Verdict: The Apple Watch Series 10 is a polished but incremental update. Its thinner 9.7 mm case, larger display, faster charging, media-playing speaker, and new depth and water-temperature sensors are genuinely useful. But the battery rating remains up to 18 hours, performance is not dramatically different from Series 9, and it lacks the Ultra 2’s ruggedness, endurance, Action button, and advanced GPS.
That makes Series 10 most attractive to owners of older Apple Watches and buyers who find it substantially discounted in 2026. Series 9 owners should usually skip the upgrade unless the slimmer body, larger screen, or faster charging matters a great deal.

The 2024 review consensus, updated for 2026
The original review coverage, published around September 17, 2024, reached a consistent conclusion: Series 10 was an iterative Apple Watch update rather than a reinvention. Reviewers nevertheless found that Apple’s hardware changes were more noticeable in daily use than the familiar rounded design suggested.

The case became thinner, the displays became larger, charging became considerably faster, and the watch gained useful water-related hardware. Those changes made Series 10 feel like a more comfortable alternative to the Apple Watch Ultra 2 for ordinary smartwatch use. The “Ultra Lite” comparison works for screen area and wearability—but not for battery life, durability, GPS, diving, or outdoor capability.

In 2026, Series 10 is no longer Apple’s current numbered model. Its value therefore depends heavily on the actual price gap between a discounted or refurbished Series 10 and the current Apple Watch generation. Apple still lists Series 10 compatibility with iPhone XS or later, iOS 18 or later, and watchOS 11 or later; check Apple’s current compatibility page for the latest software details before buying.
9to5Mac’s launch review roundup, TechRadar’s review, DC Rainmaker’s technical testing, Macworld’s roundup, and MacRumors’ review broadly support that assessment.
What changed from Apple Watch Series 9?
A thinner case with larger sizes
Series 10 moves from the Series 9’s 41 mm and 45 mm sizes to 42 mm and 46 mm. More importantly, the case is 9.7 mm thick—approximately 10% thinner than Series 9. That reduction is modest on paper but meaningful on the wrist, particularly when sleeping or wearing the watch under a shirt cuff.

The aluminum versions came in Jet Black, Rose Gold, and Silver. The premium option changed from stainless steel to titanium, available in Slate, Gold, and Natural. Aluminum remains the lighter choice; titanium adds a sapphire crystal and a more premium case material but costs more and weighs more than the lightest aluminum models.
Series 10 still has the conventional rounded Apple Watch shape. It does not adopt the Ultra’s raised-edge enclosure, flat-sided construction, or large orange Action button.
Apple’s launch announcement and official specifications provide the complete material and dimension details.
The display is the biggest everyday improvement
The 42 mm model has a 989-square-millimeter display with a 374 × 446-pixel resolution. The 46 mm model has 1,220 square millimeters and 416 × 496 pixels. Both use an LTPO3 OLED Always-On Retina display with wide-angle OLED technology and up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness.
Apple claimed up to 40% greater brightness when the display is viewed at an angle. That is Apple’s off-angle claim, not a universal measurement showing that the screen is 40% brighter in every situation.

The larger display is easy to appreciate: complications fit more comfortably, text is easier to read, workout data is less cramped, and on-screen typing is more usable. Several reviewers considered the screen large enough to compete favorably with the Ultra 2 for ordinary smartwatch tasks. That comparison refers to display area, however—not total watch size, brightness, toughness, battery life, or outdoor usefulness.
The S10 chip is newer, but not a transformational upgrade
Series 10 uses Apple’s S10 SiP with a 64-bit dual-core processor, a four-core Neural Engine, and 64 GB of storage. The S10 designation is new, but the review consensus did not identify a dramatic, user-visible performance leap over Series 9. Apps and watchOS feel responsive, yet speed alone is not a persuasive reason for a Series 9 owner to upgrade.
Fast charging makes the unchanged battery easier to live with
Apple rates Series 10 for up to 18 hours of normal use, or up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode. Those figures are defined test results, not guarantees: GPS workouts, cellular use, music streaming, high brightness, weak signal, and sleep tracking can reduce actual endurance.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The important improvement is charging. Series 10 can reach up to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. Apple says 15 minutes can provide up to eight hours of normal use, while eight minutes can provide up to eight hours of sleep tracking. For people who wear their watch overnight, that can turn a short shower, breakfast, or pre-bed charging session into enough power for another sleep-tracking night.
It does not solve the fundamental limitation: most users still need to charge daily. The Ultra 2 remains substantially better for multi-day use.
New speaker and water sensors
The built-in speaker can play media rather than handling only alerts and calls. Voice isolation also improves call handling. This is convenient for brief listening or calls, but it is not a replacement for headphones for most music or podcast use.
Series 10 adds a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor, along with Depth and Tides apps. The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters, and its depth gauge is intended for depths up to 6 meters/20 feet, such as snorkeling-related activities. It is not a substitute for the Ultra’s deeper-water and diving capabilities.

