Apple Watch Series 10’s Five Original Display-Optimized Faces—and What Changed in watchOS 26

The original five Apple Watch faces that used Series 10’s faster Always On display were Flux, Reflections, Activity Digital, Unity Rhythm, and Pride Harmony. That was the correct list in May 2025. It is no longer the complete current picture: Apple says watchOS 26 expanded 1Hz Always On support to more than 20 faces, while also adding the behavior to examples including Exactograph, Stopwatch, and Timer.

What Series 10 changed

The important upgrade is not simply the larger screen. Apple Watch Series 10 introduced a wide-angle OLED display with a faster refresh capability in dimmed Always On mode. Earlier Always On displays could keep the time visible while the wrist was down, but many elements updated only approximately once per minute. Series 10 can update selected elements approximately once per second, allowing a visible seconds hand or seconds field to keep ticking without raising the wrist.

This does not mean the whole display runs at full brightness or full frame rate. The face remains dimmed, and the faster behavior applies only to faces and elements designed to support it. Apple describes the underlying display improvement in its Series 10 announcement.

Activity Digital Digital The seconds field can continue counting Existing face updated for the feature
Unity Rhythm Analog An analog seconds hand can update once per second Added in January 2025
Pride Harmony Analog An analog seconds hand can update while dimmed Added with watchOS 11.5

The original count and the additions of Unity Rhythm and Pride Harmony were reported on May 6, 2025 by 9to5Mac. Flux and Reflections were introduced alongside the Series 10/watchOS 11 generation, while Activity Digital was updated to use the capability.

Flux

Flux is a watchOS 11 face built around a full-screen vertical color animation. It was one of the faces Apple used to showcase the Series 10 display, with the visual treatment changing from second to second.

Reflections

Reflections is an analog face with a reflective, shimmering dial and a seconds hand. It offers a full-screen layout as well as a circular layout with complication slots. In dimmed Always On mode on compatible hardware, the seconds hand can continue to update.

Activity Digital

Activity Digital already displayed seconds, but earlier versions could stop showing or updating that field when the face entered dimmed Always On mode. On Series 10, the seconds display can continue counting once per second.

Unity Rhythm and Pride Harmony

Unity Rhythm, added in January 2025, and Pride Harmony, added with watchOS 11.5, extended the original list with analog faces whose seconds hands can use the faster wrist-down refresh behavior.

What “full advantage” actually means

In this context, “full advantage” means that a supported face can show a seconds indicator changing approximately once per second while the display is dimmed in Always On mode.

  • It does not mean every complication updates every second.
  • It does not mean the display stays as bright as it is when the wrist is raised.
  • It does not mean every animation continues at full speed.
  • It does not mean every Apple Watch face gains Series 10-specific behavior.

A seconds hand that ticks once per second is also different from a continuously sweeping hand. A face such as Reflections may sweep while fully active but show discrete once-per-second movement when dimmed. Apple says many complications still update only once per minute or as needed while the wrist is down; time-sensitive features such as Stopwatch and Timer have separate behavior. watchOS 26 made the five-face list historical

Apple’s current watchOS 26 documentation says 1Hz Always On support now extends to more than 20 watch faces. Apple names Exactograph, Activity Digital, and Reflections among the supported faces, and also identifies the Stopwatch and Timer apps as capable of showing seconds ticking in Always On mode.

Apple does not provide a precise total in the cited documentation, so it is safer to say “more than 20” rather than claim an exact number. The practical takeaway is straightforward:

  • May 2025: five faces were identified as using the capability.
  • watchOS 26: support expanded substantially beyond those five.

Do not interpret the update as a promise that every face, complication, or third-party app now refreshes at 1Hz. Face support is individually implemented, and apps remain subject to Always On power-management rules. Apple’s developer documentation explains the distinction between active and Always On app behavior in its guide to designing apps for the Always On state.

Compatible models and requirements

The faster face behavior is associated with Apple Watch Series 10 and later models that support the relevant Always On capability. An older Apple Watch with an Always On display should not automatically be assumed to support the same 1Hz face behavior.

Apple’s documentation also states that Always On is unavailable on Apple Watch SE (2nd generation). watchOS 26 features can vary by country or region, so availability should be checked for the user’s location.

You need all of the following:

  • A compatible Series 10-or-later Apple Watch.
  • A supported watchOS release, including watchOS 26 for the expanded face support.
  • Always On enabled.
  • A supported face with a visible seconds hand or seconds field.
  • A mode that does not disable Always On.

How to turn it on

  1. On the watch, open Settings.
  2. Tap Display & Brightness.
  3. Tap Always On.
  4. Turn on Always On.
  5. On the iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and tap My Watch.
  6. Use the face controls or Face Gallery to add a compatible face, then set it as the current face.

Apple documents face management and the Face Gallery in its Apple Watch user guide. With the correct face selected, the display should remain visible but dim when the wrist is down, while its supported seconds element updates approximately once per second.

If the seconds are not moving

  • Check Always On: Go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Always On and confirm it is enabled.
  • Exit Low Power Mode: Apple says Low Power Mode turns off Always On. See Apple’s battery-life guide.
  • Check the face: A face can remain visible in dimmed mode without supporting a continuously updating seconds field.
  • Update watchOS: The face may require a newer release, particularly for watchOS 26’s expanded support.
  • Check for a seconds element: Some faces may support the system behavior but offer no visible seconds hand or seconds field in the selected configuration.
  • Do not test a random complication: Complications generally do not refresh every second in dimmed Always On mode.
  • Leave Theater Mode: Apple says Always On is unavailable in Theater Mode.

Is this feature worth upgrading for?

It matters most if you regularly need to read seconds without raising your wrist, use the watch for pacing or timing, or specifically want a ticking analog seconds hand. It also gives Series 10-or-later owners a visible day-to-day benefit from the display hardware.

The upgrade is less compelling if you normally raise your wrist, use faces without seconds, disable Always On to preserve battery life, or care more about health features, battery life, case design, or complications. Apple describes Series 10’s display as more power efficient, but neither Always On nor higher-frequency updates should be treated as having no power trade-off.

If the seconds display is the deciding factor, choose Series 10 or later and verify the face and watchOS requirements. A refurbished older model may be better value for general Apple Watch use, but it is a poor choice if this specific display behavior is essential. An Ultra model may better suit rugged or outdoor use, but do not assume it offers every Series 10-specific face or identical behavior without checking the exact model and software combination.
