Apple Watch Series 10 combines hardware features such as shallow-water depth sensing with software tools that are easy to overlook, including Double Tap, Vitals, and sleep tracking. The key is knowing what each feature does, how to use it, and where eligibility or safety limits apply.
This guide focuses on features and requirements confirmed in Apple’s support documentation. Availability can vary by model, region, and user eligibility; health features provide information, not a diagnosis.
Quick comparison: what these features do
| Feature | What it does | How to use it | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double Tap | Performs a context-sensitive action, such as answering a call or navigating supported screens. | Tap your index finger and thumb together twice; customize playback and Smart Stack actions in settings. | Unavailable in some states and on unsupported screens or apps. |
| Vitals | Shows overnight measurements and compares them with your typical ranges. | Wear the watch to sleep, then review the Vitals app. | It is not a diagnosis; Blood Oxygen availability varies. |
| Sleep tracking | Estimates sleep stages and shows recent sleep trends. | Set up Sleep and wear the watch to bed. | Estimates depend on wearing the watch overnight. |
| Depth | Records underwater activity and displays depth-related information. | Open the Depth app or configure its auto-launch behavior. | Series 10 is specified for a maximum depth of 6 meters (20 feet); it is not a dive computer. |
Use Double Tap for common actions
Double Tap is a gesture, not a universal click. Tap your index finger and thumb together twice to perform the primary action offered on a supported screen. Depending on the screen or app, it can answer a call, reply to a message, or navigate the Smart Stack and supported app screens.
You can customize playback to use Play/Pause or Skip, and Smart Stack behavior to use Advance or Select. If the gesture indicator shakes, Apple says the gesture is unavailable on that screen or in that third-party app. See Apple’s Double Tap guide.

Wake and unlock the watch and check these settings if the gesture does not work.
Check overnight measurements with Vitals
Vitals brings together overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen where available, and sleep duration. It compares measurements with typical ranges based on your sleep data. By default, Apple says a notification can appear when at least two metrics fall outside their typical ranges, with possible context such as illness, elevation change, or medication changes.
Wear the watch overnight with the back in contact with your skin; Apple advises a fit that is neither too tight nor too loose. Vitals can help you notice patterns, but it does not diagnose illness. Read Apple’s Vitals guide.

Blood Oxygen availability in the United States
For Apple Watch models purchased in the United States on or after January 18, 2024, with part numbers ending in LW/A, Blood Oxygen is not available in the Vitals app. Availability also varies by model and area. Blood Oxygen is a general-wellness feature, not a medical diagnostic tool. Check Apple’s current Vitals information.
Track sleep stages and trends
Apple Watch can estimate time spent in REM, Core, and Deep sleep, as well as possible periods of wakefulness. The Sleep app can show recent trends over the past 14 days, according to Apple Support.
- Set up Sleep from the Sleep app on Apple Watch or in the Health app on iPhone.
- Set a sleep schedule, including a sleep goal and wind-down period if useful.
- Wear the watch to bed so it can collect sleep data.
- Review sleep stages and recent trends in the Sleep app.
Sleep stages are estimates, not a clinical sleep assessment. Consistent overnight wear gives the watch data to review. Read Apple’s sleep-tracking guide.

Use Depth for shallow-water activity
The Series 10 Depth app records underwater activity to a maximum depth of 6 meters (20 feet), as specified by Apple Support. It is designed for shallow-water use, not scuba diving.
Apple Support warns that Depth is not a dive computer and does not provide decompression-stop information, gas analysis, or other recreational scuba-diving functionality. Apple also cautions against scuba diving, waterskiing, high-velocity water, and submersion below shallow depth. Do not treat the watch as a replacement for dedicated dive equipment. Read Apple’s Depth app guidance.