Sleep-apnea notifications arrived with watchOS 11 and are not exclusive to Series 10. Apple also supports the feature on Series 9 and Ultra 2. That makes it a software benefit available across multiple compatible watches, not a unique reason to move from Series 9 to Series 10.
What reviewers agreed on
Thinness mattered more than the processor
General technology reviewers repeatedly emphasized comfort. The thinner case is easier to wear all day and during sleep, and it makes the conventional Apple Watch feel less intrusive without changing the familiar interface or band system.
The display changed the experience more than the silhouette
The watch still looks unmistakably like an Apple Watch, but the expanded screen creates a more noticeable functional difference. More information fits on screen, and small interface elements are easier to operate. This was the feature most likely to make Series 10 feel new to an existing owner.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBattery remained the main weakness
Fitness-focused reviewers were more skeptical than general technology reviewers because the 18-hour headline rating limits long workouts, overnight tracking, and travel flexibility. Faster charging reduces the inconvenience but does not provide the freedom of an Ultra.
The upgrade case depends on the starting point
Owners of Series 4 through Series 8 have a stronger reason to upgrade. They gain a larger display, newer processor, faster charging, newer health and software capabilities, and a thinner design. Series 9 owners already have much of the same core experience, so the decision rests mainly on comfort, screen size, and charging.
The split in reviews is therefore logical rather than contradictory. Everyday-watch reviewers saw a surprisingly practical design improvement; fitness specialists placed more weight on battery, GPS, training features, and workout behavior.

Series 10 can have more listed display area than Ultra 2 while remaining much smaller on the wrist. That is why “Ultra Lite” is a useful shorthand for some buyers. It means a large, readable screen in a thinner everyday case.

It does not mean Ultra-equivalent hardware. Ultra 2 is the better choice for long hikes, trail running, diving, harsh environments, multi-day battery life, advanced GPS, and anyone who relies on the Action button. Series 10 is the better choice for users who want the least bulky watch that still offers a large screen and broad Apple Watch functionality.

Should Series 9 owners upgrade?
Usually, no. Series 9 owners already have ECG, a modern Apple Watch processor, the core health and fitness experience, and compatibility with watchOS 11 features such as sleep-apnea notifications. Series 10 does not offer a compelling performance revolution or a longer official battery rating.
The upgrade becomes reasonable when one of three changes matters strongly:
- You want the thinner case. Sleepers and people bothered by watch bulk may notice this every day.
- You want the larger display. The extra screen area improves reading, complications, workouts, and text entry.
- You need faster charging. This is particularly valuable if you track sleep and currently struggle to find charging time.
If none of those applies, keep the Series 9 or wait. If Series 10 is only slightly cheaper than a newer current model, compare software-support horizon, battery improvements, and newer health features before choosing the older watch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy Series 10 in 2026?
Buy it if you are coming from Series 4 through Series 8
This is the clearest upgrade path. The larger screen, thinner body, better charging, newer sensors, and current software support add up to a substantial general improvement. The case is especially strong for buyers whose old battery has degraded or whose watch no longer receives the software features they want.
Buy it as a discounted or refurbished model
Series 10 makes sense when its actual price is meaningfully below the current Apple Watch generation. Apple has listed Certified Refurbished Series 10 configurations, although inventory, configuration, region, and price change over time. Check the official refurbished listing rather than assuming every configuration is available.
A refurbished unit can be attractive because the S10 platform, large display, fast charging, and watchOS features remain relevant. But a small price gap can erase the value advantage; in that case, the newer model may offer a longer support runway or newer hardware.
Choose it for comfort and screen size
Series 10 is a good match for iPhone users who want a large, readable display without the Ultra’s weight and bulk. It suits walking, running, cycling, swimming, gym sessions, notifications, sleep tracking, and everyday health monitoring.

Choose something else for endurance or adventure
Pick Ultra 2 or its successor if battery life, dual-frequency GPS, ruggedness, diving, navigation, or the Action button matters. Pick an Apple Watch SE if the priority is a lower entry price and you can live without an Always-On display, ECG, premium materials, and some advanced health features. See Apple’s current Apple Watch range, Ultra range, and SE range before making a 2026 purchase.
Important limitations before buying
Compatibility
Series 10 requires an iPhone XS or later, including iPhone SE (second generation) or later, with iOS 18 or later. It is not an Android-compatible smartwatch. Apple lists Series 10 as compatible with watchOS 11 or later, but exact current software support can change, so verify the latest Apple compatibility documentation.
Blood Oxygen varies by region and unit
Do not assume every Series 10 sold worldwide has active Blood Oxygen functionality. Availability depends on the sales region, sales date, and software status. U.S. models affected by Apple’s patent-related restrictions require particular caution: identify where the watch was sold and whether Blood Oxygen is enabled before treating the feature as part of the purchase decision.
Titanium is not automatically superior
Titanium models offer a premium case and sapphire crystal, which can be valuable for scratch resistance. Aluminum models are lighter and usually the better choice for buyers who prioritize comfort and price. Neither material makes Series 10 equivalent to the Ultra’s rugged enclosure.
Cellular adds ongoing cost
Cellular is useful when you want to leave the iPhone behind for workouts, errands, or emergencies. It can also involve a carrier plan. If your iPhone is nearly always nearby, GPS may provide better value.
Health features are not diagnoses
ECG, irregular-rhythm alerts, sleep-apnea notifications, temperature readings, and cycle tracking have eligibility, regional, age, and medical-use limitations. They are wellness and screening tools, not substitutes for professional medical advice. Consult Apple’s specifications and feature documentation for the limits that apply in your region.
