If Series 10 already lasts long enough and you carry an iPhone, keeping it is the better value.
Apple announced Series 11 on September 9, 2025, with availability beginning September 19, 2025. The two generations look and function similarly, so the upgrade decision depends on a short list of practical improvements—not on a dramatic redesign.
Key takeaways
- Apple rates Series 11 for up to 24 hours of normal use, compared with up to 18 hours for Series 10.
- Series 11 adds hypertension notifications, RedCap 5G on cellular models, and an Apple-claimed 2x improvement in Ion-X glass scratch resistance.
- Sleep score is not exclusive to Series 11 because Apple makes it available on Series 10 with watchOS 26 and a compatible iPhone.
- Both generations use the S10 chip family, offer 42mm and 46mm case sizes, and list 64GB of capacity.
- Series 11 requires an iPhone 11 or later, while Series 10 supports iPhone XS or later.
- Series 11 is worth upgrading to straight away only when its battery, health, cellular, or durability improvements solve a specific problem.
What is the difference between Apple Watch Series 10 and Series 11?
Apple Watch Series 11 is a targeted refinement rather than a major redesign. The meaningful differences are longer rated battery life, hypertension notifications, RedCap 5G on cellular models, and more scratch-resistant Ion-X glass on aluminum versions. Series 10 remains broadly similar in size, processor family, storage, health tracking, and software support.

Is the Apple Watch Series 11 battery better?
Yes. Battery life is the clearest everyday improvement in the Apple Watch Series 11 versus Series 10 comparison. According to Apple (2025), Series 11 delivers up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. | Apple’s rated endurance | Series 11 | Series 10 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal use | Up to 24 hours | Up to 18 hours | 6 hours more for Series 11 |
| Low Power Mode | Up to 38 hours | Up to 36 hours | 2 hours more for Series 11 |
These are Apple’s rated figures, not guaranteed runtimes. Actual endurance depends on factors including usage, GPS, cellular connectivity, signal strength, settings, and configuration. Apple used different test conditions for the two generations, so the six-hour difference should not be treated as an independent laboratory measurement.
The practical benefit is easier sleep tracking. A Series 11 owner is more likely to finish a day, wear the watch overnight, and still have charging flexibility the next morning. That conclusion follows from Apple’s longer rating; it is not a claim based on independent battery testing.
Does Series 11 have health features that Series 10 does not?
Series 11’s headline health addition is hypertension notifications. Apple lists the feature in the Series 11 technical specifications, but hypertension notifications should not be described as blood-pressure measurement or a medical diagnosis.

Series 10 already supports ECG, high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, cycle tracking, temperature sensing, sleep stages, and sleep-apnea notifications under Apple’s stated conditions. Series 11 therefore adds a focused health capability rather than replacing a watch with an otherwise basic health feature set.
Is sleep score exclusive to Apple Watch Series 11?
No. Sleep score is not, by itself, a reason for a Series 10 owner to upgrade. Apple states: “Sleep score is available with watchOS 26 for Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) or later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models, paired with iPhone 11 or later, running iOS 26.” The statement appears in Apple’s Series 11 launch announcement.

Series 10 is included in that compatibility range. If sleep score is the feature that interests you, update a compatible Series 10 and iPhone rather than replacing the watch solely for that feature. Feature availability can still vary by region and software version.
Is Series 11 more durable than Series 10?
For aluminum models, Apple says Series 11’s Ion-X glass has 2x more scratch resistance than the Ion-X glass used on Series 10. Apple describes Series 11 as having a display that is “2x more scratch-resistant” in its September 9, 2025 launch announcement.
This is Apple’s manufacturer comparison, not evidence that Series 11 glass is scratch-proof. The claim applies to the Ion-X aluminum configuration. Titanium models use sapphire crystal on both relevant specification listings, so buyers should not apply the Ion-X comparison to every case material.
Durability is a sensible upgrade reason for an owner whose aluminum Series 10 screen is already scratched or who works in an environment where display scratches are a recurring problem. It is a weaker reason to replace an unmarked Series 10.
Does Apple Watch Series 11 have 5G?
Yes, selected Apple Watch Series 11 cellular models support RedCap for 5G as well as LTE. Apple says 5G is available only in select markets and through select carriers, and a wireless service plan is required. The Series 11 technical specifications provide the relevant regional and carrier qualification.
RedCap 5G matters most to people who regularly leave an iPhone behind while running, commuting, exercising, or handling errands. Cellular Series 11 can support calls, messages, notifications, and streaming away from the iPhone when an active plan is compatible. A GPS-only Series 11 does not gain that independent cellular connection.

