not necessary additional purchases when buying a complete unit.
Apple rates both for up to 18 hours of normal use. Series 9 additionally has an Apple estimate of up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode and charges faster. These estimates are not a guarantee of real-world runtime, especially for a used watch with an aged battery.

Choose Series 9 if its display, sensors, case options, storage, or charging speed are features you will use and the listing is in good condition at a price you consider worthwhile. Consider SE 2 if its core functions meet your needs and it is priced accordingly. Current used prices and inventory were not verified for this guide, so neither model can be called the better bargain in every market.

Apple’s compatibility table lists SE 2 with iPhone 8 or later, iOS 16 or later, and watchOS 9 or later; it lists Series 9 with iPhone XS or later, iOS 17 or later, and watchOS 10 or later. These listed minimums do not guarantee that a watch can install every newer watchOS version. Apple’s update footnote says watchOS 11 requires iPhone XS or later with iOS 18 or later. Check compatibility for the software you intend to use before purchase.

Buying a used or refurbished model
- Confirm the exact model and configuration. Check case size, material, and whether it is GPS or GPS + Cellular.
- Check battery health and condition. Review battery health on the watch and inspect the screen, case, buttons, and charging behavior.
- Confirm setup is possible. The seller should remove the watch from their account so you can pair it without the previous owner’s credentials.
- Compare the full deal. Consider the price, return terms, included band and charging cable, and compatibility with your iPhone.
FAQ
Is Apple Watch Series 9 better than SE 2?
Series 9 has more advanced specifications, including an always-on display, ECG and temperature sensors, more storage, a newer chip, Double Tap, and faster charging. SE 2 may suit someone who wants core Apple Watch functions without those additions.
Does Apple Watch SE 2 have ECG?
No. Apple’s SE 2 specifications list no electrical heart sensor. Series 9 has one and supports ECG, subject to Apple’s feature requirements and availability.
Does Series 9 have an always-on display?
Yes. Apple lists an Always-On Retina LTPO OLED display for Series 9. The SE 2 display is not listed as always-on.
Which watch works with my iPhone?
Apple’s compatibility table lists different minimum iPhone and software requirements for the two models. Newer watchOS updates can require a newer iPhone than the model’s original minimum, so check Apple’s current compatibility and update information for your intended setup.