If you always carry your iPhone, or if you would not pay for a separate watch line, Series 11’s 5G support is unlikely to justify an upgrade. Carrier coverage, plan pricing, market availability, and account eligibility must be checked separately.
Is Series 11 faster than Series 10?
Apple’s published specifications do not establish a major speed upgrade. Series 11 lists an S10 chip with a 64-bit dual-core processor and 64GB of capacity, while Series 10 lists the S10 SiP, a 64-bit dual-core processor, and 64GB of capacity. The matching published chip family and storage capacity make battery, health, connectivity, and durability—not processing speed—the stronger upgrade arguments.
That does not prove that every operation will feel identical; software, thermal behavior, and small configuration details can affect responsiveness. It does mean there is no responsible basis in the supplied specifications for promising a dramatic Series 11 performance leap. Compare the Series 10 technical specifications with Apple’s Series 11 specifications before treating speed as a buying reason.
What stays the same between Series 10 and Series 11?
Series 10 and Series 11 retain the same 42mm and 46mm case-size choices, and both list a 9.7mm case depth. Display areas and resolutions are also listed consistently by case size. The physical continuity means Series 10 owners should expect a familiar watch rather than a visibly transformative redesign.
Both generations support core Apple Watch functions such as ECG, heart-rate notifications, sleep tracking, swimming use, and dust resistance under Apple’s stated ratings. Exact features and regulatory availability can vary by region and software version. Owners should not upgrade expecting a new size, radically different form factor, or an obvious processor-generation change.
What iPhone do you need for Series 11?
Apple Watch Series 11 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later, while Apple Watch Series 10 supports iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later, according to Apple’s Apple Watch and iPhone compatibility documentation.

That requirement can create a hidden upgrade cost. Someone with an iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or another phone that works with Series 10 may need to replace the iPhone before buying Series 11. Series 10 is not immediately excluded from the current software-support information supplied for this comparison, so an older compatible phone is a strong reason to keep Series 10 and calculate the total cost carefully.

How much does Apple Watch Series 11 cost?
Apple’s U.S. store listing shows Apple Watch Series 11 from $399 for the starting configuration shown on the page. The price is a time-stamped U.S. reference, not a universal or permanent price: case material, 42mm or 46mm size, band, GPS or cellular connectivity, promotions, taxes, and regional pricing all change the final amount. Check the Apple U.S. Series 11 store listing before publishing or buying.
For an existing Series 10 owner, the relevant cost is not simply the starting price. Include any required iPhone upgrade, the premium for cellular hardware, an ongoing cellular plan, and the value of the Series 10 if it is sold or passed on. If the only desired improvement is sleep score, keeping Series 10 avoids that expense because sleep score also reaches Series 10 through watchOS 26.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should upgrade from Series 10 to Series 11 now?
Upgrade straight away if one of the following describes your actual use:
- You struggle to cover a full day and night. The rated increase from 18 to 24 hours is the most tangible daily improvement, especially for sleep tracking.
- You specifically want hypertension notifications. Confirm eligibility, regional availability, and Apple’s medical limitations first; the feature is not a blood-pressure monitor.
- You want more independent cellular use. Series 11 cellular models add RedCap 5G, but only in supported markets and with a compatible carrier plan.
- Your aluminum Series 10 display scratches easily. Apple’s 2x scratch-resistance claim for Series 11 Ion-X glass may address a genuine durability problem.
- You are buying your first current Apple Watch. Series 11 is the current-generation choice in the supplied U.S. store context, with configurations starting at $399 before configuration changes and offers.
Who should keep Apple Watch Series 10?
Keep Series 10 if the watch already meets your needs. Waiting is sensible when you:

- Always carry an iPhone and have no need for cellular independence or 5G.
- Are mainly interested in sleep score, which Apple makes available on Series 10 with watchOS 26 under its stated iPhone requirements.
- Expect a substantial speed improvement, because both watches list the S10 chip family and 64GB capacity.
- Use an iPhone XS or another phone that does not meet Series 11’s iPhone 11-and-later requirement.
Should you buy Apple Watch Series 11 or keep Series 10?
Buy the Apple Watch Series 11 when longer battery life, hypertension notifications, cellular independence, or improved aluminum-glass scratch resistance has a clear value in your routine. Keep Series 10 when the watch works well and the appeal is mainly sleep score, software support, familiar sizing, or the hope of a faster processor.

Series 11 is better, but it is not an essential upgrade for every Series 10 owner. The honest answer to “Apple Watch Series 11 vs Apple Watch Series 10: is it worth upgrading straight away?” is only when a documented Series 11 improvement solves a specific problem. Otherwise, Series 10 owners can wait for a more substantial generation-to-generation change.
